Here, we investigate the security of the practical one-way CVQKD and CV-MDI-QKD systems under laser seeding attack. In particular, Eve can inject a suitable light into the laser diodes of the light source modules in the two kinds of practical CVQKD systems, which results in the increased intensity of the generated optical signal. The parameter estimation under the attack shows that the secret key rates of these two schemes may be overestimated, which opens a security loophole for Eve to successfully perform an intercept-resend attack on these systems. To close this loophole, we propose a real-time monitoring scheme to precisely evaluate the secret key rates of these schemes. The analysis results indicate the implementation of the proposed monitoring scheme can effectively resist this potential attack. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Practical security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with reduced optical attenuation

In a practical CVQKD system, the optical attenuator can adjust the Gaussian-modulated coherent states and the local oscillator signal to an optimal value for guaranteeing the security of the system and optimizing the performance of the system. However, the performance of the optical attenuator may deteriorate due to the intentional and unintentional damage of the device. In this paper, we investigate the practical security of a CVQKD system with reduced optical attenuation. We find that the secret key rate of the system may be overestimated based on the investigation of parameter estimation under the effects of reduced optical attenuation. This opens a security loophole for Eve to successfully perform an intercept-resend attack in a practical CVQKD system. To close this loophole, we add an optical fuse at Alice’s output port and design a scheme to monitor the level of optical attenuation in real time, which can make the secret key rate of the system evaluated precisely. The analysis shows that these countermeasures can effectively resist this potential attack. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Integrating machine learning to achieve an automatic parameter prediction for practical continuous-variable quantum key distribution

For supporting practical quantum key distribution (QKD), it is critical to stabilize the physical parameters of signals, e.g., the intensity, phase, and polarization of the laser signals, so that such QKD systems can achieve better performance and practical security. In this paper, an approach is developed by integrating a support vector regression (SVR) model to optimize the performance and practical security of the QKD system. First, a SVR model is learned to precisely predict the time-along evolutions of the physical parameters of signals. Second, such predicted time-along evolutions are employed as feedback to control the QKD system for achieving the optimal performance and practical security. Finally, our proposed approach is exemplified by using the intensity evolution of laser light and a local oscillator pulse in the Gaussian modulated coherent state QKD system. Our experimental results have demonstrated three significant benefits of our SVR-based approach: (1) it can allow the QKD system to achieve optimal performance and practical security, (2) it does not require any additional resources and any real-time monitoring module to support automatic prediction of the time-along evolutions of the physical parameters of signals, and (3) it is applicable to any measurable physical parameter of signals in the practical QKD system.

Microwave frequency upconversion employing a coupling-modulated ring resonator

We present a method to generate a frequency-doubled microwave signal by employing a coupling-modulated ring resonator. Critical coupling is achieved when the resonator intrinsic loss is perfectly balanced by the external coupling enabled by a Mach–Zehnder interferometer coupler. The high suppression of the carrier leads to a clean two-tone optical signal with the frequency interval two times larger than that of the input microwave *** beating of the two-tone signal at a photodiode generates the frequency upconverted microwave signal.A theoretical model is established to analyze the modulation process and the microwave signal *** results show that the electrical harmonic suppression ratio is around ~20 dB(29 dB) for an input microwave signal with 5 dBm(10 dBm) power.

Mixed-numerology transmission is proposed to support a variety of communication scenarios with diverse requirements. However, as the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) remains as the basic waveform, the peak-to average power ratio (PAPR) problem is still cumbersome. In this paper, based on the iterative clipping and filtering (ICF) and optimization methods, we investigate the PAPR reduction in the mixed-numerology systems. We first illustrate that the direct extension of classical ICF brings about the accumulation of inter-numerology interference (INI) due to the repeated execution. By exploiting the clipping noise rather than the clipped signal, the noise-shaped ICF (NS-ICF) method is then proposed without increasing the INI. Next, we address the in-band distortion minimization problem subject to the PAPR constraint. By reformulation, the resulting model is separable in both the objective function and the constraints, and well suited for the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. The ADMM-based algorithms are then developed to split the original problem into several subproblems which can be easily solved with closed-form solutions. Furthermore, the applications of the proposed PAPR reduction methods combined with filtering and windowing techniques are also shown to be effective. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Capitalizing on the recently proposed Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading model, in this letter, we investigate the sum of independent but not identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) Fisher-Snedecor F variates. First, a novel closed-form expression is derived for the moment generating function of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. Based on this, the corresponding probability density function and cumulative distribution function of the sum of i.n.i.d. Fisher-Snedecor F variates are derived, which are subsequently employed in the analysis of multiple branch maximal-ratio combining (MRC). Specifically, we investigate the impact of multipath and shadowed fading on the outage probability and outage capacity of MRC based receivers. In addition, we derive exact closed-form expressions for the average bit error rate of coherent binary modulation schemes followed by an asymptotic analysis which provides further insights into the effect of the system parameters on the overall performance. Importantly, it is shown that the effect of multipath fading on the system performance is more pronounced than that of shadowing. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

When using the image mutual information to assess the quality of reconstructed image in pseudothermal light ghost imaging, a negative exponential behavior with respect to the measurement number is observed. Based on information theory and a few simple and verifiable assumptions, semi-quantitative model of image mutual information under varying measurement numbers is established. It is the Gaussian characteristics of the bucket detector output probability distribution that leads to this negative exponential behavior. Designed experiments verify the model.

Industrie 4.0 (I4.0) is the fourth industrial revolution, which will see the digital transformation of manufacturing, through the integration on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Data and Services, and the convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT). With any such transformation, there exists challenges that must first be addressed for a successful outcome. For I4.0, these are interoperability and security, which respectively arise from the interconnection of devices from different manufacturers and/or with different communication protocols;and the interconnection of networks with competing critical and non-critical traffic, and the increased access to initially isolated networks. This paper presents an overview of standards, such as IEC 62443, the ISO 27000 series, IEC 62541 Open Connectivity Unified Architecture (OPC UA) and Time Sensitive networks (TSN) (IEEE 1722-2016), which addresses these challenges. © 2017 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI).
