The acquisition of standard planes is crucial for medical ultrasound (US) diagnosis. In this paper, we present a hierarchical supervised learning framework for automatically detecting standard plane in consecutive 2D US images. The technique is demonstrated by developing a system that localizes fetal abdominal standard plane (FASP) from US videos. We first propose a novel radial component-based model (RCM) to describe the geometric constrains of key anatomical structures (KAS). In order to enhance the detection accuracy, we further adopt random forests classifier for detection of KAS within the regions constrained by RCM. Finally, a second-level classifier combines the results of component detectors to identify a US image as a “FASP” or a “nonFASP”. Experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms both the full abdomen and the separate anatomy detection methods without geometric constrains.

We investigate cognitive factors that are predictive of learning gains when students learn to solve equations by teaching a synthetic peer, called SimStudent. Previous empirical studies showed that prior knowledge is strongly predictive of post-test scores. However, in a recent study in the Philippines that replicated our previous study in the USA, there were students with low priorknowledge who tutored their SimStudent better than other equally low prior students. In this paper, we analyze both process data (tutoring interactions) and outcome data (test scores) to understand what makes learning by teaching more effective. The results imply a presence of individual behavioral differences beyond the difference in the prior knowledge that might have affected SimStudent's learning, which in turn had non-trivial influence on tutor learning.

With the enormous growth of online reviews in Internet, sentiment analysis has received more and more attention in information retrieval and natural language processing community. Up to now there are very few researches conducted on sentiment analysis for Persian documents. This paper considers the problem of sentiment classification for online customer reviews in Persian language. One of the challenges of Persian language is using of a wide variety of declensional suffixes. Another common problem of Persian text is word spacing. In Persian in addition to white space as interwords space, an intra-word space called pseudo-space separates word's part. One more noticeable challenge in customer reviews in Persian language is that of utilizing many informal or colloquial words in text. In this paper we study these challenges by proposing a model for sentiment classification of Persian review documents. The proposed model is based on a lemmatization approach for Persian language and is employed Naive Bayes learning algorithm for classification. Additionally we present a new feature selection method based on the mutual information method to extract the best feature collection from the initial extracted features. Finally we evaluate the performance of the model on a manually gathered collection of cellphone reviews, where the results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.

In the previous research, the vibrotactile flow that can be generated by the excitation pattern utilizing structural resonance phenomena of a thin plate was smoother than the vibrotactile flow generated by the conventional apparent tactile movement and phantom sensation methods. This paper further investigates effects of three design parameters (signal-duration, time-interval between the two actuating signals, cutoff-time) in the excitation pattern on the smoothness of the vibrotactile flow. User study results show that the time-interval between the two actuating signals is the most important parameter while the signal-duration is the second. This fact can be effectively used when designing an excitation pattern that can generate smoother vibrotactile flow. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we proposed an in-vehicle haptic navigation system to overcome some limitations of current in-vehicle navigation aid systems. The haptic interface using vibrotactile signals with a 5-by-5 tactor array was installed on the back of the chair. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed system in various cognitive load conditions, we implemented a visual search experiment using a flicker paradigm. Sixteen participants were recruited to evaluate the proposed haptic navigation system. The two independent variables were validity (valid cue, invalid cue, and no cueing) and cognitive load levels (high and low) of search tasks. Despite of the cognitive load levels, the valid cue conditions elicited shorter response times than invalid cue and no cueing conditions. The result strongly supports the effectiveness of the proposed in-vehicle navigation systems. © 2012 Springer science+Business Media.

Mixed Reality (MR) simulation, in which a Virtual Reality (VR) system is used to simulate both the real and virtual components of an Augmented Reality (AR) system, has been proposed as a method for evaluating AR systems with greater levels of experimental control. However, factors such as the latency of the MR simulator may impact the validity of experimental results obtained with MR simulation. We present a study evaluating the effects of simulator latency on the equivalence of results from an MR simulator and a real AR system. We designed an AR experiment which required the participants to visually follow a virtual pipe around a small room filled with real targets and to find and identify the targets which were intersected by the pipe. We show that, with a 95% confidence interval, the results from all three simulated AR conditions fall well within one standard deviation of the real AR case.

We propose an image search system for flowers on a mobile phone. Mobile phones have more limited resources than desktop computers in terms of CPU, RAM and data storage. The database that we created has 45 classes. We used 182 training images and 246 test images. We used an HSV histogram as a color feature. The accuracy rate using only color features was 44.86% with radius C=20. We use SURF as a shape feature. The accuracy rate using only shape-based featurewas 47.31% with SURF vectors S=25. We combine both color and shape features to achieved accuracy 61.61%.
