Modern cars comprise a multitude of electronic features which are implemented in tens of communicating control units. To connect these in-car embedded systems, the CAN bus offers a sustainable performance, hence it is used as a widespread communication infrastructure, even for safety critical applications. However, CAN media access is priority based and performed competitive and non-preemptive. Thus, assessing the worst case end-to-end delay is inevitable in order to provide safe and efficient operation of functions with hard real-time properties. In this paper, we use the analytical method of network calculus to determine guaranteed upper bounds for transmission delays of all CAN priorities. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach by investigating current real-life CAN communication data from the German car manufacturer Audi.

Modern cars comprise various driver assistance applications which depend on reliable surveillance of the vehiclepsilas environment. Therefore, sensors known from aviation and military - like radar or laser - are combined to multi-sensor systems and employed to provide specific observation data. The actual choice of the single sensors depends on the scope of the application and in turn has a considerable impact on the overall system performance. We investigate multi-sensor systems composed of different sensor technologies and provide a methodical framework for the design of sensor based applications and the evaluation of a multi-sensor system regarding specific application requirements. We use both sensor and application characteristics to model the system and propose a metric that supports basic design decisions and assessment of alternative sensor systems at an early stage of system development. The presented approach is very flexible and could be used for any application that relies on multi-sensor systems.

Automatic single view-based 3-D face synthesis for unsupervised multimedia applications

Various 3-D face synthesis techniques have been proposed and extensively used in many applications. Compared with others, single view-based face synthesis technology allows unsupervised 3-D face reconstruction without any offline operations. Although many algorithms have been published, automatic and robust single view-based 3-D face synthesis still remains unsolved. In contrast to other methods, the single view-based 3-D face synthesis algorithm conducted in this paper enables automated 3-D face synthesis from an arbitrary head-and-shoulder image with the complex background. The developed system first detects the face using Bayesian skin-tone classification based on only the chrominance component, Cr. Based on the detected face, a few salient facial features, such as the corners of the eyebrows and contours of the eyes, mouth, and chin are in turn extracted using variant algorithms, including a dynamic chin extraction mechanism that will be detailed in this paper. Then, face model adaptation consisting of both global and local adaptations is imposed, according to geometric information provided by the extracted facial features. Finally, the 3-D specific face is synthesized using the adapted 3-D face model with a texture map directly derived from the input face image, followed by the implementation of facial animation using this synthesized face. Future WDM optical networks are foreseen to be more dynamic and sensitive to failures. Therefore, dynamic service provisioning with network survivability becomes a critical requirement for network planning and management. The concept of protected working capacity envelope (PWCE) is attractive because it does not need protection resources to be dynamically configured thereby simplifying network management and reducing processing overheads. In this paper, we consider a p-Cycle-based Strategy for adaptive PWCE (protected working capacity envelope) design where PWCE can adaptively change with dynamically changing traffic. The blocking performance of this new strategy is compared to that of p-Cycle-based PWCE under a dynamic and non-uniform traffic model. The results show that the new strategy can adapt well to dynamic traffic demands that are non-uniform among the network nodes. © 2008 SPIE.

Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of the next generation optical network is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. Existing work addresses contention resolution mostly in the wavelength domain (as wavelength conversion, WC), the time domain (buffering by using fiber delay lines, FDLs, the space domain (as deflection routing), and the burst domain (as segmentation). In this paper, a new architecture of optical networks-the server view based on optical networks is proposed. From the point of this new architecture, the network can be modeled as a server system with three type servers-the access server, the node server and the link server. The network performances such as cost, energy consume and network capacity can be affected by the capability of these three type servers. Unlike existing research activities that are focused on the node server design, we present the Dual fiber link (the link server solution) and IP calking evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, computer simulations are conducted. The simulation results show these solutions can reduce the contention effectively with existing commercial devices. © 2008 SPIE.

Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of optical packet-switched networks is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of the network. Therefore, most of the research activities are focus on the node design. Unlike the existing research activities are focus on the node design, we proposed a new concept-server vision for optical packet-switched networks in this paper. From the point of view of server vision, the network resource is categorized into three types-the access server, the node server and the link server, based on the fact that the network resource performs the different function for the traffic. After present the server vision optical network, we presented two novel approaches-two link server solutions-to erase the resource contention. One solution is the packet calking, and the other solution is the dual-fiber link. We have developed some scenarios to validate these solutions. Simulation results show that the dual-fiber link can reduce the contention in terms of orders of magnitude in optical packetswitched networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions. As a widespread automotive network, CAN (Controller Area Network) buses are deployed in modern cars to fulfill the demands of more than 90 collaborating electronic control devices. For safety critical applications, fast and reliable data transfer is indispensable, since often hard real-time transmission deadlines have to be met to assure a safe operation of the vehicle. Therefore, deterministic performance evaluation methods are inevitable for the validation of systems that must guarantee hard delay bounds and timeliness of information processing. One recent deterministic modeling approach is Network Calculus, which allows to determine worst case transmission times. Based on real-world communication CAN bus data, we generate appropriate modeling elements for the Network Calculus as arrival and service curves that reflect all priorities of CAN traffic. While the highest priority traffic on a CAN bus is known to have real-time properties, the results of this paper provide closed and easily applicable formulas to determine delay bounds of messages on all priority levels.

The application of environment sensor systems in modern - often called ldquointelligentrdquo - cars is regarded as a promising instrument for increasing road traffic safety. Based on a context perception enabled by well-known technologies such as radar, laser or video, these cars are able to detect threats on the road, anticipate emerging dangerous driving situations and take proactive actions for collision avoidance. Besides the combination of sensors towards an automotive multi-sensor system, complex signal processing and sensor data fusion strategies are of remarkable importance for the availability and robustness of the overall system. In this paper, we consider data fusion approaches on near-raw sensor data (low-level) and on pre-processed measuring points (high-level). We model sensor phenomena, road traffic scenarios, data fusion paradigms and signal processing algorithms and investigate the impact of combining sensor data on different levels of abstraction on the performance of the multi-sensor system by means of discrete event simulation.

As opposed to representing a document as a "bag of words" in most information retrieval applications, we propose a model of representing a web page as sets of named entities of multiple types. Specifically, four types of named entities are extracted, namely person, geographic location, organization, and time. Moreover, the relations among these entities are also extracted, weighted, classified and marked by labels. On top of this model, some interesting applications are demonstrated. In particular, we introduce a notion of person-activity, which contains four different elements: person, location, time and activity. With this notion and based on a reasonably large set of web pages, we are able to show how one person's activities can be attributed by time and location, which gives a good idea of the mobility of the person under question.
