The problem considered is that of finding frequent subpaths of a database of paths in a fixed undirected graph. This problem arises in applications such as predicting congestion in network traffic. An algorithm based on Apriori, called AFS, is developed, but with significantly improved efficiency through exploiting the underlying graph structure, which makes AFS feasible for practical input path sizes. It is also proved that a natural generalization of the frequent subpaths problem is not amenable to any solution quicker than Apriori.

In many mobile robotics applications involving exploration of unknown environments, it would be extremely useful to provide human operators with a real-time 3D visualization of the environment the robot is exploring. Although a great deal of progress has been made in the separate fields of photorealistic structure from motion and realtime vision-based robot localization and mapping (SLAM), the ultimate goal of real-time 3D visualization of the environment a robot is exploring has yet to be realized. In this paper, we present a simple and efficient incremental algorithm for 3D modeling amenable to realtime implementation. The algorithm creates a texture-mapped polygonal mesh model of the environment from a monocular video feed or sequence of images. The key to the algorithm's simplicity and efficiency is the use of the isosurface of a coarse 3D occupancy grid that is incrementally updated as new images arrive. The isosurface-based reconstruction provides low metric accuracy but helps to filter measurement noise and allows rapid construction of a 3D visualization. We demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the algorithm by using it to generate an OpenGL model of a real indoor environment.

In this paper, a new iris localization method is presented. An iris recognition system acquires a human eye image, segments the iris region from the rest of the image, normalizes this segmented image and encodes features to get a compact iris template. Performance of all subsequent stages in an iris recognition system is highly dependent on correct detection of pupil-iris and iris-sclera boundaries in the eye images. In this paper, we present one such system which finds pupil boundary using image gray levels but uses edge detection and circular Hough transform to locate iris boundary. We introduce a number of optimizations to traditional Hough transform based methods. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed system is accurate and efficient enough for real life applications.

The scarcity of accessible information mediums for visually impaired people is recognized by many international organizations. The situation is even worse for those students with visual impairment who have integrated themselves into mainstream schools with their sighted peers. Although there are a few online information services available like Braille and digital talking books to serve the needs of visually impaired school students, these information services face a number of restrictions, such as accessing book content with minimal cost of investment, handling the complicated transcribing and brailing task, and respecting the issue of legal distribution. This research aims to develop an application named 'CET Embossing Manager'. With the aid of this software, Electronic Braille producers and consumers can access various types of electronic Braille file formats, view the content of the file, and handle various tasks of embossing. To make the content of the book secured, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) or Rijndael is used to protect the file from modifications made by unauthorized parties and limit the number of republishing. © ACM 2009.

We present a system software architecture for mobile robots such as autonomous vehicles. The system achieves the goals of flexibility, maintainability, testability, and modifiability through a decoupled software architecture based on an asynchronous publish-subscribe mechanism and a blackboard object handling synchronized access to shared data. We report on two implementations using the proposed generic architecture and the POSIX real time API. The first implementation is for an autonomous vehicle using waypoint-based navigation, and the second implementation uses the same high-level modules but replaces the low-level hardware interfaces with a virtual reality simulation. Our experiments and an evaluation indicate that the architecture is suitable for a wide variety of control algorithms and supports the construction of testable, maintainable, and modifiable autonomous robot vehicles at low cost in terms of real-time performance.

We develop a polygonal mesh simplification algorithm using a vertex decimation approach. The novelty in our method lies in (a) a characterization of mesh vertices as hyperbolic or nonhyperbolic based upon their discrete local geometry, (b) the cost function used to select a vertex for decimation, and (c) the heuristics applied to re-triangulate the resulting hole. The algorithm begins by classifying the input mesh vertices as hyperbolic or non-hyperbolic, and then computes a volume cost for each nonhyperbolic vertex, in analogy with spherical volume, to capture the loss of fidelity if that vertex is decimated. Vertices of least volume cost are successively deleted and the resulting hole re-triangulated. Preliminary experiments indicate a performance comparable to that of the best known mesh simplification algorithms.

We present a novel algorithm to segment a 3D surface mesh into visually meaningful regions. Our approach is based on an analysis of the local geometry of vertices. In particular, we begin with a novel characterization of vertices as convex, concave or hyperbolic based upon their discrete local geometry. Hyperbolic and concave vertices are considered potential feature region boundaries. We propose a new region growing technique starting from these boundary vertices leading to a segmentation of the surface that is subsequently simplified by a region-merging method. Experiments indicate that our algorithm segments a broad range of 3D models at a quality comparable to existing algorithms. Its use of methods that belong naturally to discretized surfaces and ease of implementation make it an appealing alternative in various applications.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the run-up of internal solitary waves (ISWs) on steep uniform slopes in a two-layered fluid system with a free surface. A 12 m long wave flume, which incorporated a movable vertical gate for generating ISWs, was used in the experiments. A steep uniform slope was modeled at one end of the flume. In the present study we looked at internal waves with small and large amplitudes using a steep uniform slope (from one of Θ=30, 50, 60, 90, 120, and 130 deg) much longer than those previously published in the literature. Results collected from a wide range of experimental runs show that the run-up height depends on the planar slope, while the breaking depth is only antecedent to the amplitude of an ISW. The overall quantitative agreement with the linear feature aspects of the incident wave amplitude is encouraging. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.
