Representativeness and Uncertainty in Classificationsystems

The choice of implication as a representation for empirical associations and for deduction as a mode of inference requires a mechanism extraneous to deduction to manage uncertainty associated with inference. Consequently, the interpretation of representations of uncertainty is unclear. Representativeness, or degree of fit, is proposed as an interpretation of degree of belief for classification tasks. The calculation of representativeness depends on the nature of the associations between evidence and conclusions. Patterns of associations are characterized as endorsements of conclusions. We discuss an expert system that uses endorsements to control the search for the most representative conclusion, given evidence.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Third KES Symposium on Agent and Multi-agent systems – Technologies and Applications (KES-AMSTA 2009)––held at Uppsala University in Sweden during June 3-5, 2009. The symposium was organized by Uppsala University, KES International and its Focus Group on Agent and Multi-agent systems. The KES-AMSTA Symposium series is a sub-series of the KES Conference series. Following the successes of the First KES Symposium on Agent and Multi-agent systems – Technologies and Applications (KES-AMSTA 2007), held in Wroclaw, Poland, from May 31 to 1 June 2007––and the Second KES Symposium on Agent and Multi-agent systems – Technologies and Applications (KES-AMSTA 2008) held in Incheon, Korea, March 26-28, 2008––KES-AMSTA 2009 featured keynote talks, oral and poster presentations, and a number of workshops and invited sessions, closely aligned to the themes of the conference. The aim of the symposium was to provide an international forum for scientific - search into the technologies and applications of agent and multi-agent systems. Agent and multi-agent systems are an innovative type of modern software system and have long been recognized as a promising technology for constructing autonomous, c- plex and intelligent systems. A key development in the field of agent and multi-agent systems has been the specification of agent communication languages and formali- tion of ontologies. Agent communication languages are intended to provide standard declarative mechanisms for agents to communicate knowledge and make requests of each other, whereas ontologies are intended for conceptualization of the knowledge domain.

This volume contains the contributions to the Joint German/Austrian Con- rence on Arti?cial Intelligence, KI 2001, which comprises the 24th German and the 9th Austrian Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence. They are divided into the following categories: – 2 contributions by invited speakers of the conference; – 29 accepted technical papers, of which 5 where submitted as application papers and 24 as papers on foundations of AI; – 4 contributions by participants of the industrial day, during which companies working in the ?eld presented their AI applications. After a long period of separate meetings, the German and Austrian Societies ¨ for Arti?cial Intelligence, KI and OGAI, decided to hold a joint conference in Vienna in 2001. The two societies had previously held one joint conference. This took place in Ottstein, a small town in Lower Austria, in 1986. At that time, the rise of expert system technology had also renewed interest in AI in general, with quite some expectations for future advances regarding the use of AI techniques in applications pervading many areas of our daily life. Since then ?fteen years have passed, and we may want to comment, at the beginning of a newcentury, on the progress that has been made in this direction.

The best informal de?nition of the Semantic Web is maybe found in the May 2001Scienti?cAmericanarticle“TheSemanticWeb”(Berners-Leeetal. ),which says“TheSemanticWebisanextensionofthecurrentWebinwhichinformation is given well-de?ned meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. ” People who work on the Semantic Web quite often base their work on the famous “semantic web tower”, a product of Tim Berners-Lee’s inspiring drawing on whiteboards. The lowest level is the level of character representation (Unicode) and the identi?cation of resources on the Web (URIs). The highest level concerns the problem of trusting information on the Web. Somewhere in the middle of the tower is the logic level. It addresses the problem of represe- ing information on the Web in a way so that inference rules can derive implicit information from explicitly stated information. The workshop “Principles and Practices of Semantic Web Reasoning” (PPSWR 2004) addressed problems on this level. It took place in September 2004 as a satellite event of the 20th Int- national Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP) in St. Malo, France. After PPSWR 2003 in Mumbai, India, it was the second workshop in this series. This book contains the articles presented at the workshop.
