We present a novel approach to producing facial expression animations for new models. Instead of creating new facial animations from scratch for each new model created, we take advantage of existing animation data in the form of vertex motion vectors. Our method allows animations created by any tools or methods to be easily retargeted to new models. We call this process expression cloning and it provides a new alternative for creating facial animations for character models. Expression cloning makes it meaningful to compile a high-quality facial animation library since this data can be reused for new models. Our method transfers vertex motion vectors from a source face model to a target model having different geometric proportions and mesh structure (vertex number and connectivity). With the aid of an automated heuristic correspondence search, expression cloning typically requires a user to select fewer than ten points in the model. Cloned expression animations preserve the relative motions, dynamics, and character of the original facial animations.

In this paper we propose a new approach for the generation of visual scales for the visualization of scalar and multivariate data. Based on the specification of only a few correspondences between the data set and elements of a space of visual representations complex visualization mappings are produced. The foundation of this approach is the introduction of a multidimensional space of visual representations. The mapping between these spaces can be defined by approximating or satisfying the user defined relations between data values and visual atributes. © 1999 Eurographics Association. This paper explores multiple model adaptive estimation(MMAE) method, and with it, proposes a novel filtering algorithm. The proposed algorithm is an improved Kalman filter— multiple model adaptive estimation unscented Kalman filter(MMAE-UKF) rather than conventional Kalman filter methods,like the extended Kalman filter(EKF) and the unscented Kalman filter(UKF). UKF is used as a subfilter to obtain the system state estimate in the MMAE method. Single model filter has poor adaptability with uncertain or unknown system parameters,which the improved filtering method can overcome. Meanwhile,this algorithm is used for integrated navigation system of strapdown inertial navigation system(SINS) and celestial navigation system(CNS) by a ballistic missile's motion. The simulation results indicate that the proposed filtering algorithm has better navigation precision, can achieve optimal estimation of system state, and can be more flexible at the cost of increased computational burden.

Vector field visualization aims at generating images in order to convey the information existing in the data. We use Markov Random Field (MRF) texture synthesis methods to generate the visualization from a set of sample textures. MRF texture synthesis methods allow generating images that are locally similar to a given example image. We extend this idea for vector field visualization by identifying each vector value with a representative example image, e.g. a strongly directed texture that is rotated according to a 2D vector. The visualization is synthesized pixel by pixel, where each pixel is chosen from the sample texture according to the vector values of the local pixel. The visualization locally communicates the vector information as each pixel is chosen from a sample that is representative of the vector. Furthermore it is smooth, as MRF texture synthesis searches for best fitting neighborhoods. This leads to dense and smooth visualizations with the additional freedom to use arbitrary representation textures for any vector value. © 2003 Eurographics Association. All rights reserved.

Identifying predictive covariates, which forecast individual treatment effectiveness, is crucial for decision-making across different disciplines such as personalized medicine. These covariates, referred to as biomarkers, are extracted from pretreatment data, often within randomized controlled trials, and should be distinguished from prognostic biomarkers, which are independent of treatment assignment. Our study focuses on discovering predictive imaging biomarkers, specific image features, by leveraging pretreatment images to uncover new causal relationships. Unlike laborintensive approaches relying on handcrafted features prone to bias, we present a novel task of directly learning predictive features from images. We propose an evaluation protocol to assess a model's ability to identify predictive imaging biomarkers and differentiate them from purely prognostic ones by employing statistical testing and a comprehensive analysis of image feature attribution. We explore the suitability of deep learning models originally developed for estimating the conditional average treatment effect (CATE) for this task, which have been assessed primarily for their precision of CATE estimation while overlooking the evaluation of imaging biomarker discovery. Our proof-of-concept analysis demonstrates the feasibility and potential of our approach in discovering and validating predictive imaging biomarkers from synthetic outcomes and real-world image datasets. This paper focuses on the problem of management of CAD data by investigating the use of the software engineering principles of data abstraction and object-oriented programming as means for managing the volume and complexity of design data. It discusses how a data management system which manages abstract data types provides a framework for integrating a CAD environment by providing a single mechanism to manage data, programs, and the manipulation of the data with the programs. It also shows how two forms of abstraction, aggregation and generalization, can be used to model hierarchies of parts and components, and multiple design alternatives, respectively. These abstractions are then used to model the geometrical and topological data required to describe three-dimensional mechanical parts. © 1986 IEEE.

Emerging and established methods, such as optical imaging and MR spectroscopy (MRS), offer new opportunities for in situ biosensing. The limited tissue penetration of these modalities can be addressed by locally placing the sensor via minimally invasive trans-needle or trans-catheter access. This work introduces a generic system that mechanically scans an area of interest with a sensor, capable of generating 1D scans while registering them to a guiding modality. computer simulations illustrate the operation of this approach for a miniature RF coil as the mechanically scanned biosensor. Experimental studies demonstrated the approach on phantoms, using MRI as the guiding modality, and an MR-compatible manipulator, which carried a miniature RF coil, was used to scan and collect MRS and generated 1D MRS scans co-registered to the guiding MRI. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper describes the notion of Mobile Urban Drama and how a particular production is implemented to support engaging experiences via location-based mobile phone software. Mobile Urban Drama is a general concept that has been adapted for out-of-school learning projects by introducing support for solving assignments and producing multimedia-based documentation for learning purposes. Media production is seamlessly supported through a context-Aware media management system. The Mobile Urban Drama project, "Hasleinteractive", is presented. It supports biology, geography and math lessons for 7th to 9th graders in schools. The story is an environmental thriller that takes place partly on the pupils' mobile phones and partly in the real world-in nature, which must be investigated through exercises. The level of pupil engagement is evaluated through interviews with teachers and pupils, as well as an analysis of pupil productivity and produced media materials during the interactive Mobile Urban Drama experience. It is argued how the out-of-school learning features are successfully supported by the system, and we conclude that the level of productivity and engagement is higher than in usual pupil group work. © 2010 ACM.

An assortment of algorithms, termed three-dimensional (3D) scan-conversion algorithms, is presented. These algorithms scan-convert 3D geometric objects into their discrete voxel-map representation within a Cubic Frame Buffer (CFB). The geometric objects that are studied here include three-dimensional lines, polygons (optionally filled), polyhedra (optionally filled), cubic parametric curves, bicubic parametric surface patches, circles (optionally filled), and quadratic objects (optionally filled) like those used in constructive solid geometry: cylinders, cones, and spheres. All algorithms presented here do scan-conversion with computational complexity which is linear in the number of voxels written to the CFB. All algorithms are incremental and use only additions, subtractions, tests and simpler operations inside the inner algorithm loops. Since the algorithms are basically sequential, the temporal complexity is also linear. However, the polyhedron-fill and sphere-fill algorithms have less than linear temporal complexity, as they use a mechanism for writing a voxel run into the CFB. The temporal complexity would then be linear with the number of pixels in the object's 2D projection. All algorithms have been implemented as part of the CUBE Architecture, which is a voxel-based system for 3D graphics. The CUBE architecture is also presented. © ACM 1987.

In this abstract I describe the doctorial research project "Interaction Design for Public Spaces". The objective of the project is to explore and design interaction contexts in culture related public spaces such as museums, experience centres and festivals. As a perspective on this domain, I will focus on the usage of the body as an interaction device. Furthermore, the project will involve a dramaturgic take on communication and design of interactive systems in the pursuit of new ways to stage the interactive contexts. The outcome of the project will be guidelines and conceptual frameworks which will help interaction designers when designing for bodily movement, and communicating and staging interactive content in public spaces.
