Virtual power plants can participate in energy markets. This paper presents the modeling approach used in the current research project SWARM for simulating the frequency containment reserve (FCR) power provision with a virtual mass storage. It participates in the German FCR market since July 2015 and is composed of battery energy storage systems (ESSs), which are in fact installed in households with roof-top PV plants and by this means increase the household's internal PV-converted power consumption and offer FCR power at the same time. The paper investigates the effects of more sever restrictions on FCR power provision as have recently been required by the German TSOs. These restrictions translate to relatively small bounds for the state of charge (SOC) of the batteries and have a significant influence on the household's profitability of installing an ESS.

The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution (QKD) offers the advantages (over discrete-variable systems) of higher secret key rates in metropolitan areas, as well as the use of standard telecom components that can operate at room temperature. An important step in the real-world adoption of continuous-variable QKD is the deployment of field tests over commercial fibers. Here we report two different field tests of a continuous-variable QKD system through commercial fiber networks in Xi’an and Guangzhou over distances of 30.02 km (12.48 dB) and 49.85 km (11.62 dB), respectively. We achieve secure key rates two orders-of-magnitude higher than previous field test demonstrations by employing an efficient calibration model with one-time evaluation. This accomplishment is also realized by developing a fully automatic control system which stabilizes system noise, and by applying a rate-adaptive reconciliation method which maintains high reconciliation efficiency with high success probability in fluctuated environments. HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) adapts the video quality to the current network condition by switching between different quality layers. As HAS was shown to perform better than classical video streaming, it is becoming increasingly popular. Recent research showed that quality switch amplitude and time on layer have an impact on the Quality of Experience (QoE) of HAS. However, those studies focused only on adaptation between two layers so far. This work extends these findings by taking adaptation between three layers into account. Thereby, especially the impact of an intermediate layer on user perceived quality is investigated. Crowdsourcing experiments were conducted in order to collect subjective ratings for adaptation between three layers. The results indicate that the quality of each layer and the time on each layer are important QoE parameters. This encourages the usage of temporal pooling approaches for QoE prediction and QoE-aware traffic management. Therefore, mean pooling of per-frame metrics will be applied and its performance will be validated with the subjective crowdsourcing results.

In this paper we investigate the application of Network Calculus for industrial automation networks to obtain performance bounds (latency, jitter and backlog). In our previous work we identified the modeling of industrial networks as the most challenging aspect since in industry most users do not have detailed knowledge about the traffic load caused by applications. However, exactly this knowledge is indispensable when it comes to modeling the corresponding arrival curves. Thus, we suggest the use of generalized traffic profiles, which are provided by the engineering tool. During the engineering process, the user has to specialize these profiles to meet the application configurations. The engineering tool derives the corresponding arrival curves from the specialized profiles and calculates the performance bounds using Network Calculus. To guarantee that the calculated performance bounds are kept during the runtime of the industrial automation, we must ensure that the real traffic flows do not exceed their engineered arrival curves. We therefore propose the use of shapers at the edge of the network domain. The shaper configurations can be automatically derived from the engineered arrival curves of the flows. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

In contrast to already established tools for health technology assessments, Prospective Health Technology Assessment (ProHTA) uses hybrid simulation techniques to make early predictions about the effects of new healthcare innovations. In such studies, it is necessary to consider problems at high abstraction levels, as well as at detailed microscopic levels. According to the diversity of expected output metrics and the lack of medical evidence, the situation can be compared to other large scale and complex simulation problems. In such cases well-known modeling methods are often not sufficient to use. Therefore, advanced modeling and simulation techniques have to be developed and properly applied. This paper describes a methodical and practical approach of hybrid model creation using the simulation tool AnyLogic. We focus on general modeling aspects and on advanced techniques using a Level-Based Architecture that help to develop large scale hybrid simulation models. An implementation of a stroke therapy use-case and its simulation results will be discussed. Finally, some practical ideas for validation will be outlined, as we experienced during the stroke use-case development. Copyright © 2013 ICST.

The impact of mouth-to-ear delay on Conversational Quality (CQ) has been subject to manyfold research in the field of telecommunications. However, its dependency on Conversational Interactivity (CI) has not been studied explicitly in a quantitative way. To investigate the impact of both delay and CI, we conducted 48 tests with 96 different participants and controlled the interactivity through different tasks, namely natural conversation (flight), proof reading of text (text), and random number verification (rnv). The control of interactivity is proven to be effective and remains stable for delays from 100 ms to 800 ms. The Speaker Alternation Rate (SAR) is used as the metric for interactivity. It is shown to have a significant impact on CQ after 200ms delay and the effect does not alleviate until 800 ms. The hypothesis is proven using both graphical analysis and statistical evaluation based on a linear model and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). © 2012 University of Split.

Interference alignment (IA) has been well recognized as an efficient approach to reduce interference at high signal to noise ratio (SNR). However, it demands global channel state information (CSI) at both transmitters and receivers for precoder design in order to maximize the multiplexing gain. In this paper, we discuss IA with delayed differential CSI feedback for time-correlated multiple input multiple output (MIMO) block fading channels. We consider the impact of distortion caused by channel estimation errors and quantized CSI feedback delay, and thus, find an optimal feedback interval to minimize this distortion, as well as the sum rate performance. Specifically, we derive the minimum differential feedback rate. And with the feedback-channel capacity constraint, we further study the relationship between the average sum rate and the feedback interval. Analytical results are verified by simulations.

We present an integrated approach for flexible playout adaptation for high quality audio transmission over impaired network connections. The key concept of our framework is a continuous measurement of the transmission delay, the delay variation, and packet loss. Based on these measurements, the adaptive playout control employs audio time stretching using audio concealment and frame dropping techniques to keep the low delay requirements. In the literature, playout adaptation techniques have mainly been considered for voice over IP, using silence periods between talkspurts, or for high quality audio transmission over dedicated network links. To the best of our knowledge, our playout algorithm is the first achieving low delay high quality audio streaming over impaired network connections for both music and speech. We used a significant number of network traces to estimate the variation of the network quality in DSL, WLAN, UMTS and GPRS links and to update the parameters of our playout adaptation technique. Experimental results clearly indicate that our system provides very high accuracy for the desired accepted late loss rate and achieves a fast playout adaptation, even for rapidly changing network conditions. © 2011 IEEE.
