An interactive computer graphics package has been developed for computer aided design of linear multivariable control systems. The package employs an effective human/computer interface achieved through the use of menus orchestrated in an hierarchial tree structure. Numerous state-of-the art design algorithms and analysis methods are incorporated which communicate through the interactive and asynchronous function control interfaces of computer graphics system, creating an environment attractive to both industrial users and academics.

Modern web-based Scientific Visualization applications try to overcome common limitations imposed by limited internet bandwidth, server bottlenecks or network latency. A further aspect is the desire to gain platform independence by solely using instruments which are platform independent by conception: the programming language Java, the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), or the 3D API *** present a prototype of a hybrid web-based Scientific Visualization system which makes use of the increasing computational power of modern desktop workstations and personal computers on the client side, and the superior performance provided by a powerful machine on the server side. In order to achieve high interaction rates and to balance computational load the user can dynamically assign selected tasks to his client or to the *** the scientific field of human modeling we have implemented a hybrid web-based toolkit for the modeling of human muscles and skin. Our application allows the on-line generation and manipulation of three-dimensional implicit muscle models in a heterogeneous network and it offers various parameters to adjust computation and response time versus rendering quality. © 1997 IEEE computer Society.

Natural disasters can cause huge loss of life, enormous amounts of property damage to the local communities. Although it is impossible to avoid the natural disasters, human sufferings can be reduced by adopting information technologies to the disaster response missions. In this paper, a web-based 3D visualization and cluster computing system was developed to facilitate and expedite the resource distribution process during a disaster. Our disaster management system utilizes state-of- The- Art computing cluster with 16 nodes of Intel Xeon-E5 processors (16 cores per node) to process the emergency supply requests from the disaster victims, and calculate the optimal resource distribution routes with the consideration of the damaged transportation infrastructures. The optimized resource distribution problem was solved with distributed all pair shortest path algorithm and the vehicle routing algorithm. The web-based 3D visualization system was developed with Google earth engine to display the disaster areas, affected households and resource distribution routes. The computation result from the cluster was automatically uploaded to the web-based 3D visualization system, enabling the users to immediately see the optimal resource distribution routes in a virtual 3D environment. The visualization system is flexible and can be easily adapted to a Google earth enabled mobile devices, desktop monitors as well as a Cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE). A historical disaster data from the Northwest Indiana was used to demonstrate the functionalities of the developed system. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2013.

Current user interface builders provide only low-level assistance, because they have knowledge of neither the application, nor the principles by which interface elements are combined effectively. We have developed a framework that unites the knowledge components essential for effective user interface presentation design. The framework consists of an application model (both a data model and a control model), a design process model that supports top-down iterative development, and graphic design knowledge that is used both to place dialog box elements such that their application dependent logical relationships are visually reinforced and to control design symmetry and balance. To demonstrate the framework's viability, we have constructed a tool based on encapsulated design knowledge that establishes high-level style preferences and provides expert assistance for the dialog box presentation design and menu structuring.

The Personas technique has been promoted as a strong tool for providing software developers with a better understanding of the prospective users of their software. This paper reports from a questionnaire survey regarding knowledge about Personas and their usage in software development companies. The questionnaire survey was conducted in a limited geographical area to establish the extent of Personas usage within all companies in the chosen region and determine whether software development companies used Personas during the development process. Several issues were identified as reasons for either not using the technique or for poor application of it. The study showed that 55% of the respondents had never heard about Personas. Among those who had heard about the Personas technique, the following obstacles towards usage of the technique were identified: Lack of knowledge of the technique, lack of resources (time and funding), Sparse descriptions - when applied and Personas not being integrated in the development. The traditional responsibilities of a graduate student instructor (GSI) usually consist of a combination of activities meant to aid the primary instructor for the course and to reinforce the material that is being delivered in lecture. Creating and grading homework sets, supervising labs, meeting with students in discussion sessions, and grading exams are a few of the many different tasks that a GSI must undertake throughout a typical semester. However, when a GSI is involved in a team-based, senior-level design course, s/he must assume a different role and make use of a totally different set of skills in order to be an effective member of the teaching staff. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007.

Most medical image processing techniques require the clinician to form a mental model of the anatomy being depicted. We present systems that allow a more direct visualization of anatomical shapes and measurement of parameters from medical image data, including time-dependent and multi-modal images sets. Cardiac-Station realistically represents heart motion and extracts clinical parameters from ventricular MR images, in the diagnosis of heart disease. Brain-Reg displays abnormal regions of the brain by registering multi-modal images, and supports the analysis of differences in the hippocampus between patients and a control group. © 2004 IEEE.

Despite of exciting advances in image-based rendering and novel view synthesis, it is still challenging to achieve high-resolution results that can reach production-level quality when applying such methods to the task of stereo conversion. At the same time, only very few dedicated stereo conversion approaches exist, which also fall short in terms of the required quality. Hence, in this paper, we present a novel method for high-resolution 2D-to-3D conversion. It is fully differentiable in all of its stages and performs disparity-informed warping, consistent foreground-background compositing, and background-aware inpainting. To enable temporal consistency in the resulting video, we propose a strategy to integrate information from additional video frames. Extensive ablation studies validate our design choices, leading to a fully automatic model that outperforms existing approaches by a large margin (49-70% LPIPS error reduction). Finally, inspired from current practices in manual stereo conversion, we introduce optional interactive tools into our model, which allow to steer the conversion process and make it significantly more applicable for 3D film production.

Three-dimensional rotational angiography (3DRA) is a promising imaging technique which yields high-resolution isotropic 3D images of vascular structures. Raw 3DRA images, however, usually suffer from a high noise level and the presence of other artifacts. For accurate visualization and quantification of vascular anomalies, noise reduction is therefore highly desirable. In this paper we analyze the effects of several linear and nonlinear filtering techniques for that purpose. From the results of in vitro experiments we conclude that edge-enhancing anisotropic diffusion is very suitable for mentioned tasks. However, in view of the computational requirements of this technique, the regularized isotropic nonlinear diffusion scheme may be considered a useful alternative. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
