Foodborne illnesses significantly impact public health. Deep learning surveillance applications using social media data aim to detect early warning signals. However, labeling foodborne illness-related tweets for model training requires extensive human resources, making it challenging to collect a sufficient number of high-quality labels for tweets within a limited budget. The severe class imbalance resulting from the scarcity of foodborne illness-related tweets among the vast volume of social media further exacerbates the problem. Classifiers trained on a classimbalanced dataset are biased towards the majority class, making accurate detection difficult. To overcome these challenges, we propose EGAL, a deep learning framework for foodborne illness detection that uses small expert-labeled tweets augmented by crowdsourced-labeled and massive unlabeled data. Specifically, by leveraging tweets labeled by experts as a reward set, EGAL learns to assign a weight of zero to incorrectly labeled tweets to mitigate their negative influence. Other tweets receive proportionate weights to counter-balance the unbalanced class distribution. Extensive experiments on real-world TWEET-FID data show that EGAL outperforms strong baseline models across different settings, including varying expert-labeled set sizes and class imbalance ratios. A case study on a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infection linked to packaged salad greens demonstrates how the trained model captures relevant tweets offering valuable outbreak insights. EGAL, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has the potential to be deployed for real-time analysis of tweet streaming, contributing to foodborne illness outbreak surveillance efforts. © 2023 IEEE.

An accurate predictive model of temperature and humidity plays a vital role in many industrial processes that utilize a closed space such as in agriculture and building management. With the exceptional performance of deep learning on time-series data, developing a predictive temperature and humidity model with deep learning is propitious. In this study, we demonstrated that deep learning models with multivariate time-series data produce remarkable performance for temperature and relative humidity prediction in a closed space. In detail, all deep learning models that we developed in this study achieve almost perfect performance with an R value over 0.99. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

In the field of bioinformatics, the protein Post-Translational Modification (PTM) site prediction has been widely studied and Web Information Systems (WIS) has been deployed by researchers for this task. Through a literature review and benchmarking process, we identified the requirements which included quick predictions, efficient memory usage, and input validations. However, no detailed designs have been proposed so far, which may have contributed to some requirements not being implemented in some of the websites. Therefore, we propose a detailed WIS conceptual design, which can be used for predicting the sites of multiple PTM types, equipped with a validation algorithm and compared the usage of various string searching algorithms as well as file storage formats. Experiment results showed that the linear search algorithm is the fastest for this task and storing the protein data in npz format when performing multi-PTMs site prediction can assist in reducing memory usage. The proposed design can be implemented into user-friendly web tools that are both efficient in speed and memory usage in future studies. © 2022 IEEE.

Following the evolution of technology, researchers have conducted several studies to propose reliable scholarship recommender systems. However, few have explored the data storage systems, which are highly beneficial to collect huge volumes of real data in training the recommender systems. In this paper, a database design for collecting such data was proposed, equipped with integer encodings for categorical variables and a method to normalize variables with varying ranges. Using Connoly and Begg's database design method, the final design consisted of a normalized Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) and data dictionaries. The design was also constructed to support usages of various data for determining scholarship recipients, including education history, achievements, and organizational experiences. The proposed design can be implemented on information systems to allow easier information access for scholarships in Indonesia. © 2022 IEEE.

Malaria is a communicable disease with half of the global population at risk due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. A massive number of studies are dedicated to malaria research, so it plays a key role in formulating the proper prevention strategy and effective malaria treatment. With the overwhelming number of updated publications in the field, an unsupervised text mining approach such as topic modeling may provide an alternative method for the malaria researcher to keep pace with new insights. In this work, we collect metadata of malaria publications from the PubMed database to perform BERT-based topic modeling to find well-defined topics regarding malaria research. The method is largely based on the popular BERTopic pipeline. We compare the performance of three different language models to generate document embeddings from the data. The dimension reduction and the density-based clustering algorithm are used to cluster the embeddings. The topic representation is computed based on the semantic similarity of the class TF-IDF representation. The substance of the resulting topics is then manually annotated based on the top words of each topic. We demonstrate that by merging initial topics into larger topics using hierarchical clustering and manual content-based examination, the evaluated coherence measure can be further improved, thus enhancing the topic's interpretability. Our modeling result is able to extract ten major topics recurring in the malaria research publication published from 2017-2022. Interference is a critical factor that degrades wireless network performance. In IEEE 802.11 wireless broadcast networks, hidden terminals and concurrent transmissions are the primary sources of interference due to the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) mechanism. Therefore, analyzing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) distribution is essential for evaluating network performance, whose derivation relates to the transmission probabilities of hidden terminals and concurrent transmissions. In this study, we utilize the existing semi-markov process (SMP) model to calculate these transmission probabilities. Subsequently, we employ the Laplace transform to analyze the SINR distribution in IEEE 802.11 broadcast ad-hoc networks on highways. Based on the derived SINR distribution, we further evaluate the reliability and capacity. This approach can be readily extended to two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) scenarios by employing d-dimensional (1 ≤ d ≤ 3, dD) point process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves high accuracy under small to medium interference ranges. Additionally, the analysis remains highly accurate for receivers within 70 meters, even in scenarios with large interference ranges. Accurately predicting an owl species based on its sound can be helpful for owl conservation. To build an accurate model for owl sound classification, deep learning is currently the most preferred algorithm, due to its excellent performance for modeling audio data. However, deep learning is generally underperformed for a small dataset, which is the case for recognizing scops owl sound. To overcome the issue, we proposed a transfer learning strategy, which is common for computer vision tasks, that can alleviate overfitting in a deep learning model for the owl sound classification. In our approach, we propose a neural network architecture consisting of the backbone of a EfficientNet model pre-Trained on the massive ImageNet database. The model takes the sound input that has been converted as two image representations: Spectrogram and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients. Our strategy enables the use of a relatively small size of pre-Trained image classification model, which is widely available, for transfer learning in owl sound classification. Deploying the lightweight model in an automatic sound classifier provides a fast and accurate tool for various owl conservation purposes. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Graph-based data present unique challenges and opportunities for machine learning. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), and especially those algorithms that capture graph topology through message passing for neighborhood aggregation, have been a leading solution. However, these networks often require substantial computational resources and may not optimally leverage the information contained in the graph's topology, particularly for large-scale or complex *** propose Topology Coordinate Neural Network (TCNN) and Directional Virtual Coordinate Neural Network (DVCNN) as novel and efficient alternatives to message passing GNNs, that directly leverage the graph's topology, sidestepping the computational challenges presented by competing algorithms. Our proposed methods can be viewed as a reprise of classic techniques for graph embedding for neural network feature engineering, but they are novel in that our embedding techniques leverage ideas in Graph Coordinates (GC) that are lacking in current *** results, benchmarked against the Open Graph Benchmark Leaderboard, demonstrate that TCNN and DVCNN achieve competitive or superior performance to message passing GNNs. For similar levels of accuracy and ROC-AUC, TCNN and DVCNN need far fewer trainable parameters than contenders of the OGBN Leaderboard. The proposed TCNN architecture requires fewer parameters than any neural network method currently listed in the OGBN Leaderboard for both OGBN-Proteins and OGBN-Products datasets. Conversely, our methods achieve higher performance for a similar number of trainable parameters. These results hold across diverse datasets and edge features, underscoring the robustness and generalizability of our methods. By providing an efficient and effective alternative to message passing GNNs, our work expands the toolbox of techniques for graph-based machine learning. Depressive Disorders (DD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders in the world that may lead to suicide cases. To prevent the latter, ubiquitous early detection systems may be effective. Recent studies have since researched the development of such systems by exploiting several forms of data, including video, audio, Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA), and passive sensing data using sensors embedded in mobile devices. To summarize the trends, opportunities, and existing challenges in this field, this study reviewed 15 papers to answer four research questions. EMA was the most popular data to be used in this task, but other approaches, such as using video, audio, and typing behaviors, may be considered due to the subjectivity of EMA. These data were typically recorded using smartphones and analyzed using Machine Learning (ML). However, most of the developed systems had yet to be implemented. Overall, it was concluded that further studies may need to explore usages of more objective data in multimodal approaches as well as consider using Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) to deploy these systems to provide more effective and efficient diagnoses. Future studies must also take into account the existing challenges of the data and infrastructures, such as the weaknesses of several data types, limitations of mobile devices, as well as the challenges of diagnosis approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

The box office (BO) income had significantly declined up to 80% in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. To minimize further financial risks, multiplex (multiple cinema complexes) owners need to analyze their potential income for each movie, each week. Therefore, we developed a proper data mining strategy that allows multiplex owners to analyze and discover insights on how successfully produced movies could be. The methodology comprises (1) data loading and exploration, (2) data cleaning, (3) data selection, integration, and transformation using Pentaho, (4) data mining in which the results were stored in the MySQL database, and (5) pattern evaluation and presentation using Qlik Sense as the Business Intelligence (BI) dashboard. Based on our data mining methodology, we revealed that drama, comedy, action, and thriller are favorite genres. We also found that DreamWorks Animation and Pixar Animation Studios are both the most popular production houses, even Apatow Productions and Escape Artists still have the biggest revenue on average.
