作者： John Maeda Steven Heller Tim Hoover Has been a design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers since January 2014 helping entrepreneurs and portfolio companies to build design into their company cultures. He served as the president of Rhode Island School of Design for six years through 2013 and also served as an associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab. Maeda has been a practicing designer since 1990 and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation. He serves on the boards of several corporations including Sonos and Wieden + Kennedy and is chair of eBay's Design Advisory Board. His four published books include The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership. Maeda is the recipient of a variety of international awards for his creative work including induction into the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame. In 2001 he received the White House National Design Award in 2002 he received the Mainichi Design Prize in Japan and in 2005 he was awarded the Raymond Loewy Foundation Prize in Germany. Maeda earned a BS and an MS from MIT in computer science and electrical engineering. He received a PhD in design science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan as well as an MBA from Arizona State University. Co‐chair and co‐founder of the MFA Designer as Author and Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was the art director of The New York Times Book Review and now writes the VISUALS column for the NYTBR. He also writes “The Daily Heller” at *** a weekly online design column for Atlantic magazine. He is author co‐author and editor of more than 165 books on the history and practice of graphic design illustration and satiric art. His forthcoming books include 100 Classic Graphic Design Magazines (Laurence King Publishers) and Raw Data: The Process Behind Information Graphics (Thames + Hudson). Numerical simulations of laser wakefield particle accelerators play a key role in the understanding of the complex acceleration process and in the design of expensive experimental facilities. As the size and complexity of simulation output grows, an increasingly acute challenge is the practical need for computational techniques that aid in scientific knowledge discovery. To that end, we present a set of data-understanding algorithms that work in concert in a pipeline fashion to automatically locate and analyze high-energy particle bunches undergoing acceleration in very large simulation datasets. These techniques work cooperatively by first identifying features of interest in individual timesteps, then integrating features across timesteps, and based on the information-derived perform analysis of temporally dynamic features. This combination of techniques supports accurate detection of particle beams enabling a deeper level of scientific understanding of physical phenomena than has been possible before. By combining efficient data analysis algorithms and state-of-the-art data management we enable high-performance analysis of extremely large particle datasets in 3D. We demonstrate the usefulness of our methods for a variety of 2D and 3D datasets and discuss the performance of our analysis pipeline. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Active appearance model (AAM) has been widely used in face tracking and recognition. However, accuracy and efficiency are always two main challenges with the AAM search. The paper therefore proposed a fast appearance-model based 3D face tracking algorithm to track a face appearance with significant translation, rotation, and scaling activities by using stochastic meta-descent (SMD) optimization scheme to accelerate the appearance model search and to improve the tracking efficiency and accuracy. The proposed algorithm constructs an active face appearance model by using several semantic landmark points extracted from each frame and then processes the appearance model search to approximate the model translating, rotating, and scaling by using the SMD filter to minimize the appearance difference between the current model and the new observation. We compared the results with both a conventional AAM and a Camshift filter and found that our algorithm outperforms both two in terms of efficiency and accuracy in tracking a fast moving, rotating, and scaling face object in a video sequence.

This paper gives a brief overview of the international workshop on semantic technologies in system maintenance. It describes a number of semantic technologies (e.g., ontologies, text mining, and knowledge integration techniques) and identifies diverse tasks in software maintenance where the use of semantic technologies can be beneficial, such as traceability, system comprehension, software artifact analysis, and information integration.

Automated matching of semantic service descriptions is the key to automatic service discovery and binding. But when trying to find a match for a certain request it may often happen, that the request cannot be serviced by a single offer but could be handled by combining existing offers. In this case automatic service composition is needed. Although automatic composition is an active field of research it is mainly viewed as a planning problem and treated separatedly from service discovery. In this paper we argue that an integrated approach to the problem is better than seperating these issues as is usually done. We propose an approach that integrates service composition into service discovery and matchmaking to match service requests that ask for multiple connected effects, discuss general issues involved in describing and matching such services and present an efficient algorithm implementing our ideas.

With a very modest investment in computer hardware and the open source local data manger (LDM) software from UCAR's Unidata program Center, an individual researcher can receive a variety of NEXRAD Level III gridded rainfall products, and the unprocessed Level II data in real-time from most NEXRAD radars. Additionally, the National Climatic data Center has vast archives of these products and Level II data. Still, significant obstacles remain in order to unlock the full potential of the data. One set of obstacles is related to effective management of multi-terrabyte data sets: storing, compressing, and backing up. A second set of obstacles, for hydrologists and hydrometeorologists in particular, is that the NEXRAD Level III products are not well suited for application in hydrology. There is a strong need for the generation of high-quality products directly from the Level II data with well-documented steps that include quality control, removal of false echoes, rainfall estimation algorithms with variety of corrections, coordinate conversion and georeferencing, conversion to a convenient data format(s), and integration with GIS. For hydrologists it is imperative that these procedures are basin-centered as opposed to radar-centered. Thirdly, the amount of data present in a multi-year, multi-radar dataset is such that simple cataloging and indexing of the data is not sufficient. Rather, sophisticated metadata extraction and management techniques are required. The authors describe and discuss the Hydro-NEXRAD software system that addresses the above three challenges. With support from the National science Foundation through its ITR program, the authors are developing a basin-centered framework for addressing all these issues in a comprehensive manner, tailored specifically for use of NEXRAD data in hydrology and hydrometeorology. A challenge of existing program comprehension approaches is to provide consistent and flexible representations for software systems. Maintainers have to match their mental models with the different representations these tools provide. In this paper, we present a novel approach that addresses this issue by providing a consistent ontological representation for both source code and documentation. The ontological representation unifies information from various sources, and therefore reduces the maintainers' comprehension efforts. In addition, representing software artifacts in a formal ontology enables maintainers to formulate hypotheses about various properties of software systems. These hypotheses can be validated through an iterative exploration of information derived by our ontology inference engine. The implementation of our approach is presented in detail, and a case study is provided to demonstrate the applicability of our approach during the architectural evolution of a Web site content management system

The wide availability of mobile devices equipped with wireless communication devices paves the way for building highly dynamic communities of ad-hoc networks. For an asynchronous service discovery in this environment, we suggest the use of mobile agents. Here, we concentrate on file sharing and exchanging services. We adopt a new asynchronous approach for discovering and locating these files, since the availability of files in this particular domain will change significantly over time when nodes constantly join and leave the network. In this paper, we present a typical application scenario, highlight the main components of the system architecture and discuss the technical challenges facing us while trying to port main infrastructural features of traditional database management systems to our mobile light-weight software agents. © 2003 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). Applying meta search systems is a suitable method for supporting the user if there are many different retrieval services available on the Web. Due to information splitting strategies of literature services existing meta search systems either provide minimal integration of results or slow response times. We present an approach that combines techniques of personalization and query processing in order to satisfy the user's demand for both fast and comprehensive results. In order to evaluate and compare different query processing strategies and additional influencing parameters we developed a simulation tool called SIMPSON. Thereby, we can observe the performance of query processing within the context of different response times of the underlying digital library services in the Web, with different kinds of user queries, and with different sizes of query results. To evaluate and compare the performance of different query processing and duplicate detection strategies we developed metrics, particularly with regard to user satisfaction. We present results from our first experiments with SIMPSON, focusing on duplicate detection, query specification, and Web server performance of the underlying digital library services. © 2002 IEEE.
