In order to generate local addresses for an array section A(l:h:s) with block-cyclic distribution, an efficient compiling method is required. In this paper, two local address generation methods for the block-cyclic distribution are presented. One is a simple local address generation method that is modified from the virtual-block scheme. The other is a linear-time /spl Delta/M table construction method. The array elements of A(l:h:s) to be accessed at run-time build up a family of lines. By using the equation of the lines, a /spl Delta/M table can be generated in O(k) time. Experimental results show that a simple local address generation method has poor performance but a linear-time /spl Delta/M table generation method is faster than other algorithms in /spl Delta/M table generation time and access time for 10,000 array elements.

Matching confidence is an important element for evaluating image matching quality. A method is presented which uses the technique of tests of hypotheses to determine image matching confidence under a certain testing level. A differential equation was employed in modelling deforestation by human population interactions to yield an explicit mathematical model. The theoretical relation and many possible models were applied to the grid cell data in Hiroshima Prefecture, and relative appropriateness of each model was evaluated by Akaike's information criterion (AIC) using raw data. Intensive further verification was executed by the bootstrap method. It was demonstrated that the theoretical relation was in the best agreement among many other models in comparison.

From the transfer functions of an acousto-optic (AO) cell, it is found that some basic imageprocessing can be accomplished by using AO cells. Instead of frequency-plane filters, the AO cells are placed directly behind the object. The one dimensional edge enhancement results using one AO cell can be improved by using two acousto-optic cells which are put in tandem and with contra-propagating sound. The dominant second derivative operation obtained from the transfer function of the undiffracted order works like a one-dimensional Laplacian operator which enables improved edge enhancement.

This paper presents a joint scene and signal modeling for the design of an adaptive quantization scheme applied to the wavelet coefficients in subband video coding applications. The joint modeling includes two integrated components: the scene modeling characterized by the neighborhood binding with Gibbs random field and the signal modeling characterized by the matching of the wavelet coefficient distribution. With this joint modeling, the quantization becomes adaptive to not only wavelet coefficient signal distribution but also the prominent image scene structures. The proposed quantization scheme based on the joint scene and signal modeling is accomplished through adaptive clustering with spatial neighborhood constraints. Such spatial constraint allows the quantization to shift its bit allocation, if necessary, to those perceptually more important coefficients so that the preservation of scene structure can be achieved. This joint modeling enables the quantization to reach beyond the limit of the traditional statistical signal modeling-based approaches which often lack scene adaptivity. Furthermore, the dynamically enforced spatial constraints of the Gibbs random field are able to overcome the shortcomings of the artificial block division which are usually the major source of distortion when the video is coded by block-based approaches at low bit rate. In addition, we introduce a cellular neural network architecture for the hardware implementation of this proposed adaptive quantization. We prove that this cellular neural network does converge to the desired steady state with the suggested update scheme. The adaptive quantization scheme based on the joint scene and signal modeling has been successfully applied to videoconferencing application and very favorable results have been obtained.
