We develop an algorithm for merging plans that are represented in a richly expressive language. Specifically, we are concerned with plans that have (i) quantitative temporal constraints, (ii) actions that are not instantaneous, but rather have temporal extent, and (iii) conditional branches. Given a set S of such plans, our algorithm finds a set of constraints that jointly ensure that the plans in S are mutually consistent, if such a set of constraints exists. The algorithm has three phases. In the first, it employs a new data structure, a conditional simple temporal network (CSTN), to identify conflicts between the plans. Next, it uses an approach developed by Yang (1997) to suggest a potential resolution of the identified conflicts. Finally, the CSTN is again used to check whether the proposed resolution observes all the temporal constraints. This paper proposes an interactive architecture compiler for SC multirate circuits that allows the automated design from frequency specifications to building block implementation, here applied to the design and synthesis of multistage SC decimators. The compiler provides a library of different topologies that comprises a few independent multi-decimation building blocks. New building blocks defined by the users are also available for design of a specific stage. A design example of a 7th order SC decimator illustrates the efficient synthesis of the corresponding resulting circuits that achieve the required anti-aliasing amplitude responses with respect to the speed requirements of the operational amplifiers and also the minimum capacitance spread and total capacitor area.

With growing interest in Chinese Language Processing, numerous NLP tools (e.g. word segmenters, part-of-speech taggers, and parsers) for Chinese have been developed all over the world. However, since no large-scale bracketed corpora are available to the public, these tools are trained on the corpora with different segmentation criteria, part-of-speech tagsets and bracketing guidelines, and therefore, comparisons are difficult. As a first step towards addressing this issue, we have been preparing a 100-thousand-word bracketed corpus since late 1998 and plan to release it to the public summer 2000. In this paper, we will address several challenges in building the corpus, namely, creating annotation guidelines, ensuring annotation accuracy and maintaining a high level of community involvement.

An extension of the kernel-based pattern recognition method using a genetic algorithm is proposed. The method is suited to evolvable pattern recognition hardware using FPGAs. In the conventional method one common kernel function is used in the superposition to make discrimination functions. In the extended method each region of the kernel function is optimized individually. For the kernel-region optimization we use a genetic algorithm to solve a large combinatorial problem almost impossible to solve using any brute-force search. A chromosome represents the kernel region in an n-dimensional pattern space, and each locus corresponds to one of the candidates (genes) for an edge length of the kernel region. We have applied the extended method to a sonar spectrum recognition problem and obtained a recognition accuracy of 83.9%, which is much higher than the 62.0% obtained using the conventional kernel-based method and is also better than 82.7% obtained using the nearest neighbor method and the 83.0% obtained using a neural network (backpropagation algorithm). We have analyzed the individually optimized kernel regions and shown that the GA process automatically extracts features in the patterns and embeds the features in the kernel regions.

A computer-based design is carried out to synthesize and evaluate the performances of the corresponding resulting circuits, in order to achieve the required anti-aliasing amplitude responses, to relax the speed requirements of the operational amplifiers, and also to reduce the capacitance spread and total capacitor area. This paper proposes a computer-automated synthesis of SC decimators with a high decimating factor based on the statistical approach of the program (ISCMRATE). This methodology is implemented based on multi-decimation building blocks, such as externally cascaded, internally cascaded or ladder structures and polyphase input networks. The design criteria are given to obtain and evaluate the performance of the corresponding resulting circuits. A design example of a 7/sup th/ order SC lowpass elliptic decimator with M=10 is given to illustrate the above proposed methodology.

This article introduces the concept of synthetic cultures. These are role profiles for enacting dimensions of national culture. The full profiles are given for 10 synthetic cultures, based on Gert Hofstede's dimensions of national culture. They can be used for training or simulation/gaming. Examples of their application are presented. Apart from examples of existing games, suggestions are made for creating custom simulations that use synthetic cultures. Experiences of players are mentioned, both in face-to-face and in electronically mediated settings. Special attention is paid to debriefing issues. The article concludes with practical advice to prospective game leaders. © 1999 Sage Publications, Inc.

Progress in cognitive robotics can comeeither fromefforts to provide physical robots with more autonomy, or from efforts to make AI techniques more generally applicable to the needs of robotic agents. Weare conducting research on dynamic plan management, whichis an instance of the latter type of effort. In this paper, we provide an overview of our research project. Plan managementis the process (or set of related processes) by which a goal-directed agent coordinates, updates, and monitors its plans in response to ongoing changes in its environment. We discuss the main challenges in automating plan management, and then illustrate our approach by focusing on one plan management task: evaluating options for action in the context of existing plans. We also briefly describe the Plan Management Agent (PMA), a system weare building as a testbed for our plan management theories. Although PMA is not a robotic system, weare interested in also applying dynamicplan managementechniques to mobile robots, whichis whyweare participating in this symposium. © 1998, AAAI (***). However, the essays make it equally clear that we must answer many new, intriguing questions to achieve the tantalizing goal of having a computer do for us what Charles Lutwidge Dodgson did more than a century ago for Alice Lidell and her sisters.
