Human activity recognition is crucial for tactile internet, virtual reality, and digital-twin applications. Previous works have analyzed machine learning for this purpose but often need to pay more attention to typical challenges when deploying these machine learning models in production. First, data must be transmitted to the network node on which the machine-learning model is running. However, scaling human activity recognition by the number of devices and users puts additional constraints on the available transmission channel. While transmitting less data saves bandwidth, removing redundant information from the data can also benefit machine learning. This paper addresses the problem of transmitting wearable sensor data for human activity recognition. To this end, we analyze the extent to which wearable sensor data can be compressed via sparse coding without sacrificing loss in recognition performance. We empirically illustrate, on various datasets, that only a fraction of sensor information is relevant for human activity recognition.

Deterministic communications are required for industrial environments, yet their realization is a challenging task. Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is intended to enable deterministic communication over inexpensive Ethernet networks. Standardized by the IEEE TSN working group, TSN enables precise control of time synchronization, traffic shaping, reliability enhancements, and network administration to answer the demands of industrial control applications. Subsequently, there is a significant need to enable turnkey research and implementation efforts. However, a current lack of open-sourced testbed implementations to investigate and study the behavior of TSN network devices limits verification to simulation and theoretical models. We introduce a publicly available, flexible, and open-sourced measurement testbed for evaluating TSN in the context of industrial automation applications to address the need to perform real-world measurements. In this contribution, we describe our testbed combining Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and existing open-source tools as a platform for in-depth evaluation of TSN devices. Providing detailed TSN backgrounds, we describe an in-depth performance analysis for our implementation. For a common Tactile Internet scenario, we observe an accuracy of close to 5 ns achievable with our publicly available COTS setup.

Some terrestrial Internet access links provide only low data rates. Internet access via geostationary satellites on the other hand provides data rates of up to 50 Mbit/s, but suffers from high latencies. The combination of low data rate, low latency Internet access (e.g., DSL light) and high data rate, high latency Internet access (e.g., geostationary satellites) can utilize the advantages of both. We discuss multipath communication architectures and scheduling strategies for such heterogeneous link combinations. The solution described in this paper relies on Split TCP and Performance Enhancement Proxies. We implement and evaluate the solution with the network simulator ns-3. A well-established traffic model for loading websites is enhanced with different HTTP variants. The results show that the combination of heterogeneous link types can result in page load times close to as if there was a high data rate, low latency Internet access. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

With Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), the IEEE 802.1 Task Group is extending the Ethernet standard by time-sensitive capabilities to establish a common ground for real-time communication systems via Ethernet. The Time-Sensitive Networking Task Group introduces a time-triggered transmission approach in IEEE 802.1Qbv to enable a deterministic transmission of time-critical network traffic, which requires scheduling strategies. Genetic algorithms are qualified to solve these scheduling problems in Time-Sensitive networks. The difficulty is to design the genetic algorithm to find an optimal or a near-optimal solution for different complex problems taking performance and quality of the schedule into account. The complexity of schedules for TSN depends on the decision space of a network designer comprising the possibility to combine a variable number of network participants, a variable number of TSN flows, as well as assuming fixed or flexible routes for the flows. In this paper, we discuss a design approach for a hybrid genetic algorithm including chromosome representation for the routing and scheduling problems in TSN, the choice of genetic operators, and a neighborhood search to find a near-optimal solution. Additionally, we introduce an approach to compress the resulting schedules. Our evaluations show that the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is able to compete with the well-adapted NEH algorithm in terms of schedule quality, and it outperforms the NEH algorithm regarding the computing time. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

The Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) is envisioned to be a heterogeneous network of artificial and natural units that are connected to the Internet. Hence, it extends the connectivity and control to unconventional domains, such as the human body. A potential use case for IoBNT is the communication from the outside to the inside of the human body. In this scenario, typically the Receiver (RX) inside the human body has limited computational complexity, while the Transmitter (TX) outside has large computational resources. In this paper, we address this scenario and propose a novel Asymmetric Auto-Encoder (AAEC) architecture for end-to-end learning of a Molecular communication (MC) system. It applies a Neural Network (NN) at the TX and a low-complexity slope detector at the RX. We discuss the different layers of the NN-based TX and the corresponding training approach. Moreover, we investigate the explainability of the NN-based TX and show through the use of meta modeling that it can be approximated by a linear model. In addition, we demonstrate that the proposed AAEC resembles an MC system with Zero Forcing (ZF) precoding for low and moderate Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). Finally, through numerical results, we confirmed the aforementioned findings and showed that the proposed AAEC outperforms MC systems with and without ZF precoding, especially in high ISI scenarios.

In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient hybrid precoding design for integrated multicast-unicast millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the simultaneous wireless information and power transform is considered at receivers. We adopt two sparse radio frequency chain antenna structures at the base station (BS), i.e., fully-connected and subarray structures, and design the codebook-based analog precoding according to the different structures. Then, we formulate a joint digital multicast, unicast precoding and power splitting ratio optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, while the maximum transmit power at the BS and minimum harvested energy at receivers are considered. Due to its difficulty to directly solve the formulated problem, we equivalently transform the fractional objective function into a subtractive form one and propose a two-loop iterative algorithm to solve it. For the outer loop, the classic Bi-section iterative algorithm is applied. For the inner loop, we transform the formulated problem into a convex one by successive convex approximation techniques and propose an iterative algorithm to solve it. Meanwhile, to reduce the complexity of the inner loop, we develop a zero forcing (ZF) technique-based low complexity iterative algorithm. Specifically, the ZF technique is applied to cancel the inter-unicast interference and the first order Taylor approximation is used for the convexification of the non-convex constraints in the original problem. Finally, simulation results are provided to compare the performance of the proposed algorithms under different schemes. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The development of communication technologies shows that fiber optics is in the main communication improvement in the last decade. Fiber optics is moved from laboratory to be a reality. Transmission of the data using the light as a signal carrier is a revolutionary improvement in the communication era. However, to enable this technology several obstacles should be addressed, such as achieving the longest distance transmission with less possible bit error rate (BER). One of the solutions was performed by careful selection of the optical modes profiles with the help of the nonlinear electrical equalizer (NLEE) to solve the problem of the mode coupling. This paper investigates on the compensation of different modes profiles in optical communication systems over few-mode fiber (FMF) based on Space Division Multiplexer (SDM) with an electrical non-linear equalizer utilized to equalize nonlinear distortions. The result shows that the LG mode achieved the best transmission distance comparing to the other modes which make it the best option to be used. Basically, the evaluation of the system has been done based on standard evaluation metrics such as BER and Eye Diagram. These results can optimize the data transmission quality.

Industrie 4.0 (I4.0) is the fourth industrial revolution, which will see the digital transformation of manufacturing, through the integration on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Data and Services, and the convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT). With any such transformation, there exists challenges that must first be addressed for a successful outcome. For I4.0, these are interoperability and security, which respectively arise from the interconnection of devices from different manufacturers and/or with different communication protocols;and the interconnection of networks with competing critical and non-critical traffic, and the increased access to initially isolated networks. Mixed-numerology transmission is proposed to support a variety of communication scenarios with diverse requirements. However, as the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) remains as the basic waveform, the peak-to average power ratio (PAPR) problem is still cumbersome. In this paper, based on the iterative clipping and filtering (ICF) and optimization methods, we investigate the PAPR reduction in the mixed-numerology systems. We first illustrate that the direct extension of classical ICF brings about the accumulation of inter-numerology interference (INI) due to the repeated execution. By exploiting the clipping noise rather than the clipped signal, the noise-shaped ICF (NS-ICF) method is then proposed without increasing the INI. Next, we address the in-band distortion minimization problem subject to the PAPR constraint. By reformulation, the resulting model is separable in both the objective function and the constraints, and well suited for the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. The ADMM-based algorithms are then developed to split the original problem into several subproblems which can be easily solved with closed-form solutions. Furthermore, the applications of the proposed PAPR reduction methods combined with filtering and windowing techniques are also shown to be effective. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. This paper presents the validation of a rule-based control strategy trying to maximize the self-consumption of PV-converted power and providing frequency containment reserve power at the same time with a battery energy storage system placed in a residential household with roof-top PV-plant. The single model of a residential household is integrated in a simulation model of a virtual battery energy storage system for providing 1 MW frequency containment reserve power composed of 65 centrally coordinated battery energy storage systems with a local rule-based control strategy. We decided to set up a simulation model to be able to realize a high time-resolution. For its validation we set up an optimization model to compare simulation and optimization results. In conclusion, the comparison shows differences of optimization and simulation, but no inexplicable differences. Thus, the validation underlines the successful modeling of the virtual battery energy storage system.
