Modern cellular networks utilising the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) set of standards face an ever-increasing demand for mobile data from connected devices. Header compression is employed to minimise the overhead for IP-based cellular network traffic. In this paper, we evaluate the three header compression implementations used by such networks with respect to their potential throughput increase and complexity for different mobile service scenarios. We compare RTP, UDP and TCP profile compressions regarding their compression gain and complexity. Specifically, we consider header compression as defined by (i) IP Header Compression (RFC 2507), (ii) Robust Header Compression version 1 (RFC 3095), and (iii) the recently updated Robust Header Compression version 2 (RFC 5225) with TCP/IP profile (RFC 6846).This paper presents the performance evaluation of these header compression schemes for UDP, RTP and TCP, for both IPv4 and IPv6 streams in error-free and error-prone scenarios. A comparison between the Robust Header Compression methods and IP Header Compression is also provided. Our results show that all implementations have great potential for saving bandwidth in IP-based wireless networks, even under varying channel conditions. We also present for the first time an analysis of certain RTP header fields which, depending on the transmission characteristics, could have high impact on the overall compression gain. © 2016, Technical University of Budapest. Recently, cellular networks have become severely overloaded by social-based services, such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, in which thousands of clients subscribe to a common content provider (e.g., a popular singer) and download his/her content updates all the time. Offloading such traffic through complementary networks, such as a delay tolerant network formed by device-to-device (D2D) communications between mobile subscribers, is a promising solution to reduce the cellular burdens. In the existing solutions, mobile users are assumed to be volunteers who selflessly deliver the content to every other user in proximity while moving. However, practical users are selfish and they will evaluate their individual payoffs in the D2D sharing process, which may highly influence the network performance compared to the case of selfless users. In this paper, we take user selfishness into consideration and propose a network formation game to capture the dynamic characteristics of selfish behaviors. In the proposed game, we provide the utility function of each user and specify the conditions under which the subscribers are guaranteed to converge to a stable network. Then, we propose a practical network formation algorithm in which the users can decide their D2D sharing strategies based on their historical records. Simulation results show that user selfishness can highly degrade the efficiency of data offloading, compared with ideal volunteer users. Also, the decrease caused by user selfishness can be highly affected by the cost ratio between the cellular transmission and D2D transmission, the access delays, and mobility patterns. © 2015 IEEE.

This work investigates the use of reconfigurable devices as computing platform for self-organizing embedded systems. Those usually consist of a set of distributed, autonomous nodes interacting with each other in order to solve a given problem. Several aspects of hardware-software co-design as well as partial reconfiguration are presented in order to enforce adaptivity of a node. One targeted application field for this kind of system are sensor networks in which reconfigurable devices, in this case FPGAs, can be used as computation nodes to provide services that require more computation power. To manage the available hardware resources as a whole we suggest a market-economy-like system of supply and demand. While we have all been warned about viruses attacking our computers and hackers stealing our private information, very few of us realize the similar threat to our phones. With the number of smartphones in use growing each day, we now find ourselves to be a society equipped with devices packed with personal information and small enough to be easily stolen or misplaced. Millions of smartphone users are reporting unauthenticated behavior on their phones, yet many refuse to use passcode protection. Our goal is to use information gathered from the phone, specifically app usage statistics, in order to determine if a user is the actual owner of the smartphone. For this project, we created an app that could record a variety of information from smartphones and their sensors and make simple decisions about whether the person using the phone was the actual owner and lock itself accordingly. Because of time constraints, we looked at data sets from Glasgow Caledonian University and LiveLab at Rice University rather than collecting our own data. We used the LIBSVM library to create two-class SVM models for each of the 34 users in the LiveLab datasets. We then constructed testing datasets of both owner and non-owner data and tested the accuracy of the models. Accuracy rates for all 34 users were for the most part over 85%, and while false positive (identifying the owner as non-owner) rates were sometimes high, these false positive diagnoses would not compromise the security of the phone.

Considering the strong inhomogeneous spatial polarization and intensity distribution of spontaneous decay fluorescence due to the Hanle effect, we propose and demonstrate a universe Hanle detection configuration of electron-shelving method for optical clocks. Experimental results from Ca atomic beam optical frequency standard with electron-shelving method show that a designed Hanle detection geometry with optimized magnetic field direction, detection laser beam propagation and polarization direction, and detector position can improve the fluorescence collection rate by more than one order of magnitude comparing with that of inefficient geometry. With the fixed 423 nm fluorescence, the improved 657 nm optical frequency standard signal intensity is presented. The potential application of the Hanle detection geometry designed for facilitating the fluorescence collection for optical lattice clock with a limited solid angle of the fluorescence collection has been discussed. The Hanle detection geometry is also effective for ion detection in ion optical clock and quantum information experiments. Besides, a cylinder fluorescence collection structure is designed to increase the solid angle of the fluorescence collection in Ca atomic beam optical frequency standard. © 2015 Xiaogang Zhang et al.

Recently, the development in full-duplex communications has offered a great opportunity to perform simultaneous spectrum sensing and spectrum access in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we consider a cognitive cellular network, in which the secondary base station (SBS) is a full-duplex device that can simultaneously sense the primary spectrum and transmit to the secondary users. We show that the power allocation of the SBS can affect both the sensing performance and the transmission capacity, and thus, we jointly consider the power allocation problem in the spectrum management process. First, we formulate the considered problem as a 3-dimensional matching problem and prove its NP-hardness. Then, we propose an approximate solution by extending a 2-dimensional matching algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can highly increase the secondary throughput of the SBS, compared with the greedy algorithm and the random algorithm.

We study the ability of Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) solutions to handle real-time requirements in safety scenarios using beaconing as a communication primitive. One of the envisioned safety applications is intersection assistance. The objective of such applications is to either warn the driver or even to act autonomously if other approaching vehicles endanger the vehicle. Fairness, combined with aggressive channel access for low-latency safety messages, has been one of the main research line according to which state of the art congestion control mechanisms have been developed. We show that these solutions are not able to sufficiently support intersection assistance applications. Specifically, we show that current approaches fail exactly due to their fairness postulation. We propose a new situation-aware solution to this fairness dilemma by allowing temporary exceptions for vehicles in dangerous situations. We show the applicability for two state of the art congestion control mechanisms, namely ETSI Transmit Rate Control (TRC) and Dynamic Beaconing (DynB). Our investigation also reveals important research objectives for future IVC protocols, namely how much reactivity and situation-awareness is needed in the highly dynamic environment of vehicular networks. © 2014 IEEE.

Activity patterns of neural population are constrained by underlying biological mechanisms. These patterns are characterized not only by individual activity rates and pairwise correlations but also by statistical dependencies among groups of neurons larger than two, known as higher-order interactions (HOIs). While HOIs are ubiquitous in neural activity, primary characteristics of HOIs remain unknown. Here, we report that simultaneous silence (SS) of neurons concisely summarizes neural HOIs. Spontaneously active neurons in cultured hippocampal slices express SS that is more frequent than predicted by their individual activity rates and pairwise correlations. The SS explains structured HOIs seen in the data, namely, alternating signs at successive interaction orders. Inhibitory neurons are necessary to maintain significant SS. The structured HOIs predicted by SS were observed in a simple neural population model characterized by spiking nonlinearity and correlated input. These results suggest that SS is a ubiquitous feature of HOIs that constrain neural activity patterns and can influence information processing.
