This paper presents a new approach to the development of a researcher network called Linked OpenScholar using Linked Open Data (LOD) technology. The prototype is developed by extending OpenScholar, an open source application under the Drupal CMS. Using Linked OpenScholar, researchers can manage their own research information and an institute can define application profiles for its researcher metadata based on some parts of VIVO ontology as well as researchers' publications. Metadata conforming to these application profiles will be published as LOD, enhancing the visibility of researcher information and the collaboration among researchers from different institutes. Additionally, the application profile would increase the interoperability, sharing and reuse of research information. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Cloud computing allows Web application owners to host their applications with low operational cost and enables them to scale applications to maintain performance based on traffic load and application resource requirements. However, for multi-tier Web applications, it is difficult to automatically identify the exact location of a bottleneck and scale the appropriate resource tier accordingly because multi-tier applications are complex and bottleneck patterns may be dependent on the specific pattern of workload at any given time. This Ph.D. dissertation aims to explore the possibilities to satisfy response time guarantees for multi-tier applications hosted on clouds using adaptive resource management with minimal hardware profiling and application-centric knowledge.

Bollywood movies have become an important part of South asian culture. Video musical pieces are integral parts of these movies. The growing ease of hosting multimedia contents online is resulting in a huge number of movie video songs available online. A common user usually likes to search a particular music piece, based on different criteria e.g. genre of a video song, or on-screen actor performing on a video song. Such information, in current implementation, is attached manually as a textual caption with the video songs. This textual caption with a video song is highly unreliable, especially when a video song is to be uploaded by an ordinary user, which is usually the case with online video songs. In this paper, we present an automatic approach of detecting the actors vocalizing a video song, who are usually the stars of the movie. Our approach is based on detecting actors faces from different parts of a video song and clustering the faces based on faces similarity. We tested the proposed actors detector on 30 video songs, belonging to different genres. An overall accuracy of 83.34% and 80% has been achieved on first and second main actors, respectively.

We propose a method for early fire detection based on the Lucas-Kanade optical flow algorithm that is able to detect fire in real time in a video stream from a monocular camera. The method works both indoors and in open areas. It detects fire at the beginning of the burning process, enabling an earlier response than would be possible with a conventional fire detector. The method performs background subtraction to identify moving pixels in the scene then filters for colors consistent with fire. Growth rate analysis is applied to the contours identified in the previous step. We further propose the use of a Lucas-Kanade optical flow pyramid in the regions identified in the growth analysis step and analysis of the variance of the optical flow feature points' motion. In an experiment comparing the growth rate method alone with the combination of growth rate and optical flow analysis, we find that the algorithm improves the accuracy of fire detection for early fire alarming and reduce false alarm by solving the fire-like color.

Object recognition is one of the most classic problem in computer vision where several techniques in classification have been proposed. In this work, we investigate a new promising improvement on a classification problem using multiple feature types. We assume that different features are suitable for different objects and the occurrence of particular objects usually relate to each other via particular relations. One possibility of finding such a special connection is to employ the advance of semantic technologies. Here, we investigate a new detection framework capable of detecting composite object instances. Unlike most of the previous works which attempts to detect an individual object as a whole, we aim at identifying its composition using an OWL ontology. To this end, low-level features obtained from an image are converted to ontological assertions, and the semantic reasoning of realization is employed to check the type of objects present in the image.

Question answering systems provide answer to the questions using various question processing techniques and extracts answers from a set of documents. Finding the exact answer is more interesting and useful than getting a list of documents to look through and find the answer manually. Question answering is not same as a traditional document retrieval search engine where a set of relevant documents are returned in response of the query, whereas, in the question answering systems the response of the query is a concise and exact answer to the question. Typically, Question Classification (QC) is the first step in a Question Answering (QA) system. This phase is responsible for finding out the type of the expected answer by pruning out the extra information that is not relevant to extract the answer. Almost all the previous QC algorithms evaluated their work on the basis of a common class hierarchy already defined. The coarse grained classes Location, Entity and Numeric in the existing hierarchy have a fine grained class Other. We present the framework to create new fine grained classes to replace the Other classes. We also discuss the motivation behind the replacement and how the new fine grained classes may support the answer extraction. Additionally, we also present an automatic hierarchy creation method to add new class nodes using WordNet and Noun phrase parsing.

Autonomous target pursuit is an extremely useful technology for surveillance applications. In this paper, we derive and evaluate, in a realistic simulation, a novel tracking algorithm for vision-based pursuit. We assume a simple ground-based surveillance robot equipped with a single monocular camera. For the sensor, we propose the use of a color histogram based region tracker. We integrate models of the robot's kinematics and the target's dynamics with a model of the color region tracking sensor via an extended Kalman filter. Detailed simulation results demonstrate that the tracking algorithm substantially reduces the relative position estimation error introduced by noisy color region tracking. The algorithm thus enables target pursuit based on an extremely noisy but simple and low cost sensor.

Governments around the world are working continuously in order to improve services for their citizens. However, the success of these initiatives is dependent not only on the government support but also on the citizens' willingness to use these services. To implement e-government successfully, it is important to determine the factors related to its adoption. This paper examines the factors influencing adoption of e-government services by the Pakistani citizens. Factors that have been explored in the extant literature present inadequate understanding of the relationship that exists between 'adopter characteristics' and 'behavioral intention' to use e-government services. These inadequacies have been identified through a systematic and thorough review of empirical studies and also by conducting expert reviews from the government officials, software engineers and academic researchers to get their perception according to the context of Pakistan. On the basis of thorough review of literature and expert reviews conducted, an integrated conceptual model is developed and proposed by integrating the influential factors which have been highlighted by the various researchers into a single comprehensive model. In this context, this paper describes and tracks in a fruitful way the factors related to the adoption of e-government services and also proposes conceptual model according to the context of Pakistan. © 2011 IEEE.
