Co-registering pre- and intra- operative MR data is an important yet challenging problem due to different acquisition parameters, resolutions, and plane orientations. Despite its importance, previous approaches are often computationally intensive and thus cannot be employed in real-time. In this paper, a novel three-step approach is proposed to dynamically register pre-operative 4D MR data with intra-operative 2D RT-MRI to guide intracardiac procedures. Specifically, a novel preparatory step, executed in the pre-operative phase, is introduced to generate bridging information that can be used to significantly speed up the on-the-fly registration in the intraoperative procedure. Our experimental results demonstrate an accuracy of 0.42 mm and a processing speed of 26 FPS of the proposed approach on an off-the-shelf PC. This approach, is in particularly developed for performing intra-cardiac procedures with real-time MR guidance.

This paper focuses on the application of software engineering practices to the development of instructional web sites. The development of a web site, to support a distance or campus-based online course, is a very complex process that involves many instructional and technical aspects, including the instructional purpose of the course, its content, its structure, its interface, and its teaching-learning activities. The use of a method is essential for dealing with the complexity of this process. We describe, in this paper, a software engineering method that helps course designers and teachers to develop high quality instructional web sites. The design of the method was based on the integration of well-known principles, concepts and process models borrowed from instructional design, method engineering, and object-oriented software engineering. The method addresses the managerial processes required to plan, organize, and control the project, as well as the instructional and technical activities involved in the development of high quality course sites. © 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

As a part of an ongoing project, in this paper we introduce the first version of a system which has a novel methodology for Cine (as in cinema) MRI based control of a cardiac robot for beating heart surgeries. The system uses the preoperative planning approach that we developed earlier, and integrates it to the intraoperative algorithms for controlling a robot and tracking some specific landmarks of a highly dynamical surgical field. In particular, our late studies presented herein aim to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating appropriate computational tools to achieve the volumetric image guidance for minimally invasive surgeries in the beating heart. We conceive of the system as practicable for in vitro experiments upon the completion of the first physical prototype, which may pave the way for expansion of the approach for other complex surgeries as well.

The 19th robotics program at the annual AAAI conference was held in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2010. In this article we give a summary of three components of the exhibition: the Small-Scale Manipulation Challenge: Robotic Chess;the Learning by Demonstration Challenge;and the Education Track. In each section we detail the challenge task. We also describe the participating teams, highlight the research questions they tackled, and briefly describe the systems they demonstrated. Traditional models of input work on the assumption that inputs delivered to a system are fairly certain to have occurred as they are reported. However, a number of new input modalities, such as pen-based inputs, hand and body gesture inputs, and voice input, do not share this property. Inputs under these techniques are normally acquired by a process of recognition. As a result, each of these techniques makes mistakes and provides inputs which are approximate or uncertain. This paper considers some preliminry techniques for dialog management in the presence of this uncertainty. These techniques—including a new input model and a set of extended state machine abstractions—will explicitly model uncertainty and handle it as a normal and expected part of the input process.

In this paper, our experiences so far with developing a platform for mobile P2P applications with the LightPeers framework are presented. We experienced that the use of a role-based approach in the initial application development phase showed useful. The roles provide a high-level abstraction for common peer behavior within a session, and are suitable for describing a specific setup of peers, e.g., when developing a new system

The article discusses an algorithmic method for increasing the strength characteristics of products produced by additive manufacturing technologies through thickening the internal grid structure of filling the model when transferring to the control code during the operation of the slicer program. In the field of computer vision feature matching in high dimensional feature spaces is a commonly used technique for object recognition. One major problem is to find an adequate similarity measure for the particular feature space, as there is usually only little knowledge about the structure of that space. As a possible solution to this problem this paper presents a method to obtain a similarity measure suitable for the task of feature matching without the need for structural information of the particular feature space. As the described similarity measure is based on the topology of the feature space and the topology is generated by a growing neural gas, no knowledge about the particular structure of the feature space is needed. In addition, the used neural gas quantizes the feature vectors and thus reduces the amount of data which has to be stored and retrieved for the purpose of object recognition. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
