Walking while engaging in distracting activities affects our perception of changes happening on the road, leading to exposure to hazardous conditions. This study aimed to evidence that pedestrians who become distracted when absorbed in their smartphones fail to maintain situational awareness. Thirty-six recruited participants performed a psychomotor vigilance task and a wayfinding task designed to simulate a multitasking scenario;meanwhile, an auditory oddball paradigm presented to participants tested their situational awareness of an external stimulus. The experiment was conducted in virtual reality (VR) environment with an omnidirectional treadmill. Participant's behavioral and electroencephalographic (EEG) responses were measured and analyzed using a newly proposed brain network measure, phase locking distance (PLD), to capture multitasking-associated couplings between brain regions. The current study supports the notion that multitasking can lead to diminished behavioral performance and changes in walking patterns. Despite the increased interregional brain connectivity, which may be an adaptive response to heightened cognitive demands, the associated reduction in event-related EEG activity suggests competition for neural resources during multitasking. Moreover, the observed EEG activities could indicate additional information processing capacity limitations and provide evidence of decreased situational awareness during multitasking, thereby increasing susceptibility to potentially hazardous situations. © 2016 IEEE.

Honing is a finishing process used for the inner cylindrical surfaces of engine blocks or liners. The process involves abrasive particles bonded to the surface of a honing head, which come into contact with the inner bore surface, performing an oscillating and rotational motion. These motions follow a specific pattern, allowing for the creation of crosshatch patterns on the inner bore surface, thereby improving dimensional accuracy, form accuracy and reducing surface roughness. Common honing processes are divided into four distinct phases: material removal, crosshatching, finish honing, and plateau honing. Each phase corresponds to specific tasks such as material removal from the bore, creating crosshatch patterns, honing the peaks in the crosshatch, and final surface finishing. In computer numerical control (CNC)-based honing machine, individual control commands are typically used to manage each of these phases separately. The commands are combined according to process requirements to achieve the desired honing results. To enhance the efficiency of the honing process, this study focuses on the hydraulic feed of the abrasive strips on the honing head, specifically examining the automatic continuous switching between finish honing and plateau honing. The research analyzes the honing principles, develops a control algorithm for dual-process automatic switching, and validates the process through machining tests. Compared to single-process control, the proposed algorithm significantly improves processing efficiency. Additionally, this algorithm can be applied to other dual-process automatic switching controls, providing valuable insights for the design of CNC honing systems. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. We propose a novel framework for incorporating unlabeled data into semi-supervised classification problems, where scenarios involving the minimization of either i) adversarially robust or ii) non-robust loss functions have been considered. Notably, we allow the unlabeled samples to deviate slightly (in total variation sense) from the in-domain distribution. The core idea behind our framework is to combine Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) with self-supervised training. As a result, we also leverage efficient polynomial-time algorithms for the training stage. From a theoretical standpoint, we apply our framework on the classification problem of a mixture of two Gaussians in Rd, where in addition to the m independent and labeled samples from the true distribution, a set of n (usually with n m) out of domain and unlabeled samples are given as well. Using only the labeled data, it is known that the generalization error can be bounded by ∝ (d/m)1/2. However, using our method on both isotropic and non-isotropic Gaussian mixture models, one can derive a new set of analytically explicit and non-asymptotic bounds which show substantial improvement on the generalization error compared to ERM. Our results underscore two significant insights: 1) out-of-domain samples, even when unlabeled, can be harnessed to narrow the generalization gap, provided that the true data distribution adheres to a form of the "cluster assumption", and 2) the semi-supervised learning paradigm can be regarded as a special case of our framework when there are no distributional shifts. We validate our claims through experiments conducted on a variety of synthetic and real-world datasets. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) are essential for safeguarding IoT networks against various attacks. Our previously developed ensemble-based IDS model, which combines stacked Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with ANOVA feature selection, achieved a remarkable accuracy of 97.46% and an overfitting value of 0.22% in classifying network attacks. However, deploying this powerful model on resource-constrained devices like Raspberry Pi poses challenges due to limited computational resources. In this paper, we tackle these challenges by converting the original model to TensorFlow Lite (TFLite) and applying quantization techniques to optimize the model size for deployment on a Raspberry Pi 3b+. Our approach significantly reduces the model size by 90.9% while maintaining an impressive accuracy of 96.96%, only a 0.5% reduction from the original model. The optimized model demonstrates efficient performance on the Raspberry Pi, with a loading time of 100.2ms and an inference time of 1.2ms. © 2024 IEEE.
