Diagnosis of breast cancer by tissue analysis

In this paper, we propose a technique to locate abnormal growth of cells in breast tissue and suggest further pathological test, when require. We compare normal breast tissue with malignant invasive breast tissue by a series of image processing steps. Normal ductal epithelial cells and ductal/lobular invasive carcinogenic cells also consider for comparison here in this paper. In fact, features of cancerous breast tissue （invasive） are extracted and analyses with normal breast tissue. We also suggest the breast cancer recognition technique through image processing and prevention by controlling p53 gene mutation to some extent.

An hidden markov model-based transcription factor mining method

A text mining algorithm named HMM-TFM (Hidden Markov Model based transcription factor name mining) is presented. The proposed algorithm does not need a dictionary of transcription factor names. A small verb set is defined to filter sentences. Transcription factor names are mined according to the part of speech tagged by hidden Markov model. Experimental results show that the recall and precision of HMM-TFM achieve 74.2% and 77.9%, respectively. Copyright © 2013 American Scientific Publishers.

Michigan vs. pittsburgh style ga optimisation of fuzzy rule bases for gene expression analysis

Microarray studies and gene expression analysis have received a lot of attention and provide many promising avenues towards the understanding of fundamental questions in biology and medicine. In this paper, the authors perform gene expression analysis and apply two hybrid GA-fuzzy approaches to classify gene expression data. Both are based on fuzzy if-then rule bases but they differ in the way these rule bases are optimised. The authors employ both a Michigan style approach, where single rules are handled as individuals in the population of the genetic algorithm, and a Pittsburgh type algorithm, which treats whole rule sets as individuals. Experimental results show that both approaches achieve good classification accuracy but that the Michigan style algorithm clearly outperforms the Pittsburgh classifier. Copyright © 2013, IGI Global.

In this paper, we propose SocioPhone, a novel initiative to build a mobile platform for face-to-face interaction monitoring. Face-to-face interaction, especially conversation, is a fundamental part of everyday life. Interaction-aware applications aimed at facilitating group conversations have been proposed, but have not proliferated yet. Useful contexts to capture and support face-to-face interactions need to be explored more deeply. More important, recognizing delicate conversational contexts with commodity mobile devices requires solving a number of technical challenges. As a first step to address such challenges, we identify useful meta-linguistic contexts of conversation, such as turn-takings, prosodic features, a dominant participant, and pace. These serve as cornerstones for building a variety of interaction-aware applications. SocioPhone abstracts such useful meta-linguistic contexts as a set of intuitive APIs. Its runtime efficiently monitors registered contexts during in-progress conversations and notifies applications on-the-fly. Importantly, we have noticed that online turn monitoring is the basic building block for extracting diverse meta-linguistic contexts, and have devised a novel volume-topography-based method. We show the usefulness of SocioPhone with several interesting applications: SocioTherapist, SocioDigest, and Tug-of-War. Also, we show that our turnmonitoring technique is highly accurate and energy-efficient under diverse real-life situations. Copyright 2013 ACM.

The inherent heterogeneity of datasets on the Semantic Web has created a need to interlink them, and several tools have emerged that automate this task. In this paper we are interested in what happens if we enrich these matching tools with knowledge of the domain of the ontologies. We explore how to express the notion of a domain in terms usable for an ontology matching tool, and we examine various methods to decide what constitutes the domain of a given dataset. We show how we can use this in a matching tool, and study the effect of domain knowledge on the quality of the alignment. We perform evaluations for two scenarios: *** artists and UMLS medical terms. To quantify the added value of domain knowledge, we compare our domain-aware matching approach to a standard approach based on a manually created reference alignment. The results indicate that the proposed domain-aware approach indeed outperforms the standard approach, with a large effect on ambiguous concepts but a much smaller effect on unambiguous concepts. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper discusses on Malay language anaphor and antecedent candidate determination using the knowledge-poor techniques. The process to determine the candidate for anaphor and antecedent is important because the usage of pronouns in a text is not always considered as an anaphor. Sometimes pronoun referred to something outside the context or does not refer to any situation in the text. Such a situation is also exhibited in the use of pronouns in Malay language. Therefore, certain rules must be issued to identify the antecedent and anaphor candidate. Pronoun usage in Malay language does indicate the gender of the person, but to distinguish the status of the person such as imperial family, honorable people and common people. Thus, generic rules that have been used by other languages cannot simply be adapted for Malay language. The proposed solution concerns with the distance of each candidate and location of the Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) used to determine the anaphor candidate. As such, syntactic information, semantic information and distance of anaphor-antecedent are seen important to determine the antecedent candidate. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
