The dominant standards in multimedia content and service description, namely the MPEG-7 and the MPEG-21, have been expressed in XML Schema syntax. In addition, ontologies that capture the semantics of these standards have been developed using the semantic web languages. Since different communities in the industry and the academia work and are familiar with the Semantic Web environment or the XML environment, a Schema mapping framework and a Query mapping framework are needed that will allow querying multimedia content and service descriptions in a uniform way in both the XML and Semantic Web environments. We present in this paper SPARQL2XQuery 2.0, a framework that allows expressing semantic queries on top of XML data through the translation of SPARQL queries in XQuery syntax. SPARQL2XQuery 2.0 may work with both existing ontologies and with automatically produced ones, formed according to our XS2-OWL 2.0 transformation model. XS2-OWL 2.0 exploits the OWL 2.0 semantics and supports the new XML constructs introduced by XML Schema 1.1.

Business-to-Business (B2B) workflow/service interoperation across Virtual Organisations (VOs) brings about novel business scenarios. In these scenarios, parts of workflows (or services) corresponding to different partners can be aggregated in a producer-consumer manner, leading to hierarchical structures of added value interpreted as service value chains. Service Level Agreements (SLAs), which are contracts between service providers and service consumers, guarantee the expected quality of service (QoS) to different stakeholders at various levels of a service value chain. The essential requirements for such an SLA-based choreography of services include agile component-based infrastructure to support the corresponding choreography of their SLAs;proactive validation of SLAs to prevent violations;reactive validation of SLAs for penalty enforcement and breach management;and business enabling requirements such as trust, privacy, security and automation. In this paper we highlight the significance of these issues and propose their solutions. We then proceed to weave these solution components together into a comprehensive SLA validation framework that blends together two major systems: a rule based distributed system for SLA validation and a service monitoring system for the prevention of SLA violations.

Feature-Oriented Nonfunctional Requirement Analysis for Software Product Line

Domain analysis in software product line （SPL） development provides a basis for core assets design and imple- mentation by a systematic and comprehensive commonality/variability analysis. In feature-oriented SPL methods, products of the domain analysis are domain feature models and corresponding feature decision models to facilitate application-oriented customization. As in requirement analysis for a single system, the domain analysis in the SPL development should con- sider both flmctional and nonfunctional domain requirements. However, the nonfunctional requirements （NFRs） are often neglected in the existing domain analysis methods. In this paper, we propose a context-based method of the NFR analysis for the SPL development. In the method, NFRs are materialized by connecting nonfunctional goals with real-world context, thus NFR elicitation and variability analysis can be performed by context analysis for the whole domain with the assistance of NFR templates and NFR graphs. After the variability analysis, our method integrates both functional and nonfunc- tional perspectives by incorporating the nonfunctional goals and operationalizations into an initial functional feature model. NFR-related constraints are also elicited and integrated. Finally, a decision model with both functional and nonfunctional perspectives is constructed to facilitate application-oriented feature model customization. A computer-aided grading system （CAGS） product line is employed to demonstrate the method throughout the paper.

Blogs, Wikis, and Social Bookmark Tools have rapidly emerged on the Web. The reasons for their immediate success are that people are happy to share information, and that these tools provide an infrastructure for doing so without requiring any specific skills. At the moment, there exists no foundational research for these systems, and they provide only very simple structures for organising knowledge. Individual users create their own structures, but these can currently not be exploited for knowledge sharing. The objective of the seminar was to provide theoretical foundations for upcoming Web 2.0 applications and to investigate further applications that go beyond bookmark- and file-sharing. The main research question can be summarized as follows: How will current and emerging resource sharing systems support users to leverage more knowledge and power from the information they share on Web 2.0 applications? Research areas like Semantic Web, Machine Learning, information Retrieval, information Extraction, Social Network Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Library and information sciences, and Hypermedia systems have been working for a while on these questions. In the workshop, researchers from these areas came together to assess the state of the art and to set up a road map describing the next steps towards the next generation of social software. © 2008 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. We introduce the DeMorgan gate, an Independence of Causal Interactions (ICI) model that is capable of modeling opposing inuences, i.e., a mixture of positive and negative inuences of parents on a child. The model is a noisy version of a conjunctive normal form of Boolean functions and is an extension and a combination of the popular Noisy OR and Noisy-AND models, preserving their intuitive semantics. We report the results of a simple experiment testing the usefulness of the proposed model for elicitation of conditional probability distributions.

This paper proposes a system to reconstruct the 3D shape model of background regions for generating 3D video easily. As the progress of computer vision technologies continues, many 3D video systems have been developed that tend to focus on automatic 3D reconstruction to capture target (foreground) objects. On the other hand, the 3D shapes of background regions such as walls and floors are generally made manually, for example, using 3D modeling software such as CAD. However, the operation is not easy for novices. Our system provides an easy background modeling method for such users. User operations include segmenting multiple background images into several boxes by indi cating their vertices and giving the correspondence of the boxes between multiple images. As a result, the 3D coordinates of the vertices are calculated using a stereo vision algorithm.

The overwhelming amount of published literature in the biomedical domain and the growing number of collaborations across scientific disciplines results in an increasing topical complexity of research articles. This represents an immense challenge for efficient biomedical knowledge discovery from text. We present a new graphical model, the so-called Topic-Concept Model, which extends the basic Latent Dirichlet Allocation framework and reflects the generative process of indexing a PubMed abstract with terminological concepts from an ontology. The generative model captures the latent topic structure of documents by learning the statistical dependencies between words, topics and MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) concepts. A number of important tasks for biomedical knowledge discovery can be solved with the here introduced model. We provide results for the extraction of the hidden topic-concept structure from a large medical text collection, the identification of the most likely topics given a specific MeSH concept, and the extraction of statistical relationships between MeSH concepts and words. Moreover, we apply the introduced generative model to a challenging multi-label classification task. A benchmark with several classification methods on two independent data sets proves our method to be competitive. © 2008 ACM

A motivationally-aware version of the Ecolab system was developed with the aim of improving the learners' motivation. To gain some insight into the effects of motivational modeling on students' affective states, we observed the affect of 180 students interacting with either Ecolab or M-Ecolab. The affective states considered were based on existing coding schemes [10]. The results suggest that the motivationally-aware tutoring system seems to maintain students' delight over time. However, it seems the motivational interventions did not create new "virtuous cycles" of positive affect [10], or disrupt "vicious cycles", where a student persists in a negative affective state.

The focus of this paper is on the performance comparison of two simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms namely 6D Lu/Milios SLAM and Force Field Simulation (FFS). The two algorithms are applied to a 2D data set. Although the algorithms generate overall visually comparable results, they show strengths & weaknesses in different regions of the generated global maps. The question we address in this paper is, if different ways of evaluating the performance of SLAM algorithms project different strengths and how can the evaluations be useful in selecting an algorithm. We will compare the performance of the algorithms in different ways, using grid and pose based quality measures.
