Effi-CNN: real-time vision-based system for interpretation of sign language using CNN and transfer learning

The deaf and mute population has difficulty conveying their thoughts and ideas to others. Sign language is their most expressive mode of communication, but the general public is callow of sign language;therefore, the mute and deaf have difficulty communicating with others. A system that can correctly translate sign language motions to speech and vice versa in real time is required to overcome this communication barrier. Effi-CNN, a vision-based Sign Language Recognition (SLR) system employing transfer learning with EfficientNetB2, is proposed in this paper. We have also developed a system covering sign gestures to text in real time. Our approach was evaluated on eight publicly available datasets, including the Massey University gesture dataset, the ArSL2018 dataset, the MNIST-ASL dataset, and others. When comparing our results to state-of-the-art algorithms, the experimental findings showed that our proposed work is more successful than existing models. Our proposed model delivered an accuracy of 99.90 on MNIST dataset. The results show that our Effi-CNN surpasses most currently existing solutions and can categorize many gestures with a low error rate. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Software effort estimation using convolutional neural network and fuzzy clustering

Adopting an efficient software process model is critical for building high-quality software applications. An important factor impacting the software development process is an accurate estimate of human effort required to complete the software project. While machine learning methods were historically used to develop estimation models, there has been little investigation into the potential of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for improving software effort estimation. One of the biggest obstacles in using DCNN for this purpose is the common nature of software datasets, which often consist of vectorized samples rather than matrices. To defeat this obstacle and reduce vagueness in software attribute measurement, this study uses Fuzzy theory to generate an appropriate two-dimensional datapoint representation. The fuzzy clustering is commonly used to split dataset samples into separate clusters, which can help to generate Fuzzy membership functions. This approach makes it easier to generate a two-dimensional array representation for each data sample based on the membership values, allowing it to be used as input to the DCNN model. The efficiency of the proposed model was thoroughly evaluated using PROMISE benchmark datasets. The findings based on mean absolute errors and standardized accuracy show that our proposed model produced very good performance with low error rates and outperformed several current state-of-the-art effort estimation models. Nonetheless, further research is needed to determine the impact of different cluster numbers and features on the performance of our model. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the possibility for incorporating DCNN into software effort estimates and highlights the viability of utilizing fuzzy modeling and clustering techniques to enhance the data representation of software datasets. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

We propose a method for next-speaker prediction, a task to predict who speaks in the next turn among multiple current listeners, in multi-party video conversation. Previous studies used non-verbal features, such as head movements and gaze behavior, for next-speaker prediction in face-to-face conversation. However, in video conversation, these non-verbal features are vague and ineffective because they look at the screen displaying other participants. Since non-verbal features include participant characteristics, it is necessary to use training data with rich combinations of participants to robustly predict the next speaker. Previous studies used training data with a limited number of combinations of participants because the data consist only of recorded data. Therefore, the proposed method uses 1) novel non-verbal features for next-speaker prediction in video conversation, specifically facial expressions, hand movements and speech segments, and 2) data augmentation of participant combinations in the training data. We conducted experiments to evaluate the proposed method, and the results using video-conversation data indicate its effectiveness. © 2023 IEEE.

Modernization and intense industrialization have led to a substantial improvement in people’s quality of life. However, the aspiration for achieving an improved quality of life results in environmental contamination. A primary consequence of environmental degradation is air pollution, resulting from rising levels of poisonous chemicals in the atmosphere, which may induce detrimental health conditions in humans. It is harmful to both humans and agriculture. Given that the effects of air pollution on plants may not be readily apparent, it is important to analyse the necessary data and compute the outcomes. Farmers prioritise on pests and plant diseases, frequently neglecting the detrimental impacts of air pollution. Some plant species can withstand high amounts of pollution from suspended particulate matter and accumulated gases, while others are more susceptible to harm. Therefore, plants’ reaction to air pollution is influenced by the kind of harmful compounds, their levels, and the plant’s susceptibility to them. The LSTM +CNN Proposed Ensemble method may be used to analyse the impact of air pollution on agriculture by examining trends in crop production over time and predicting which crop is more resistant based on the pollution data. The initiative created for this aim may assist farmers in determining the most suitable crop to cultivate in their fields to minimize the impact of air pollution on agricultural yield. The findings show deep learning algorithms correctly predict hourly pollutant concentrations such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ground-level ozone, and particulate matter 2.5, along with the hourly Air Quality Index (AQI) for California. A proposed model used test RMSE values as a measure to evaluate prediction performance, achieving the best possible results. © 2025 SCPE.

Fake Face Detection Based on Fusion of Spatial Texture and High-Frequency Noise

The rapid development of the Internet has led to the widespread dissemination of manipulated facial images, significantly impacting people's daily lives. With the continuous advancement of Deepfake technology, the generated counterfeit facial images have become increasingly challenging to distinguish. There is an urgent need for a more robust and convincing detection method. Current detection methods mainly operate in the spatial domain and transform the spatial domain into other domains for analysis. With the emergence of transformers, some researchers have also combined traditional convolutional networks with transformers for detection. This paper explores the artifacts left by Deepfakes in various domains and, based on this exploration, proposes a detection method that utilizes the steganalysis rich model to extract high-frequency noise to complement spatial features. We have designed two main modules to fully leverage the interaction between these two aspects based on traditional convolutional neural networks. The first is the multi-scale mixed feature attention module, which introduces artifacts from high-frequency noise into spatial textures, thereby enhancing the model's learning of spatial texture features. The second is the multi-scale channel attention module, which reduces the impact of background noise by weighting the features. Our proposed method was experimentally evaluated on mainstream datasets, and a significant amount of experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in detecting Deepfake forged faces, outperforming the majority of existing methods.

Cognitive diagnosis is an important issue of intelligent education systems,which aims to estimate students'proficiency on specific knowledge *** existing studies rely on the assumption of static student states and ig-nore the dynamics of proficiency in the learning process,which makes them unsuitable for online learning *** this paper,we propose a unified temporal item response theory(UTIRT)framework,incorporating temporality and random-ness of proficiency evolving to get both accurate and interpretable diagnosis ***,we hypothesize that stu-dents'proficiency varies as a Wiener process and describe a probabilistic graphical model in UTIRT to consider temporali-ty and randomness ***,based on the relationship between student states and exercising answers,we hy-pothesize that the answering result at time k contributes most to inferring a student's proficiency at time k,which also re-flects the temporality aspect and enables us to get analytical maximization(M-step)in the expectation maximization(EM)algorithm when estimating model *** UTIRT is a framework containing unified training and inferenc-ing methods,and is general to cover several typical traditional models such as Item Response Theory(IRT),multidimen-sional IRT(MIRT),and temporal IRT(TIRT).Extensive experimental results on real-world datasets show the effective-ness of UTIRT and prove its superiority in leveraging temporality theoretically and practically over TIRT.

Safety-certified Receding-horizon Motion Planning and Containment Control of Autonomous Surface Vehicles via Neurodynamic Optimization

This paper addresses the safety-certified motion planning and containment control of under-actuated autonomous surface vehicles subject to model uncertainties, external disturbances, and input constraints in the presence of stationary and moving obstacles. A three-level modular control architecture is proposed with a trajectory generation module at its planning level, an adaptive guidance module at its guidance level, and a kinetic control module at its control level. Specifically, at the planning level, a safety-certified containment trajectory generator is designed to generate safe trajectories over a rolling time window to achieve containment formation and collision avoidance with neighboring ASVs, stationary obstacles, and moving obstacles via dynamic control barrier functions and twotimescale neurodynamic optimization models. At the guidance level, an adaptive line-of-sight guidance law is developed based on a finite-time predictor to estimate unknown sideslip angles and generate guidance commands. At the control level, an optimal control law is designed based on finite-time neural predictors and control Lyapunov functions for the autonomous surface vehicle with input constraints to follow the desired guidance commands. The effectiveness and characteristics of the proposed method are demonstrated via simulations and hardware-in-theloop experiments for cooperative exploration. IEEE

Drug sales forecasting in the pharmaceutical market using deep neural network algorithms

Drug sales and price forecasting have become an attractive investigation topic due to their important role in the pharmaceutical industry, A sales forecast helps every business to make better business decisions in overall business planning, budgeting, marketing, and risk management. The traditional forecasting method focuses on a conventional statistical model, which highly depends on the availability of historical sales data. However, for new drug entities, where not enough historical data is available, new methods of Machine Learning are applied. The aim of this paper is to identify an efficient Deep Neural Network algorithm suitable to forecast drug sales and pricing by applying Deep Neural Network Algorithms such as Multilayer Perceptron, Convolutional Neural Network, and Long Short-Term Memory, which are expected to perform well on this issue. The results are carried out to determine the efficiency of these algorithms by evaluating the performances of the models using MAE and RMSE performance metrics to identify the best algorithm for Drug Sales and Price Forecasting. The accepted accuracy should be more than 80\% of the actual value for quantity which is less than three thousand by unit and less than two dollars (USD) for price, Based on the results of the experiments Long Short Term Memory performed better than MLP and CNN for generating predictions with average Root Mean Square Error of for sales is 1.28(k) and Mean Absolute Error of about 0.85(k), and with average Root Mean Square Error for USD Prices is about 0.75, and Mean Absolute Error is about 0.44. The forecasts are then used to adjust stock levels according to the predictions. © (2024), (Society of Sytematic Innovation). All rights reserved.

Biomedical Named Entity Recognition (BioNER) plays a crucial role in automatically identifying specific categories of entities from biomedical texts. Currently, region-based methods have shown promising performance in BioNER. However, existing paradigms in the region-based methods suffer from inherent limitations, including the generation of negative samples, and the ignorance of token dependencies. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new paradigm, implemented as Token Cascade Tagger (TCT), which combines span identification and category classification. The TCT utilizes category information to enhance the correlation between the heads and tails of entities, effectively reducing the generation of negative samples. Additionally, we introduce a Token Dependency Tagger (TDT) that captures token dependencies within entity spans by identifying the longest span in a sentence. The TDT filters out incorrect spans and further improves the accuracy of span detection obtained from the TCT. Furthermore, we employ a multi-task learning framework to optimize both the TCT and TDT, leading to superior performance in BioNER. Extensive experiments on publicly available biomedical datasets demonstrate our method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods, achieving 92.44%, 92.54%, and 81.26% on NCBI-Disease, BC5CDR, and GENIA, respectively, in terms of F1 score. © 2024 The Authors.
