Three-dimensional models have been used to aid medical diagnoses, using images generated by modalities like Magnetic Resonance Imaging. They can provide a more complete vision of objects since their depth is taken into account. Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has also been used to aid the diagnosis. One important step in Three-dimensional CBIR (Model Retrieva) systems is the comparison between two models by using a set of features extracted and stored in a database. In this paper we present a novel method to compare two models, using the Bipartite graphs technique, with the aim to improve the retrieval precision. This technique retrieves 3D medical models of the left ventricle in order to aid the diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure. Results showed that the novel method improved the precision by 10% when compared to the Similarity Function of Euclidean and Manhattan distance. These results confirmed that bipartite graph techniques can be used to improve the accuracy of Model Retrieval systems.

With robots becoming more prevalent in daily life, it is important to understand human attitudes toward robots not only when humans interact with them directly, as most research examines, but also when people are indirectly exposed to robots performing nonsocial tasks (e.g., cleaning) in their vicinity. Because minimalistic robots are at present more likely to be found in households than human-like robots, this study examined human reactions to nonsocial, nonanthropomorphic robots. The specific focus of this study was on how robot communication style during human-robot co-location affects human perceptions of a group of robots. This paper also evaluates the relationship between participants' scores on the Negative Attitudes toward Robots Scale (NARS) and their behavioral response to and perceptions of robots in their environment. Our results suggest that robot communication style did not affect perceptions of robots and that responses on the NARS may not translate directly to behavior toward robots.

Audio rendering of mathematical expressions has accessibility benefits for people with visual impairment. Seeking a systematic way to measure participants' perception of the rendered formulae with audio cues, we investigate the design of performance metrics to capture the distance between reference and perceived math expressions. We propose EAR-Math, a methodological approach for user-based evaluation of math rendering against a baseline. EAR-Math measures systems' performance using three fine-grained error rates based on the structural elements, arithmetic operators, numbers and identifiers in a formula. The proposed methodology and metrics were successfully applied in a pilot study, where 5 sighted and 2 blind participants evaluated 39 stimuli rendered by MathPlayer in Greek. In the obtained results, we observed that structural elements had the highest mean and variance of errors, which improved from 18% in the first attempt to 10% and 7% in two following attempts. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

This paper presents a planning approach using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) modeled as a Subsumption Architecture to generate plans for driving trains. The main idea of a planning strategy is to generate a sequence of actions for an agent, which can use these actions to change its environment. CBR allows using prior experiences for new task assignments. In the proposed ap-proach, each previous experience (if not applicable) is adjusted us-ing one or more adaptation methods like substitutive and genetic algorithm. Our interest is to create a flexible architecture for an agent and apply it to simulate train conductions. We expect that the plans generated by this approach generate better results com-pared to another studies already developed for the area mainly considering fuel consumption and travel time.

Modern epidemiological forecasts of common illnesses, such as the flu, rely on both traditional surveillance sources as well as digital surveillance data. However, most published studies have been retrospective. Concurrently, the reports about flu activity generally lags by several weeks and even when published are revised for several weeks more. We posit that effectively handling this uncertainty is one of the key challenges for a real-time prediction system in this sphere. In this paper, we present a detailed prospective analysis on the generation of robust quantitative predictions about temporal trends of flu activity, using several surrogate data sources for 15 Latin American countries. We present our findings about the limitations and possible advantages of correcting the uncertainty associated with official flu estimates. We also compare the prediction accuracy between model-level fusion of different surrogate data sources against data-level fusion. Finally, we present a novel matrix factorization approach using neighborhood embedding to predict flu case counts. Comparing our proposed ensemble method against several baseline methods helps us demarcate the importance of different data sources for the countries under consideration. Copyriqht © SIAM.

Background: Surveillance of health care-associated infections is an essential component of infection prevention programs, but conventional systems are labor intensive and performance dependent. Objective: To develop an automatic surveillance and classification system for health care-associated bloodstream infection (HABSI), and to evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional infection control personnel (ICP)-based surveillance system. Methods: We developed a Web-based system that was integrated into the medical information system of a 2200-bed teaching hospital in Taiwan. The system automatically detects and classifies HABSIs. Results: In this study, the number of computer-detected HABSIs correlated closely with the number of HABSIs detected by ICP by department (n=20;r=.999 P<.001) and by time (n=14;r=.941;P<.001). Compared with reference standards, this system performed excellently with regard to sensitivity (98.16%), specificity (99.96%), positive predictive value (95.81%), and negative predictive value (99.98%). The system enabled decreasing the delay in confirmation of HABSI cases, on average, by 29 days. Conclusions: This system provides reliable and objective HABSI data for quality indicators, improving the delay caused by a conventional surveillance system. © 2020 JMIR Publications Inc.
