Modularization of fuzzy relational equations

In this study, we are concerned with a modularization of fuzzy relational equations that is converting a highly dimensional (multivariable) relational equation into a series of single input fuzzy relational equations. The problem originates from a need of handling (estimating) highly dimensional relational structures and is inherently associated with the curse of dimensionality present in relational fuzzy models. We propose a two-layer architecture and discuss a detailed optimization scheme leading to the determination of the fuzzy relations occurring there. Illustrative numerical studies are also included.

In addition to the integration of vehicles into traditional networks (e.g. access to the Internet via cellular) the Ad-hoc connection of vehicles within a limited area is a technology that promises a lot of innovative and exciting services. This paper starts with the description of some services to motivate Ad-hoc networking in the vehicular environment. It then gives an overview of the current challenges (especially routing protocols) in this field. If the geographic position of the network nodes is known, better performance can be achieved with the utilization of so called geocast routing-algorithms. An overview of geocast-routing is given and shortcomings of the existing protocols for the usage in inter-vehicle Ad-hoc networks are explained. Finally we make a proposal for a vehicle-optimized geocast routing, protocol that is based on AODV and present our prototype implementation.

In this paper, an, analysis of test time by CBET (which is an acronym for Combination of BIST and External Test) test approach is presented. The analysis validates that CBET test approach can achieve shorter testing time than both external test and BIST in many situations. An efficient test time minimization algorithm for CBET-based LSIs is also proposed. It uses several characteristics of CBET test approach derived by the analysis to reduce computation time to find the optimum test sets. The algorithm helps designers to save their precious design time. © 2000 IEEE.

There are many obstacles to prevent the timely development of competitive new products. Virtual Reality(VR) is a potential technology to improve this situation significantly. A synthetic 3D virtual environment(VE) can be organized to enable both cfevelopers and customers to collaborate on the designing, prototyping, testing, evaluation, and production of new products. The introduction of the VE reduces time and cost required for development, enabling manufacturers to evaluate new products from the customer's viewpoint and get quick feedback from customers. We are developing a prototype system, taigeted at creating new fireworks in a VE Hie puipose is to investigate the fundamental issues in constructing a 3D VE and explore methods to apply the VE technologies to product development, through this prototype implementation and evaluation. In this paper, first we describe our research goals with a system model to show that a fireworks creation process implies many fundamental themes argumentedo ver the VE technologies. Tlien we discuss the prototype system overview, implementation details of parallel simulation and rendering, some obsei-vations acquired from initial experiments, and conclusions with future directions. © 2000 Association for Computing Machinery. Pond received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1983 and 1990 respectively. Dr. Pond is currently a scientist at Hughes Space and Communications Company having joined in 1980. He has worked in the fields of communication system design mobile communication network and spacecraft payload design. He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. Dr. Li is very active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) having been a member of the Computer Communications Technical Committee since 1983 and having served as Chairman from 1987–1989. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.

Method for distance estimation of single‐phase‐to‐ground faults in electrical distribution networks with an isolated or compensated neutral

The paper discusses how current and voltage measurements derived from the substation can be used for single‐phase‐to‐ground fault location in medium‐voltage distribution lines. The networks considered are assumed to be radially operated with either an isolated or compensated neutral. In these networks the fundamental frequency ground fault currents usually are so small that no reasonable fault‐distance estimate can be based on them. A possible solution is the utilisation of ground‐fault initial transients. In this paper a method for ground‐fault distance estimation, based on the least squares estimation of transient parameters, is presented. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An artificial‐neural‐network (ANN) application for steady‐state security evaluation of electrical power systems is presented. Such application is based upon a combined use of a multilayer back‐propagation neural network and of an opportune electrical system model, previously proposed by some of the authors. In the paper, the definition of steady‐state security and the problems arising from its on‐line evaluation are briefly recalled. Then, the ANN utilized is described with particular reference to the solutions adopted by the authors. Afterwards, some remarks on the system model utilized are reported. Finally, numerical applications on the AEP‐14 bus system are presented and the results obtained with different ANN configurations are analyzed. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The use of communication satellites as a possible way of offering broadband island interconnectivity appears to be a very attractive option, as it will enable the provision of an all-digital, transparent service to a number of ATM islands spanning a wide area, accommodating efficiently a variety of traffic demands. The CATALYST Project (RACE II/R2074) is an attempt to demonstrate the applicability and compatibility of satellite technology with the terrestrial BISDN. In this paper we present an overview of the project and focus on an initial study of the expected user performance through the CATALYST network. Our analysis is based upon mathematical and simulation models and describes the end-system to end-system transfer delay for given message lengths. The protocol profiles assume a mix of Novell NetWare and Network File System client/server architectures, which are supported by either the IEEE 802.3/Ethernet or fibre distributed data interface LANs, which are themselves linked via LAN/ATM/satellite interface units. Areas of further investigation, and the implication of our analysis on the actual network architecture, are discussed.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.
