Although biometrics technology has progressed substantially, its performance is still to be improved for real applications. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of personal identification, when only single sample is registered as template, by integrating multiple hand-based biometrics. To make fusion much easier, the same feature, so called fusion code, and decision level fusion strategy are used. Two fusion cases, face & palmprint and FKP & palmprint were taken as examples to verify the effectiveness. Experimental results show that much better performance than single modal biometrics has been achieved.

Hyperspectral unmixing is a crucial preprocessing step for material classification and recognition. In the last decade, nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) and its extensions have been intensively studied to unmix hyperspectral imagery and recover the material end-members. As an important constraint, sparsity has been modeled making use of L 1 or L 2 regularizers. However, the full additivity constraint of material abundances is often overlooked, hence, limiting the practical efficacy of these methods. In this paper, we extend the NMF algorithm by incorporating the L 1/2 sparsity constraint. The L 1/2 -NMF provides more sparse and accurate results than the other regularizers by considering the end-member additivity constraint explicitly in the optimisation process. Experiments on the synthetic and real hyperspectral data validate the proposed algorithm.

A Gabor wavelet based face recognition algorithm of PSOGabor is introduced in this paper. By using particular Gabor filters in feature extraction on important region of face image, PSOGabor can attain more representative feature information with less processing time. To overcome the drawback of overly dependence on the input parameters in intelligent single particle optimizer (ISPO), an improved algorithm of self-adaptive ISPO (AdpISPO) is proposed in this paper. With no critical parameter required, AdpISPO can achieve higher performance than original algorithms. Experimental results demonstrated that, by employing AdpISPO in Gabor filters' selection, PSOGabor can attain higher recognition rate with less computational time. ©2010 IEEE.

In case of severe lung malfunction (ARDS), conventional artificial ventilation strategies may not be able to maintain physiological gas exchange. In these life threatening situations, extracorporeal gas exchange is one of the last available options to keep the patient alive. Until now, most centers use modified cardiopulmonary bypass devices (heart-lung machines). These devices were designed and built for permanent supervision by a trained perfusionist while in operation. In particular, control and safety concepts are tailored to constant attention of an operator. As this can not be achieved in an intensive care unit, more advanced concepts for control and patient safety are necessary. This paper describes an automation concept for advanced extracorporeal lung assist systems for long term use in the intensive care unit. A main focus will be on the modelling of the gas exchange module (oxygenator) and the derivation of controllers for oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration at the oxygenator output. © 2009 EUCA.

In cases where vital gas exchange can't be provided by the human lung, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy is used as an 'ultima ratio'. Up to now, the operating parameters of this long term therapy are adjusted only heuristically at infrequent and discrete time intervals during the day. In order to provide an individually and continuously adapting therapy, an automatic blood gas controller was developed. This approach allows to preset a specific oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressure at the output of the oxygenator. The automated extracorporeal oxygenation setup then continuously monitors the status of the patient and can trigger an alarm in cases of any abnormal system behavior. Thus, the therapy is improved and the medical staff is relieved in addition. This paper describes the development of the controlled extracorporeal oxygenation system including modeling of the whole system and controller design. First results of in-vitro- and in-vivo-experiments are shown. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

In multicore environment, using multiple threads is a common useful approach to improve application performance. Nevertheless, even in many simple applications, the performance might degrade when the number of threads increases. Users usually impute this phenomenon to the overhead of creation or termination of threads. However, in our observation, the more significant effect is the dispatching of threads. We discuss the problems on using threads, and present a novel User Dispatching Mechanism (UDispatch) that provides controllability in user space to improve application performance. Since user threads cannot directly control system resources, a virtual device is adopted between user space and operating system for portability and efficiency instead of adding new system calls through kernel modification. We also experiment UDispatch through multi-threading multimedia applications. The results show that a skip-line application speeds up to 111.3% and 111.6% on a 4-core machine and an 8-core machine, respectively, and an optimized H.264/AVC decoder speeds up to 18.4% on a 4-core machine. © 2009 IEEE.

Model checking of assembly code is a promising approach to satisfy the demand for verification in nowadays ultra-high reliable embedded systems software. Frequent interaction with its environment, e.g., by sending or reading data over the microcontrollers I/O lines, lies in the nature of embedded systems. Thus, making the long-standing problem of explicit-model checking even worse, namely the state-explosion problem. This paper presents a concept to tackle these difficulties by using a 3-valued logic in the state representation and showing its benefits in terms of state-space savings whenever logic operations are executed by the target microcontroller. To highlight the effectiveness of this approach, termed delayed nondeterminism with look ahead , an embedded program exemplifying typical microcontroller source code is analyzed and the resulting state space sizes are discussed. The introduced abstraction technique is implemented in the MCS-51 simulator component for the [mc]square model checker which is developed by the RWTH Aachen University.

Vehicle platoons are usually modelled as continuous dynamic systems. But the parameters of the embedded controllers require particular adaptation depending on the quality and changes commonly occurring in communication networks. These changes may lead to delays or in extreme cases to loss of information. Hence, these changes trigger the jump from one continuous state to another and may be considered as discrete events arising, in general, spontaneously. In this work, we use the formalism of hybrid automata to carry out a safety analysis of controlled vehicle platoons. We are interested in the safety verification of a platoon of vehicles, which communicate with each other via a wireless network. Our aim is to check, if a collision could take place within the platoon under a predefined control law including mode switches. In this paper, we report on results for the non-switching case and for pre-defined switching times. In addition, using different verification tools for this case study allows for the assessment of the performance of these tools and their limitations.
