Recently, many compression algorithms are applied to decrease the cost of video storage and transmission. This will introduce undesirable artifacts, which severely degrade visual quality. Therefore, Video Compression Artifacts Removal (VCAR) aims at reconstructing a high-quality video from its corrupted version of compression. Generally, this task is considered as a vision-related instead of media-related problem. In vision-related research, the visual quality has been significantly improved while the computational complexity and bitrate issues are less considered. In this work, we review the performance constraints of video coding and transfer to evaluate the VCAR outputs. Based on the analyses, we propose a Spatial-Temporal Attention-Guided Enhancement Network (STAGE-Net). First, we employ dynamic filter processing, instead of conventional optical flow method, to reduce the computational cost of VCAR. Second, we introduce self-attention mechanism to design Sequential Residual Attention Blocks (SRABs) to improve visual quality of enhanced video frames with bitrate constraints. Both quantitative and qualitative experimental results have demonstrated the superiority of our proposed method, which achieves high visual qualities and low computational costs. © 2023 IEEE.

Human action recognition has been one of the hot topics in computer vision both from the handcrafted and deep learning approaches. In the handcrafted approach, the extracted features are encoded for reducing the size of these features. Amonsgt the state-of-the-art approaches is to encode these visual features using the Gaussian mixture model. However, the size of the codebook is an issue in terms of the computation complexity, especially for large-scale data as it requires encoding using a large codebook. In this paper, we introduced the use of different optimizers to reduce the codebook size while boosting its accuracy. To illustrate the performance, first we use the improved dense trajectories (IDT) to extract the handcrafted features. This is followed with encoding the descriptor using Fisher kernel-based codebook using the Gaussian mixture model. Next, the support vector machine is used to classify the categories. We then use and compare five different Stochastic gradient descent optimization techniques to modify the number of Gaussian components. In this manner we are able to select the discriminative foreground features (as represented by the final number of Gaussian components), and omit the background features. Finally, to show the performance improvement of the proposed method, we implement this technique to two datasets UCF101 and HMDB51. © 2022 SPIE.

Multimodal sentiment analysis refers to the use of computers to analyze and identify the emotions that people want to express through the extracted multimodal sentiment features, and it plays a significant role in human-computer interaction and financial market prediction. Most existing approaches to multimodal sentiment analysis use contextual information for modeling, and while this modeling approach can effectively capture the contextual connections within modalities, the correlations between modalities are often overlooked, and the correlations between modalities are also critical to the final recognition results in multimodal sentiment analysis. Therefore, this paper proposes a multimodal sentiment analysis approach based on the universal transformer, a framework that uses the universal transformer to model the connections between multiple modalities while employing effective feature extraction methods to capture the contextual connections of individual modalities. We evaluated our proposed method on two benchmark datasets for multimodal sentiment analysis, CMU-MOSI and CMU-MOSEI, and the results outperformed other methods of the same type.

Remote sensing image classification is a popular yet challenging field. Many researchers have combined convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformers for hyperspectral imaging (HSI) classification tasks. However, in traditional Transformers, shallow-level information does not propagate well to deeper layers, which can lead to spatial variations and overfitting. Moreover, traditional Transformer models use an external classification token (CLS token) that is randomly initialized and often struggles to generalize effectively. In this article, we combine the strengths of HSI and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, using LiDAR as an external CLS token, which significantly enhances classification accuracy and reliability. We propose a new multimodal cross-layer fusion transformer network (MCFTNet), integrating CNNs with the latest Transformer networks. It includes a CNN for extracting spatial features and a hybrid cross-patch attention mechanism for land cover classification, leveraging LiDAR data to generate CLS and HSI patch tokens. More importantly, to reduce the loss of valuable information during the layer-by-layer propagation, we designed cross-layer skip connections. Through adaptive learning, these cross-layer fusions help address the gradient vanishing problem in deep networks while preserving early-layer features. This enables the model to better integrate information from different layers, enhancing both its stability and performance. We carried out in-depth experiments on commonly used benchmark datasets, specifically, the University of Houston dataset, the Trento dataset, and the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park dataset. We compared the results of the proposed MCFTNet model with those obtained from state-of-the-art Transformer models, classical CNNs, and traditional classifiers. As a result, the MCFTNet model outshones them all in terms of performance. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

The film industry exerts significant economic and cultural influence, and its rapid development is contingent upon the expertise of industry professionals, underscoring the critical importance of film-shooting education. However, this process typically necessitates multiple practice in complex professional venues using expensive equipment, presenting a significant obstacle for ordinary learners who struggle to access such training environments. Despite VR technology has already shown its potential in education, existing research has not addressed the crucial learning component of replicating the shooting process. Moreover, the limited functionality of traditional controllers hinder the fulfillment of the educational requirements. Therefore, we developed VAction VR system, combining high-fidelity virtual environments with a custom-designed controller to simulate the real-world camera operation experience. The system's lightweight design ensures cost-effective and efficient deployment. Experiment results demonstrated that VAction significantly outperforms traditional methods in both practice effectiveness and user experience, indicating its potential and usefulness in film-shooting education. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Deep generative models have been studied and developed primarily in the context of natural images and computer vision. This has spurred the development of (Bayesian) methods that use these generative models for inverse problems in image restoration, such as denoising, inpainting, and super-resolution. In recent years, generative modeling for Bayesian inference on sensory data has also gained traction. Nevertheless, the direct application of generative modeling techniques initially designed for natural images on raw sensory data is not straightforward, requiring solutions that deal with high dynamic range signals acquired from multiple sensors or arrays of sensors that interfere with each other, and that typically acquire data at a very high rate. Moreover, the exact physical data-generating process is often complex or unknown. As a consequence, approximate models are used, resulting in discrepancies between model predictions and the observations that are non-Gaussian, in turn complicating the Bayesian inverse problem. Finally, sensor data is often used in real-time processing or decision-making systems, imposing stringent requirements on, e.g., latency and throughput. In this paper, we will discuss some of these challenges and offer approaches to address them, all in the context of high-rate real-time sensing applications in automotive radar and medical imaging. © The Authors. Topic shift detection aims to identify whether there is a change in the current topic of conversation or if a change is needed. The study found previous work did not evaluate the performance of large language models like ChatGPT on the task of topic shift. Therefore, this paper's main task and innovation lie in analyzing ChatGPT's performance on topic shift detection. To provide a more comprehensive evaluation, we conducted topic shift detection tasks on ChatGPT from three aspects: single utterances, adjacent utterances, and contextual levels. Additionally, to gauge the performance of large language models, we conducted experiments on multiple small-scale models and compared the results of the two models. Experimental results on the publicly available English TIAGE dataset showed that small-scale models exhibited lower recall in all three aspects, while ChatGPT performed better in the recall. This suggests that compared to small-scale models, large models are more capable of accurately detecting topic shifts. However, large models also exhibited lower precision, indicating that while ChatGPT can recognize content differences in utterances, its judgment on whether these different contents belong to the same topic is poor. © 2024 IEEE.

Fuzzy Intelligence Learning Based on Bounded Rationality in IoMT Systems: A Case Study in Parkinson's Disease

As a cause of interfering with routine activities, freezing of gait (FOG) is a severe syndrome of Parkinson's disease (PD) and usually performs as an abrupt and momentary inability to effective stepping forward. Advanced wearable acceleration sensors based on socially implemented Internet of medical things (IoMT) devices can remotely provide a platform for recognizing FOG. However, due to the diverse data acquisition modes that appear in classic IoMT devices, the obtained data may contain imprecise, hesitant, and incomplete ones. Meanwhile, the bounded rationality owned by neurologists usually has a big impact on using wearable acceleration sensors to predict illnesses. Therefore, the objective of this article lies in exploring a fuzzy intelligence learning approach based on bounded rationality in IoMT systems and providing a valid scheme for biomedical data analysis. Specifically, a brand-new three-way group decision-making approach by means of TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese for interactive multicriteria decision-making) with incomplete dual hesitant fuzzy (DHF) information and its applications in detecting FOG in PD using IoMT devices are systematically explored. First, taking advantage of DHF sets (DHFSs) when depicting realistic group decision information, the concept of multigranulation (MG) incomplete DHF information systems is built. Second, adjustable MG DHF probabilistic rough sets (PRSs) are further put forward via DHF similarity relations. Third, a three-way group decision-making approach is constructed by virtue of adjustable MG DHF PRSs and TODIM. Finally, the validity, effectiveness, and practicality of the constructed three-way group decision-making approach are investigated by a University of California, Irvine (UCI) dataset with several experimental analyses in the background of FOG detection in PD using IoMT devices. The experimental result indicates that the developed fuzzy intelligence learning approach achieves reasonable diagnostic conclusions
