The fast adoption of IP-based communications for hand-held devices equipped with wireless interfaces is creating new challenges for the Internet evolution. Users expect flexible access to Internet based services, including not only traditional data services but also multimedia applications. This generates a new challenge for Qos provision, as it will have to deal with fast mobility of terminals being independent of the technology of the access network. various Qos architectures have been defined, but none provides full support for guaranteed service levels for mobile hosts. This paper discusses the problems related to providing Qos to mobile hosts and identifies the existing solutions and future work needed. © springer-verlag berlin Heidelberg 2001.

The semantic framework for the modal logic of knowledge due to Halpern and Moses provides a way to ascribe knowledge to agents in distributed and multiagent systems. In this paper we study two special cases of this framework: full systems and hypercubes. both model static situations in which no agent has any information about another agent's state. Full systems and hypercubes are an appropriate model for the initial configurations of many systems of interest. We establish a correspondence between full systems and hypercube systems and certain classes of Kripke frames. We show that these classes of systems correspond to the same logic. Moreover, this logic is also the same as that generated by the larger class of weakly directed frames. We provide a sound and complete axiomatization, s5WDn, of this logic, and study its computational complexity. Finally, we show that under certain natural assumptions, in a model where knowledge evolves over time, s5WDn characterises the properties of knowledge not just at the initial configuration, but also at all later configurations. In particular, this holds for homogeneous broadcast systems, which capture settings in which agents are initially ignorant of each others local states, operate synchronously, have perfect recall, and can communicate only by broadcasting. © 2000, ACM. The realization of new distributed and heterogeneous software applications is a challenge that software engineers have to face. Logic programming and multi-agent systems can play a very effective role in the rapid prototyping of new software products. This paper proposes a general approach to the prototyping of complex and distributed applications modelled as multi-agent systems and outlines the autonomous research experiences of different research groups from which the approach originates. All the experiences have logic programming as the common foundation and deal with different aspects of the problem: integration of heterogeneous data and reasoning systems, animation of formal specifications and the development of agent-based software. The final goal is joining these diverse experiences into a unique open framework. © 1999 IEEE.

An interactive color image segmentation technique is presented for use in applications where the segmented regions correspond to meaningful objects, such as for image retrieval. The proposed technique utilizes the perceptual HsI (hue,saturation,intensity) color space. The scheme incorporates user interaction so that the best possible results can be achieved. Interaction with the user allows the segmentation algorithm to start efficiently and to refine the results. Interaction is performed for the key images (usually the first image or those where new ojects enter the scene) of the video-telephony sequence. The user is allowed to identify on the screen the relevant regions by marking their seeds. The user guidance can be given by the sender, by the receiver, or by both. The effectiveness of the algorithm is found to be much improved over techniques used in the past. © springer-verlag berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Retrieving images in a database based on user specified colors is a popular low-level retrieval technique. However, the available systems today do not easily allow for a user or a specified query to tag certain colors as unwanted in the query result to ultimately be excluded in the query. specifically, color histogram techniques do not allow for a direct approach to excluding colors and would require a separate query stage to filter out images containing unwanted colors. In this paper we present our vector-based scheme to image retrieval using a multidimensional query space which naturally accepts the exclusion of specified colors in the overall similarity measure. © springer-verlag berlin Heidelberg 1999.

In this paper, we propose a new radar tracking algorithm based on the Gaussian sum filter. To alleviate the computational burden associated with the Gaussian sum filter, we have developed a new systematic and efficient way to approximate a non-Gaussian and measurement-dependent function by a weighted sum of Gaussian density functions and we have also suggested a way to alleviate the growing memory problem inherited in the Gaussian sum filter. Our method is compared with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the converted measurement Kalman filter (CMKF) and it is shown to be more accurate in term of position and velocity errors.

His experience also includes applications of optimization fuzzy logic neural network and genetic algorithm methods to engineering system design Mr. William Schmidt:co-founded Angle Incorporated in 1990 and has served as Vice PresidentlChiefScientist during this tame. He holds a B.Sc. in Applied Science from the Naval Acadt?my and an M.Sc. in Physics from the Naval Post Graduate School. ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

作者： Parker, Lv Ranney, TA Louise V. Parker is a research physical scientist at the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (72 Lyme Road Hanover NH 03755–1290). She received her B.A. in microbiology from the University of New Hampshire and her M.S. in food science and nutrition from the University of Massachusetts. Her research interests are in material interactions in ground water sampling including recent studies on decontaminating ground water sampling devices. She is a member of the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers and has been active in ASTM subcommittee D18.21 on Ground Water and Vadose Zone Investigations. Thomas A. Ranney is a staff scientist with Science and Technology Corp. (P.O. Box 127 Hanover NH 03755). He received his B.S. in education from Castleton State College and his M.S. in plant and soil science from the University of Vermont. His research interests are evaluating environmental sampling procedures and development of analytical methods.

Twenty polymeric tubings were filled with a test solution containing eight organic solutes. The test solutions were monitored for losses, indicating that sorption had occurred, and for signs that leaching of organic constituents had occurred. The tubings tested included seven flexible products and eight fluoropolymers. Among the rigid tubings tested, three fluoropolymers (fluorinated ethylene propylene [FEP], FEP-lined polyethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride) were the least sorptive tubings. However, even these tubings readily sorbed some of the analytes. Among the flexible tubings tested. a fluoroelastomer tubing and a tubing made of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene were the least sorptive. several of the tubings tested leached constituents into the test solution. The polyurethane, polyamide, flexible polyvinyl chloride (PvC), polyester-lined PvC, and silicone-modified thermoplastic elastomer tubings were found to leach the most constituents. We were unable to detect any constituents leaching from the polyethylene tubings, the rigid fluoropolymer tubings, and one of the plasticized polypropylene tubings.
