As a popular evolutionary algorithm, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm has been successfully applied into the threshold-based image segmentation problem. Based on our analysis, we find that the Otsu segmentation function is separable which means each variable is independent. Due to its one-dimensional search strategy and relative power global but poorer local search abilities, ABC could find an acceptable but not precise segmentation results. For making more precise search and further enhancing the achievements on image segmentation, we propose an Otsu segmentation method based on a new ABC algorithm with an improved scout bee strategy. Different from the traditional scout bee strategy, we use a local search strategy when a bee stagnates for a defined value. The experimental results on Berkeley segmentation database demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. © 2020, Springer science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. All rights reserved.

The early detection of colorectal polyps is crucial for the reduction of mortality rates. However, manually identifying polyps is time-consuming and expensive, increasing the risk of missing them. Our paper aims to address this issue by presenting an automated segmentation approach for colorectal polyps. This paper proposes a method that combines a skip connection with hybrid attention guidance (AG) using attention guidance (AG) and residual path frameworks to identify salient features. Furthermore, we augment test samples using original, horizontal flip, and vertical flip transformations to enhance model robustness through Test Time Augmentation (TTA). The model was trained with Kvasir-seg samples and evaluated on Kvasir-seg and CVC-ClinicDB datasets to gauge generalizability. A significant accuracy (0.9546), a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.8557, a Cross-section over Union (IoU) of 0.8824, a Recall (0.8221), a Precision (0.8922), an area under Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC-AUC) of 0.9454, and an area under Precision-Recall (AUC-PR) of 0.8717 were achieved without TTA. Through TTA integration, accuracy (0.9993), DSC (0.8663), IoU (0.8277), Recall (0.8060), Precision (0.9364), and ROC-AUC (0.9587) have been improved. A comparison of our framework with state-of-the-art models demonstrated its effectiveness and segmentation capabilities. Additionally, the proposed model contains only 0.47 million parameters and a weight size of 6.71 MB, illustrating its potential for clinical diagnostics. A computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system improves patient outcomes by detecting colorectal polyps early and improving segmentation accuracy.

Dual-State Personalized Knowledge Tracing with Emotional Incorporation

Knowledge tracing has been widely used in online learning systems to guide the students' future learning. However, most existing KT models primarily focus on extracting abundant information from the question sets and explore the relationships between them, but ignore the personalized student behavioral information in the learning process. This will limit the model's ability to accurately capture the personalized knowledge states of students and reasonably predict their performances. To alleviate this limitation, we explicitly models the personalized learning process by incorporating the emotions, a representative personalized behavior in the learning process, into KT framework. Specifically, we present a novel Dual-State Personalized Knowledge Tracing with Emotional Incorporation model to achieve this goal: Firstly, we incorporate emotional information into the modeling process of knowledge state, resulting in the Knowledge State Boosting Module. Secondly, we design an Emotional State Tracing Module to monitor students' personalized emotional states, and propose an emotion prediction method based on personalized emotional states. Finally, we apply the predicted emotions to enhance students' response prediction. Furthermore, to extend the generalization capability of our model across different datasets, we design a transferred version of DEKT, named Transfer Learningbased Self-loop model (T-DEKT). Recently, the state space model Mamba has demonstrated efficient long-sequence modeling capabilities, particularly for addressing long-sequence visual tasks in 3D medical imaging. However, existing generative self-supervised learning methods have not yet fully unleashed Mamba’s potential for handling long-range dependencies because they overlook the inherent causal properties of state space sequences in masked modeling. To address this challenge, we propose a general-purpose pre-training framework called MambaMIM, a masked image modeling method based on a novel TOKen-Interpolation strategy (TOKI) for the selective structure state space sequence, which learns causal relationships of state space within the masked sequence. Further, MambaMIM introduces a bottom-up 3D hybrid masking strategy to maintain a masking consistency across different architectures and can be used on any single or hybrid Mamba architecture to enhance its multi-scale and long-range representation capability. We pre-train MambaMIM on a large-scale dataset of 6.8K CT scans and evaluate its performance across eight public medical segmentation benchmarks. Extensive downstream experiments reveal the feasibility and advancement of using Mamba for medical image pre-training. In particular, when we apply the MambaMIM to a customized architecture that hybridizes MedNeXt and Vision Mamba, we consistently obtain the state-of-the-art segmentation performance. Background: Noncontrast computed tomography (CT) scans are not used for evaluating left ventricle myocardial mass (LV mass), which is typically evaluated with contrast CT or cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Objectives: The purpose of the study was to assess the feasibility of LV mass estimation from standard, ECG-gated, noncontrast CT using an artificial intelligence (AI) approach and compare it with coronary CT angiography (CTA) and CMR. Methods: We enrolled consecutive patients who underwent coronary CTA, which included noncontrast CT calcium scanning and contrast CTA, and CMR. The median interval between coronary CTA and CMR was 22 days (interquartile range: 3-76). We utilized a no new UNet AI model that automatically segmented noncontrast CT structures. AI measurement of LV mass was compared to contrast CTA and CMR. Results: A total of 316 patients (age: 57.1 ± 16.7 years, 56% male) were included. The AI segmentation took on average 22 seconds per case. An excellent correlation was observed between AI and contrast CTA LV mass measures (r = 0.84, P < 0.001), with no significant differences (136.5 ± 55.3 g vs 139.6 ± 56.9 g, P = 0.133). Bland-Altman analysis showed minimal bias of 2.9. When compared to CMR, measured LV mass was higher with AI (136.5 ± 55.3 g vs 127.1 ± 53.1 g, P < 0.001). There was an excellent correlation between AI and CMR (r = 0.85, P < 0.001), with a small bias (−9.4). There were no statistical differences between the correlations of LV mass between contrast CTA and CMR or AI and CMR. Conclusions: The AI-based automated estimation of LV mass from noncontrast CT demonstrated excellent correlations and minimal biases when compared to contrast CTA and CMR. © 2024 The Authors

In this paper, we present our ArzEn corpus, an Egyptian Arabic-English code-switching (CS) spontaneous speech corpus. The corpus is collected through informal interviews with 38 Egyptian bilingual university students and employees held in a soundproof room. A total of 12 hours are recorded, transcribed, validated and sentence segmented. The corpus is mainly designed to be used in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems, however, it also provides a useful resource for analyzing the CS phenomenon from linguistic, sociological, and psychological perspectives. In this paper, we first discuss the CS phenomenon in Egypt and the factors that gave rise to the current language. We then provide a detailed description on how the corpus was collected, giving an overview on the participants involved. We also present statistics on the CS involved in the corpus, as well as a summary to the effort exerted in the corpus development, in terms of number of hours required for transcription, validation, segmentation and speaker annotation. Finally, we discuss some factors contributing to the complexity of the corpus, as well as Arabic-English CS behaviour that could pose potential challenges to ASR systems. © European Language Resources Association (ELRA), licensed under CC-BY-NC

Context-aware entity typing in knowledge graphs

Knowledge graph entity typing aims to infer entities' missing types in knowledge graphs which is an important but under-explored issue. This paper proposes a novel method for this task by utilizing entities' contextual information. Specifically, we design two inference mechanisms: i) N2T: independently use each neighbor of an entity to infer its type;ii) Agg2T: aggregate the neighbors of an entity to infer its type. Those mechanisms will produce multiple inference results, and an exponentially weighted pooling method is used to generate the final inference result. Furthermore, we propose a novel loss function to alleviate the false-negative problem during training. Experiments on two real-world KGs demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Code-Switching (CS) Text-To-Speech (TTS) models have gained attention due to the increasing prevalence of multilingual communication. However, existing models struggle to meet the growing demand for personalized CS TTS, particularly in Zero-Shot (ZS) scenarios where the model should generate speech for an unseen speaker from reference speech. In this paper, we propose ZCS-CDiff, a zero-shot code-switching TTS system with the Conformer-based diffusion model. We disentangle speech features and use the diffusion model to precisely model these disentangled attributes, resulting in high-quality ZS CS speech. Additionally, we introduce a Conformer-based WaveNet as the denoising network within the diffusion model to further improve the accuracy of modeling different attributes. We also designed a speaker-assist module to help the model better handle speaker information extracted from the reference speech, resulting in CS speech with higher speaker similarity. Experimental results and ablation studies demonstrate that the ZS CS speech generated by ZCS-CDiff has good speech naturalness, intelligibility, and speaker similarity while confirming the effectiveness of our design choices. The paper demonstrates for the first time that a brain-inspired spiking neural network (SNN) architecture can be used not only to learn spatio-temporal data, but also to extract fuzzy spatio-temporal rules from such data and to update these rules incrementally in a transfer learning mode. We propose a method, where a SNN model learns incrementally new time-space data related to new classes/tasks/categories, always utilising some previously learned knowledge, and presents the evolved knowledge as fuzzy spatio-temporal rules. Similarly, to how the brain manifests transfer learning, these SNN models do not need to be restricted in number of layers, neurons in each layer, etc. as they adopt self-organising learning principles. The continuously evolved fuzzy rules from spatio-temporal data are interpretable for a better understanding of the processes that generate the data. The proposed method is based on a brain-inspired SNN architecture NeuCube and is illustrated on tasks of incremental and transfer learning and knowledge transfer using spatio-temporal EEG data measuring brain activity, when persons performing tasks in space and time. The method is a general one and opens the field to create new types of adaptable and explainable AI systems for applications across domain areas, e.g. brain-machine interfaces, robotics, speech and sound processing, cognitive studies and the creation of lifelong-learning cognitive machines. © 2022, CC BY.

Gigapixel image analysis, particularly for whole slide images (WSIs), often relies on multiple instance learning (MIL). Under the paradigm of MIL, patch image representations are extracted and then fixed during the training of the MIL classifiers for efficiency consideration. However, the invariance of representations makes it difficult to perform data augmentation for WSI-level model training, which significantly limits the performance of the downstream WSI analysis. The current data augmentation methods for gigapixel images either introduce additional computational costs or result in a loss of semantic information, which is hard to meet the requirements for efficiency and stability needed for WSI model training. In this paper, we propose a Promptable Representation Distribution Learning framework (PRDL) for both patch-level representation learning and WSI-level data augmentation. Meanwhile, we explore the use of prompts to guide data augmentation in feature space, which achieves promptable data augmentation for training robust WSI-level models.
