In most human-robot interfaces, the user completely controls the robot that operates as a passive tool without adaptation capabilities. However, a synergetic human-robot interface where both agents collaborate could improve the user's performance while reducing the cognitive and physical workload. Specifically, when considering this framework applied to rehabilitation, we examined a shared collaborative control between a human user and an adaptive biologically inspired neurocontroller in order to perform reaching movements with a simulated prosthetic arm. When this neurocontroller was enabled, it progressively learned from the user to control the prosthetic arm, increasing its role in the shared performance and facilitating the user's reaching movements. This resulted in the user's performance enhancement and in a reduction of his/her cognitive workload. The long term goal of this work is to contribute to the development of the next generation of intelligent human-robotic interfaces for rehabilitation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

When generating locomotion, it is particularly challenging to adjust the motion's style. This paper introduces a component-based system for human locomotion composition that drives off a set of example locomotion clips. The distinctive style of each example is analyzed in the form of sub-motion components decomposed from separate body parts via independent component analysis (ICA). During the synthesis process, we use these components as combinatorial ingredients to generate new locomotion sequences that are stylistically different from the example set. Our system is designed for novice users who do not have much knowledge of important locomotion properties, such as the correlations throughout the body. Thus, the proposed system analyzes the examples in a unsupervised manner and synthesizes an output locomotion from a small number of control parameters. Our experimental results show that the system can generate physically plausible locomotion in a desired style at interactive speed. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

Indonesia is a country straddling the equator line setting off a tropical climate, characterized by heavy rainfall, high temperatures, high humidity but low winds. It is also located in Southeast Asia, with a huge archipelago with total land and sea area reaching to about 5 million km2, comprised of more than 13,667 islands and total population of 259,940,857 (based on population census Dec 2010). The structure of the tectonics of Indonesia are very complex, because it is a meeting point of two tectonic plates, Indo-Australia and Eurasia, creating subduction zone and the formation of many volcanoes with about 90 of them remain active. These conditions give rise to tropical geohazards as well as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods and forest fires. Some of them recorded as staggering world disasters such as Tambora volcanic eruption in 1815 and Krakatau eruption in 1883. In addition, in December 2004 a devasting Tsunami struck Aceh Province. Based on the Asia Pacific Disaster Report prepared by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the UN Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on 26 October 2010, during 1980-2009 period in Asia Pacific, Indonesia has fourth ranked in the list of highest natural disasters about 312 cases, second ranked in the list of highest number of death approximately 191.164 people also has caused economic losses of at least US 22.5 billion. In this paper we can learn on disaster management in Indonesia with case studies in Jakarta and Yogyakarta Provinces.

As far as we know, there is not a Node Localization Algorithm (NLA) that presents the same accuracy for all possible scenarios. We believe that a NLA should be able to interpret the dynamic information of the environment. In this sense, simple NLAs are rather focused and might perform well for specific scenarios and applications. Therefore, information fusion and context awareness seems to be an appropriate approach to address this issue. We propose the Smart Environmental Architecture for Node Localization (SEA-NL), which is composed by two main elements: (i) the Smart Beacon Nodes (SBNs) and (ii) the Logical Position of Nodes (LPN). In (i) the obstruction level indicator is estimated and can improve the estimation of distances among nodes. In (ii) environment information and a one to one relation between a node and an object are used and can also improve location estimation. Via simulation, our architecture was tested indoors and outdoors considering three localization algorithms: the Weighed Centroid Localization (WCL), the Centroid Localization, and the Triangular Centroid Localization. Finally, we present an accuracy comparison among NLAs used in isolated way, and by using the SBNs, the LPN, and the SEA-NL, where our architecture improves WCL up to ~30.88%. © 2012 IEEE.

In classifying malware, an open research question is how to combine similar extracted data from program analyzers in such a way that the advantages of the analyzers accrue and the errors are minimized. We propose an approach to fusing multiple program analysis outputs by abstracting the features to a common form and utilizing a disjoint union fusion function. The approach is evaluated in an experiment measuring classification accuracy on fused dynamic trace data on over 18,000 malware files. The results indicate that a naïve fusion approach can yield improvements over non-fused results, but the disjoint union fusion function outperforms naïve union by a statistically significant amount in three of four classification methods applied. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Since the 1990s massive open online courses (MOOCs) have offered web-based learning on a large scale and with open access. The leading MOOC providers in 2014 – Udemy, Coursera and edX – vary in detail but share the goal of facilitating learning for unlimited audiences at no cost or minimal charge, overcoming socioeconomic hurdles and opening education to all. The potential is strong, and data shows promising registration figures from India and economically developing countries. Yet MOOCs fall short of their goal of widespread and readily accessed education, impeded by technology challenges, lack of basic education and predominance of English as the language of instruction. Maintaining a high standard of educational quality is challenging, and attrition rates are very high. Those in library and information science can facilitate learning through MOOCs and also benefit by using the platform to build awareness of the professional field.

The objective of this research was to examine needs of collaborative digital library for secondary school students. 132 teachers and 397students from 132 secondary schools were selected by multi-stage random sampling method as samples. Data were collected during December 2011 - February 2012 by questionnaires and recording forms. Data were statically analyzed by using the percentage, mean, standard deviation and independent t-test. The outcome revealed that needs of collaborative digital library were virtual spaces consisted of 4 main aspects: 1) public area, 2) personal area, 3) collaborative area and 4) social activities area. The result illustrated that teachers were statistical significantly needed more in every aspect than the students at the level of 0.01. This study was a part to fulfill Ph.D dissertation and the result will be used to develop a prototype system in the future. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
