The Internet serves as ubiquitous, prompt source of information in our society. Due to the giant amount of information, the access to the information relies on information processing mechanisms as implemented in search engines, product recommendation systems, or online social networks. As a result of the engineered preprocessing mechanism, the retrieved information is biased and does not represent a neutral view on the available information, while end-users often are not aware of this bias. In this article, we define the term "Information Neutrality", review current principles of information processing in the Internet and discuss influence factors hindering Information Neutrality as well as appropriate countermeasures. The main contribution of this article is to raise the awareness of Information Neutrality as an emerging key challenge in the Internet and to potentially consider Information Neutrality as a factor in the value-sensitive design of Internet-based services.

FlowTrace： measuring round-trip time and tracing path in software-defined networking with low communication overhead

：In today＇s networks, load balancing and priority queues in switches are used to support various quality-of-service （QoS） features and provide preferential treatment to certain types of traffic. Traditionally, network operators use ‘traceroute＇ and ‘ping＇ to troubleshoot load balancing and QoS problems. However, these tools are not supported by the common OpenFlow-based switches in software-defined networking （SDN）. In addition, traceroute and ping have potential problems. Because load balancing mechanisms balance flows to different paths, it is impossible for these tools to send a single type of probe packet to find the forwarding paths of flows and measure latencies. Therefore, tracing flows＇ real forwarding paths is needed before measuring their latencies, and path tracing and latency measurement should be jointly considered. To this end, FlowTrace is proposed to find arbitrary flow paths and measure flow latencies in OpenFlow networks. FlowTrace collects all flow entries and calculates flow paths according to the collected flow entries. However, polling flow entries from switches will induce high overhead in the control plane of SDN. Therefore, a passive flow table collecting method with zero control plane overhead is proposed to address this problem. After finding flows＇ real forwarding paths, FlowTrace uses a new measurement method to measure the latencies of different flows. Results of experiments conducted in Mininet indicate that FlowTrace can correctly find flow paths and accurately measure the latencies of flows in different priority classes.

Objective: This study provides an objective measure based on actigraphy for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis in children. We search for motor activity features that could allow further investigation into their association with other neurophysiological disordered traits. Methods: The study involved n = 29 (48 eligible) male participants aged 9.89 ± 0.92 years (8 controls, and 7 in each group: ADHD combined subtype, ADHD hyperactive-impulsive subtype, and autism spectrum disorder, ASD) wearing a wristwatch actigraph continuously for a week (9% losses in daily records) in two acquisition modes. We analyzed 47 quantities: from sleep duration or movement intensity to theory-driven scaling exponents or non-linear prediction errors of both diurnal and nocturnal activity. We used them in supervised classification to obtain cross-validated diagnostic performance. Results: We report the best performing measures, including a nearest neighbors 4-feature classifier providing 69.4 ± 1.6% accuracy, 78.0 ± 2.2% sensitivity and 60.8 ± 2.6% specificity in a binary ADHD vs control classification and 46.5 ± 1.1% accuracy (against 25% baseline), 61.8 ± 1.4% sensitivity and 79.30 ± 0.43% specificity in 4-class task (two ADHD subtypes, ASD, and control). The most informative feature is skewness of the shape of Zero Crossing Mode (ZCM) activity. Mean and standard deviation of nocturnal activity are among the least informative. Conclusions: Actigraphy causes only minor discomfort to the subjects and is inexpensive. The range of existing mathematical and machine learning tools also allow it to be a useful add-on test for ADHD or differential diagnosis between ADHD subtypes. We demonstrate an 852-nm external cavity diode laser（ECDL） system whose wavelength is mainly determined by an interference filter instead of other wavelength selective elements. The Lorentzian linewidth measured by the heterodyne beating between two identical lasers is 28.3 k Hz. Moreover, we test the application of the ECDL in the Faraday atomic *** saturated absorption spectrum, the transmission spectrum of the Faraday atomic filter at 852 nm is measured by using the ECDL. This interference filter ECDL method can also be extended to other wavelengths and widen the application range of diode laser.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication has been recognized as a promising technique to offload the traffic for the evolved Node B (eNB). However, D2D transmission as an underlay causes severe interference to both the cellular and other D2D links, which imposes a great technical challenge to radio resource allocation. Conventional graph based resource allocation methods typically consider the interference between two user equipments (UEs), but they cannot model the interference from multiple UEs to completely characterize the interference. In this paper, we study channel allocation using hypergraph theory to coordinate the interference between D2D pairs and cellular UEs, where an arbitrary number of D2D pairs are allowed to share the uplink channels with the cellular UEs. Hypergraph coloring is used to model the cumulative interference from multiple D2D pairs, and thus, eliminate the mutual interference. Simulation results show that the system capacity is significantly improved using the proposed hypergraph method in comparison to the conventional graph based one. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Towards visible soliton microcomb generation

Frequency combs have applications that extend from the ultra-violet into the mid-infrared bands. Microcombs, a miniature and often semiconductor-chip-based device, can potentially access most of these applications, but are currently more limited in spectral reach. Here, we demonstrate mode-locked silica microcombs with emission near the edge of the visible spectrum. By using both geometrical and modehybridization dispersion control, devices are engineered for soliton generation while also maintaining optical Q factors as high as 80 million. Electronics-bandwidth-compatible (20 GHz) soliton mode locking is achieved with low pumping powers (parametric oscillation threshold powers as low as 5.4 mW). These are the shortest wavelength soliton microcombs demonstrated to date and could be used in miniature optical clocks. The results should also extend to visible and potentially ultra-violet bands. Next generation use-cases of wireless IP networks, including especially the Massive Machine Type communications and IoT applications for the distribution of sensory and similar data will require the capability to handle large number of connections while maintaining a low-power footprint in order to function efficiently during long-term deployments. The reduction of the packetisation overhead resulting from the adaptation of header compression could potentially decrease the battery usage of network heavy applications via diminished wireless interface activity. Normally header compression is employed to minimise the overhead of IP-based cellular traffic between two connected peers. This paper presents for the first time comparative power consumption measurements for Robust Header Compression version 2 (RoHCv2) using WiFi and LTE. We find that the adoption of header compression on modern mobile devices will generally not result in increased power consumption based on the extra complexity added by the execution of the algorithms. We also show that the usage of RoHCv2 can potentially even decrease the battery drain on average by about 0.05 W when payloads are small.

More and more car manufactures are combining a normal combustion engine and an electric motor to satisfy the standards for CO2 emissions. In order to take advantage of this technology in the most efficient way, for example in companies car fleets, realistic simulation models are required. In this paper, we present an accurate yet computationally inexpensive energy demand model for the microscopic simulation of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Our model mostly consists of a combustion engine, an electric motor and, most importantly, a realistic engine management model. Furthermore, a pragmatic kinematic model as well as a model for recuperation of energy while breaking are provided. Modularly designed, our simulation model allows for simple replacement and adjustment of each module. As input values, our model only requires the vehicle's speed and a set of constant predefined parameters. Consequently, this also enables the model to be easily connected with current sophisticated traffic simulators. We show the correctness of our model regarding the consumption of fuel and electric energy using comprehensive real-world experiments.
