On-demand resource provision is one of the key features of cloud computing, allowing applications to grow or shrink on the basis of dynamic workloads. Thus far, most of the research on leveraging on-demand resource provision has focused on batch style applications for scientific computation or Web-centric applications, especially n-tier e-commerce applications. Very little research, however, has focused on leveraging the benefits of cloud computing for applications with alternative architectures. In this paper, we focus on Back-end Mashup applications that have resource-intensive back ends responsible for continuous collection and analysis of real-time data from external services or applications. We present a working prototype back-end mashup application, BuddyMonitor, that allows users of instant messaging services to monitor and analyze the online presence of their “buddies.” The prototype exploits adaptive allocation of cloud resources to scale gracefully in the presence of rapid increases in workload. We demonstrate the feasibility of the approach in an experimental evaluation with a testbed cloud and a realistic simulation of a large scale external XMPP chat *** conclude that cloud computing with adaptive resource allocation has the potential to increase the usability, stability, and performance of large-scale back-end mashup applications.

A behavioral strategy designed for a humanoid robot for the purpose of obstacle avoidance based on four ultrasonic sensors for the learning behavior and performance is proposed and implemented with an autonomous humanoid robot. A mechanical structure with 4 degrees of freedom is designed so that a small-size humanoid robot named ARSR is able to accomplish three types of walking motion. One experiment is presented to illustrate ow the the proposed bipedal structure lets the ARSR move forward, turn left and turn right. Four ultrasonic sensors are mounted on the ARSR to obtain environmental information and detect obstacles. Based on the information obtained from these sensors, a decision tree method is proposed to decide upon one behavior from three possible types of movement: walk forward, turn left and turn right. An experiment is carried out to show how the robot can autonomously avoid obstacles to effectively arrive at its destination. Based on the mechanic design and development, we will get a good agreement for the learning behavior and performance. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper, a simple path correction and obstacle avoidance method with a bipedal robot for the learning stratification and performance, using an ultrasonic sensor and electronic compass sensor, is proposed. This bipedal robot was comprised using the Lego NXT Intelligent Bricks. The proposed method is implemented on an autonomous humanoid robot (the ARSR). One ultrasonic sensor and one electronic compass sensor are installed on the ARSR to detect environmental information including obstacles, the distance to the obstacle, and the directional angle of the robot. Based on the obtained information, an obstacle avoidance and path correct method is proposed to decide the ARSR's behavior so that it can avoid obstacles and move effectively to the destination area. Obstacle avoidance experiments are carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method and confirm the learning stratification and performance. ©2010 IEEE.

We present a remote authentication scheme that uses biometrics and smart card for its working. The security of our scheme relies on onewayness and collision-resistance of hash functions. We use error control codes to remove noise from biometric readings taken at different times. We provide a detailed security analysis and show that the proposed scheme is able to withstand many commonly known attacks against remote authentication schemes. In addition, the scheme does not store biometric templates on the server and provides mutual authentication between the user and the server. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Many organizations collect large amounts of data to support their business and decision making processes. The data collected from various sources may have data quality problems in it. These kinds of issues become prominent when various databases are integrated. The integrated databases inherit the data quality problems that were present in the source database. The data in the integrated systems need to be cleaned for proper decision making. Cleansing of data is one of the most crucial steps. In this research, focus is on one of the major issue of data cleansing i.e. ¿duplicate record detection¿ which arises when the data is collected from various sources. As a result of this research study, comparison among standard duplicate elimination algorithm (SDE), sorted neighborhood algorithm (SNA), duplicate elimination sorted neighborhood algorithm (DE-SNA), and adaptive duplicate detection algorithm (ADD) is provided. A prototype is also developed which shows that adaptive duplicate detection algorithm is the optimal solution for the problem of duplicate record detection. For approximate matching of data records, string matching algorithms (recursive algorithm with word base and recursive algorithm with character base) have been implemented and it is concluded that the results are much better with recursive algorithm with word base.

The problem considered is that of finding frequent subpaths of a database of paths in a fixed undirected graph. This problem arises in applications such as predicting congestion in network traffic. An algorithm based on Apriori, called AFS, is developed, but with significantly improved efficiency through exploiting the underlying graph structure, which makes AFS feasible for practical input path sizes. It is also proved that a natural generalization of the frequent subpaths problem is not amenable to any solution quicker than Apriori.

In many mobile robotics applications involving exploration of unknown environments, it would be extremely useful to provide human operators with a real-time 3D visualization of the environment the robot is exploring. Although a great deal of progress has been made in the separate fields of photorealistic structure from motion and realtime vision-based robot localization and mapping (SLAM), the ultimate goal of real-time 3D visualization of the environment a robot is exploring has yet to be realized. In this paper, we present a simple and efficient incremental algorithm for 3D modeling amenable to realtime implementation. The algorithm creates a texture-mapped polygonal mesh model of the environment from a monocular video feed or sequence of images. The key to the algorithm's simplicity and efficiency is the use of the isosurface of a coarse 3D occupancy grid that is incrementally updated as new images arrive. The isosurface-based reconstruction provides low metric accuracy but helps to filter measurement noise and allows rapid construction of a 3D visualization. We demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the algorithm by using it to generate an OpenGL model of a real indoor environment.
