Recent progress in computer technology in both hardware and software, combined with marked cost reductions, have placed quantitatively accurate video densitometry systems within the reach of the individual clinician, biomedical researcher, and community hospital. While much of the attention generated by advances in imageprocessing has focussed on larger scale procedures, such as CAT, chemical shift, and positron emission tomography, important applications can be found for considerably more modest systems. In this article, we discuss three such applications of DUMAS, a personal computer-based imaging system developed by the imageprocessing Center at Drexel University. A potential technique for quantifying numbers of estrogen receptors in tumorous breast tissue samples as a predictor of patient responsiveness to hormonal therapy is described first, along with the possible sources of error. The second application, also related to clinical pathology and cancer, outlines methods for relating changes in nuclear and cell morphology to the diagnosis of Sezary Cell Syndrome. The utility of binary image filtering methods in the classification of cell types is discussed. The third application involves the development of a semi-automatic procedure for the determination of vessel diameter in arteriograms. A detailed description of the optimization and curve-fitting algorithms is provided along with preliminary test results comparing various approaches. The need for user demand to fuel research and development in small-scale imaging system is also discussed.
Infrared imaging sensors are characterized by extended dynamic ranges ~ QOdb due to target and background variations and increased senstivity of the sensors. The dynamic range of display devices such as video monitors...

The authors outline their approach for automatic translation of geometric entities produced by a CAD system into a relational graph structure. They have developed a system which uses 3-D object descriptions created on a commercial CAD system and expressed in the industry-standard IGES form, and performs geometric inferencing to object a relational graph representation of the object which can be stored in a database of models of object recognition. Details of the IGES standard, the geometric inference engine, and some formal properties of 3-D models are discussed. In addition to the process of translation from one data format to another, the interference engine extracts higher-level information from the CAD model and stores it explicitly in the new data structure. The higher-level features will allow the search space explored during the object recognition stage to be pruned early.< >

A technique to guide landmark matching known as hopping dynamic programming is described. The location of the model in the scene is estimated with a least-squares fit. A heuristic measure is then computed to decide if the model is in the scene. The shape features of an object are the landmarks associated with the object. The landmarks of an object are defined as the points of interest of the object that have important shape attributes. Examples of landmarks are corners, holes, protrusions, and high-curvature points.< >

A method for estimation of the difference in the times of arrival of wavefronts of two separate sensors is introduced. The method, called SPECCORR, exploits the spectral correlation property, called spectral coherence, that essentially all modulated signals exhibit to obtain estimates that are highly tolerant to severely corruptive noise and interference. This tolerance is explained theoretically and demonstrated with simulations.< >

The unifying framework of the spectral-correlation theory of cyclostationary signals is used to present a broad treatment of weak, random signal detection for interception purposes. The relationships among a variety of previously proposed ad hoc detectors, optimum detectors, and newly proposed detectors are established. The spectral-correlation-plane approach to the interception problem is put forth as especially promising for detection, classification, and estimation in particularly difficult environments involving unknown and changing noise levels and interference activity. A fundamental drawback of the popular radiometric methods in such environments is explained.< >
