On the Performance of X-Duplex Relaying

In this paper, we study an X-duplex relay system with one source, one amplify-and-forward relay, and one destination, where the relay is equipped with a shared antenna and two radio frequency (RF) chains used for transmission or reception. X-duplex relay can adaptively configure the connection between its RF chains and antenna to operate in either half-duplex (HD) or full-duplex (FD) mode, according to the instantaneous channel conditions. We first derive the distribution of the signal to interference plus noise ratio, based on which we then analyze the outage probability, average symbol error rate (SER), and average sum rate. We also investigate the X-duplex relay with power allocation and derive the lower bound and upper bound of the corresponding outage probability. Both analytical and simulated results show that the X-duplex relay achieves a better performance over pure FD and HD schemes in terms of SER, outage probability and average sum rate, and the performance floor caused by the residual self interference can be eliminated using flexible RF chain configurations. © 2017 IEEE.

We demonstrate a 6 Gbps real-time optical quantum random number generator by measuring vacuum fluctuation. To address the common problem that speed gap exists between fast randomness generation and slow randomness extraction in most high-speed real-time quantum random number generator systems, we present an optimized extraction algorithm based on parallel implementation of Toeplitz hashing to reduce the influence of classical noise due to the imperfection of devices. Notably, the real-time rate of randomness extraction we have achieved reaches the highest speed of 12 Gbps by occupying less computing resources and the algorithm has the ability to support hundreds of Gbps randomness extraction. By assuming that the eavesdropper with complete knowledge of the classical noise, our generator has a randomness generation speed of 6.83 Gbps and this supports the generation of 6 Gbps information-theoretically provable quantum random numbers, which are output in real-time through peripheral component interconnect express interface. Privacy amplification is an indispensable step in postprocessing of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), which is used to distill unconditional secure keys from identical corrected keys between two distant legal parties. The processing speed of privacy amplification has a significant effect on the secret key rate of CV-QKD system. We report the high-speed parallel implementation of length-compatible privacy amplification algorithm based on graphic processing unit. Length-compatible algorithm is used to satisfy the security requirement of privacy amplification at different transmission distances when considering finite-size effect. We achieve the speed of privacy amplification over 1 Gbps at arbitrary input length and the speed is one to two orders of magnitude faster than previous demonstrations, which supports high-speed real-time CV-QKD system and ensures the security of privacy amplification. Data-driven air quality characterisation for urban environments: A case study

The economic and social impact of poor air quality in towns and cities is increasingly being recognised, together with the need for effective ways of creating awareness of real-time air quality levels and their impact on human health. With local authority maintained monitoring stations being geographically sparse and the resultant datasets also featuring missing labels, computational data-driven mechanisms are needed to address the data sparsity challenge. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-based method to accurately predict the Air Quality Index (AQI), using environmental monitoring data together with meteorological measurements. To do so, we develop an air quality estimation framework that implements a neural network that is enhanced with a novel Non-linear Autoregressive neural network with exogenous input (NARX), especially designed for time series prediction. The framework is applied to a case study featuring different monitoring sites in London, with comparisons against other standard machine-learning based predictive algorithms showing the feasibility and robust performance of the proposed method for different kinds of areas within an urban region. Empowering power grids with ICT is fundamental for the future power grid. Simulation plays an essential role for evaluating emerging smart grid applications. The presented co-simulation framework SGsim is based on two main simulators, OMNeT++ and Open DSS. With newly added components, smart grid applications in the electricity distribution network can now be investigated and evaluated. Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) is a mechanism to reduce the power demand which eventually will reduce the energy consumption. In a case study, the co-simulation framework is used to explore the potential energy saving by applying a closed-loop CVR inside a residential power grid. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Cooperative localization has emerged as a promising technique which can complement or even replace global positioning systems (GPS) in many practical scenarios, such as GPS-denied environments. In this paper, we concentrate on the distributed cooperative localization design. The conventional distributed cooperative localization approaches usually yield high computational complexity and communication overhead, due to the lack of an efficient link selection mechanism. For this purpose, we propose a novel concept named opportunistic cooperative localization, based on which each agent is able to select the most informative links rather than utilize all the possible links in a distributed, self-organized, and self-optimized manner. To achieve effective opportunistic selection, overlapping coalition formation (OCF) game is employed. In addition, we also provide an optimized terminating criterion, based on which the agents will be able to know whether and when they are well localized, and thus can terminate their localization procedure efficiently. Through simulations, we observe that by virtue of the proposed OCF game based opportunistic cooperative localization scheme along with the provided terminating criterion, the limitations of conventional distributed cooperative localization can be alleviated at the cost of negligible performance degradation. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

It has been recognized that many complex dynamical systems in the real world require a description in terms of multiplex networks, where a set of common, mutually connected nodes belong to distinct network layers and play a different role in each layer. In spite of recent progress towards data based inference of single-layer networks, to reconstruct complex systems with a multiplex structure remains largely open. We articulate a mean-field based maximum likelihood estimation framework to solve this outstanding and challenging problem. We demonstrate the power of the reconstruction framework and characterize its performance using binary time series from a class of prototypical duplex network systems that host two distinct types of spreading dynamics. In addition to validating the framework using synthetic and real-world multiplex networks, we carry out a detailed analysis to elucidate the impacts of structural and dynamical parameters as well as noise on the reconstruction accuracy and robustness.
