A user model contains and maintains information about the user, which is needed to tailor information and services to each individual user's characteristics, usage behaviour and/or usage environment. This paper explores user modelling in a service-oriented framework for lifelong learning. It identifies lifelong learners' attributes that should be stored in a user model and proposes personalisation functionalities to support learning throughout life in the context of the L4All4 system.

Geographical information System (GIS) integrates operation and synthesis analysis of multi-factor information, satisfying the demand of high efficiency and visual performance in human computer Interaction, whereas Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology assigns and utilizes network resources flexibly, making information exchange more dynamic and real-time with participants' autonomy to certain extent. Therefore, by the thought of uniting information processing merits of GIS and P2P, a design method of new information service system -Gippy - is introduced to keep pace with information exchange demands among dispersed governance regions, especially as universities. It is discussed in this paper that Gippy's key achieving technologies including its applications as well as architecture characteristics. We also points out new value-added functions adopted by Gippy, and give a research on feasibility of optimizing and extending. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper provides a metareview of how e-learning content is currently being produced and embedded in the learning practice in further education, work-based learning and community learning contexts. Based upon this metareview, the paper has identified four categories of content production used: (1) learner-authored content, (2) practitioner-authored content, (3) commercial- and public sector-commissioned content and (4) combinations of these categories. The metareview also identifies several well-used, practitioner-based and institutional models for embedding e-learning content into practice, exploring some of the implications of this upon practitioners.

By means of introducing multi-auctioneer model, resources in the computational economic grid can be managed and allocated like in the auction. We research and put forward the corresponding solve schemes of three key issues of auctioneer system: preventing auctioneer from cheating, selection of auctioneer, setting of trading prices, and use computational grid modeling and simulation tools GridSim to simulate computational grid environment in the experiment which uses multiauctioneer system to manage and schedule, then we analyze the results of experiment in different conditions, and validate the feasibility of a multi-auctioneer system in computational grid.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. This paper presents technical foundation, roadmap and initial results of the IDIOM project (information Diffusion across Interactive Online Media). information spreads rapidly across Web sites, Web logs and online forums. IDIOM tracks this process and compares it to direct communication through electronic mail and instant messaging. Linguists define "idiom" as an expression whose meaning is different from the literal meanings of its component words. Similarly, the study of information diffusion promises insights that cannot be inferred from individual network elements. Similar projects often focus on particular media, or neglect important aspects of the human language. IDIOM addresses these gaps to reveal fundamental mechanisms of information diffusion across media with distinct interactive characteristics. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce the condition of distributed computing at present firstly. On this foundation, according to the analysis of particular case of distributed computing network, we implement a distributed network environment of P2P whose bottom layer frame is based on JXTA. It improves issuing method of message based on pipeline decomposition mechanism of task based on usage ratio of processor and distributed mechanism of object based on serialization. We build an improved distributed computing network platform on the platform of Linux and Windows and simulate a distributed computing environment. The simulated experiment proves the feasibility and the validity of the distributed network computing platform that is constructed in this paper

The authors created a Web-based integrated education support system that unified the data in the administrative system and the education system in a university. The purpose of the system was to make the administrative system and education system data that had previously been separated seamless, and to implement seamless access from inside and outside the university while maintaining security. Moreover, the authors emphasized the development of a portal site as a point of contact for the system. As a result of using software packages and existing technology for the other servers and databases, and making a policy of not changing the administrative system at all, the authors were able to create the system in a short period of 5 months. After the system was operational, preparation and review for class could be done at home, and evaluations of reports and final determinations of grades could be done from outside the university. This confirmed that the education system was effective. Finally, the authors looked at the trouble and performance problems that occurred involving local rules in the business department during operation, as well as countermeasures for them. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Using games and simulations for supporting learning

The growing interest in the use of games and simulations to support learning is evidenced in the literature, as well as in recent research projects and initiatives. While a focus upon the users of games and simulations is not well evidenced in the literature, this study aimed to highlight key issues and perceptions that inform and underpin how games and simulations were regarded by learners, tutors and experts using these tools. The paper highlights several key issues at stake in the wider debate about the validity of using games and simulations, including strengths of games to motivate learners, as well as scepticism about its efficacy as a learning tool. However, games and simulations are regarded as tools that may support differentiated learner groups including underserved learners, learners with skills needs (e.g. numeracy and literacy) and informal learners seeking to learn from experiences, as well as supporting collaborative learning practices. Furthermore, the majority of learners and tutors using games and simulations involved in the study did find value in using these tools as part of their wider learning and teaching practices. © 2006 Taylor & Francis.
