Liver segmentation is a challenging problem where fully supervised deep learning models require large amounts of voxel-wise labels, which are usually laborious, expensive, and time consuming to obtain. However, massive non-annotated 3D CT volumes are usually easily accessible. Most deep learning based works to address semi-supervised CT medical image segmentation problems have mostly been graph-based or adversarial-based. In sharp contrast, this work investigates the potential of a semi-supervised learning method;novel self-training framework utilizing self-paced learning strategy to generate and select pseudo-labels from easy-to-transfer(well represented classes) to hard-to-transfer(less represented classes) samples. The proposed scheme introduces an effective pseudo-label generation and selection algorithm to generate highly confident pseudo-labels, jointly learn and optimize a model which can be solved by alternatively generating pseudo labels on unlabeled target data and re-training the model with the generated labels. Further, we also propose a novel class balancing framework to avoid the gradual eminence of easy-to-transfer discriminative features on pseudo-label generation utilizing class-wise normalization of confidence scores. Comprehensive experiments conducted on publicly available datasets show that the proposed method outperformed other state-of-the-art semi-supervised and some fully supervised methods on the segmentation results of tumors and achieved very competitive performance for liver segmentation. © 2020 IEEE.

Sugarcane plantations in Indonesia are still managed in a labor-intensive manner, especially plantation-owned by farmers. Labor intensive means that every stage of work in sugarcane plantation management still uses manpower. One of the jobs in sugarcane plantations that requires a lot of labor is sugar cane harvesting. Trend changing in the workforce gender would affect the quantity and quality of jobs, which is determined by the workforce's capacity and the workload of the work performed. The result of this research was a sugarcane agricultural calculator that made it simple for farmers to measure manpower and transportation requirements in estimating harvest costs. Manpower and transportation of harvested sugarcane commodities were estimated through the workload approach, namely, crop production and manpower's ability to carry a load. These two components helped sugarcane farmers to determine manpower and transportation during the harvest. The final yield produced by the projected harvest labor cost would be known immediately.

Plant growth with complex organic matter content can be enhanced by using oil palm by-products. These organic materials can maintain the water supply in the plant body. Therefore, in oil palm plantations with significant groundwater consumption, organic matter’s the ability to sustain water availability. Caterpillars that devour palm leaves are among the numerous pests that threaten oil palm plantations. Predators of leaf-eating caterpillars use the holly rose flower (Turnera subulata) in oil palm farms as a habitat. Therefore, the effect of the type and dose treatment of oil palm by-products on the growth of Turnera subulata was observed to support sustainable water management in oil palm plantations. The research was carried out using a factorial design arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two components: the type of palm oil mill by-product (boiler ash, empty bunches, and solid) and the dose of a by-product (% volume) consisting of four dosages (0, 25, 33, and 50% volume). The research data were analyzed using variance at the 5% test level. A DMRT test at the 5% test level was conducted on the treatment that had a significant effect. The growth of Turnera subulata was most positively impacted by a solid application dose of 50% volume. Turnera subulata plants responded the least favorably to the application of empty bunches in any dose treatment.

The accurate screening of candidate drug ligands against target proteins through computational approaches is of prime interest to drug development efforts. Such virtual screening depends in part on methods to predict the binding affinity between ligands and proteins. Many computational models for binding affinity prediction have been developed, but with varying results across targets. Given that ensembling or meta-modeling approaches have shown great promise in reducing model-specific biases, we develop a framework to integrate published force-field-based empirical docking and sequence-based deep learning models. In building this framework, we evaluate many combinations of individual base models, training databases, and several meta-modeling approaches. We show that many of our meta-models significantly improve affinity predictions over base models. Our best meta-models achieve comparable performance to state-of-the-art deep learning tools exclusively based on 3D structures, while allowing for improved database scalability and flexibility through the explicit inclusion of features such as physicochemical properties or molecular descriptors. We further demonstrate improved generalization capability by our models using a large-scale benchmark of affinity prediction as well as a virtual screening application benchmark. Overall, we demonstrate that diverse modeling approaches can be ensembled together to gain meaningful improvement in binding affinity prediction. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Foundational Models (FMs) are gaining increasing attention in the biomedical AI ecosystem due to their ability to represent and contextualize multimodal biomedical data. These capabilities make FMs a valuable tool for a variety of tasks, including biomedical reasoning, hypothesis generation, and interpreting complex imaging data. In this review paper, we address the unique challenges associated with establishing an ethical and trustworthy biomedical AI ecosystem, with a particular focus on the development of FMs and their downstream applications. We explore strategies that can be implemented throughout the biomedical AI pipeline to effectively tackle these challenges, ensuring that these FMs are translated responsibly into clinical and translational settings. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of key stewardship and co-design principles that not only ensure robust regulation but also guarantee that the interests of all stakeholders-especially those involved in or affected by these clinical and translational applications-are adequately represented. We aim to empower the biomedical AI community to harness these models responsibly and effectively. As we navigate this exciting frontier, our collective commitment to ethical stewardship, co-design, and responsible translation will be instrumental in ensuring that the evolution of FMs truly enhances patient care and medical decision-making, ultimately leading to a more equitable and trustworthy biomedical AI ecosystem. © 2024, CC BY.

State-of-the-art intracortical neuroprostheses currently enable communication at 60+ words per minute for anarthric individuals by training on over 10K sentences to account for phoneme variability in different word contexts. There is limited understanding about whether this performance can be maintained in decoding naturalistic speech with 40K+ word vocabularies across elicited, spontaneous, and conversational speech contexts. We introduce a vocal-unit-level generalization test to explicitly evaluate neural decoder performance with an expanded and more diverse behavioral repertoire. Tested on neural decoders modeling zebra finch vocalization, an analog to human vocal production, we compare three decoders with different input types: spike trains, neural factors, and firing rates. The factors and rates are latent neural features inferred using trained Latent Factor Analysis via Dynamical Systems (LFADS) models that capture the population neural dynamics during vocal production. While the conventional random holdout generalization error measure is similar for all three decoders, factor- and rate-based decoders outperform spike-based decoders when testing vocal-unit-holdout generalization error. These results suggest the later models better adapt to flexible vocalization inference when trained with partial observation of data variation, motivating further exploration of decoders incorporating latent neural and vocalization dynamics. © 2024 IEEE.

The production of biofuels to be used as bioenergy under combustion processes generates some gaseous emissions (CO, CO₂, NO_x, SO_x, and other pollutants), affecting living organisms and requiring careful assessments. However, obtaining such information experimentally for data evaluation is costly and time-consuming and its in situ obtaining for regional biomasses (e.g., those from Northeast Brazil (NEB) is still a major challenge. This paper reports on the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of the main air pollutants (CO, CO₂, NO, and SO₂) produced during the direct biomass combustion (N₂/O₂:80/20%) with the use of ultimate analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen). 116 worldwide biomasses were used as input data, which is a relevant alternative to overcome the lack of experimental resources in NEB and obtain such information. Cross-validation was conducted with k-fold to optimize the ANNs and performance was analyzed with the use of statistical errors for accuracy assessments. The results showed an acceptable statistical performance for all architectures of ANNs, with 0.001–12.41% MAPE, 0.001–5.82 mg Nm⁻³ MAE, and 0.03–52.30 mg Nm⁻³ RMSE, highlighting the high precision of the emissions studied. On average, the differences between predicted and real values for CO, CO₂, NO, and SO₂ emissions from NEB biomasses were approximately 0.01%, 10⁻⁶%, 0.14%, and 0.05%, respectively. Pearson coefficient provided consistent results of concentration of the ultimate analysis in relation to the emissions studied and effectiveness of the test set in the developed models. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
