Event tracking is the task of discovering temporal patterns of events from text streams. Existing approaches for event tracking have two limitations: scalability and their inability to rule out non-relevant portions within texts in the stream 'relevant' to the event of interest. In this study, we propose a novel approach to tackle these limitations. To demonstrate our approach, we track news events across a collection of weblogs spanning a two-month time period. In particular we track variations in the intensity of discussion on a given event over time. We demonstrate that our model is capable of tracking both events and sub-events at a finer granularity. We also present in this paper our analysis of the blog dataset distributed by the conference organizers. Copyright © 2009, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***).

Sensor networks are being used in several emerging applications not even imagined some years ago due to advances in sensing, computing, and communication techniques. However, these advances also pose various challenges that must be faced. One important challenge is related to the autonomous capability needed to setup and adapt the networks, which decentralizes the control of the network, saving communication and energy resources. Middleware technology helps in addressing this kind of problem, but there is still a need for additional solutions, particularly considering dynamic changes in users' requirements and operation conditions. This paper presents an agent-based framework acting as an integral part of a middleware to support autonomous setup and adaptation of sensor networks. It adds interoperability among heterogeneous nodes in the network, by means of autonomous behavior and reasoning. These features also address the needs for system setup and adaptations in the network, reducing the communication overhead and decentralizing the decision making mechanism. Additionally, preliminary results are also presented. © 2009 IEEE.

Searches on patents to determine prior art violations are often cumbersome and require extensive manpower to accomplish successfully. When time is constrained, an automatically generated list of candidate patents may decrease search costs and improve search efficiency. We examine whether semantic relations inferred from the pseudo-hierarchy of patent classifications can contribute to the recognition of related patents. We examine a similarity measure for hierarchically-ordered patent classes and subclasses and return a ranked list of candidate patents, using a similarity measure that has demonstrated its effectiveness when applied to WordNet ontologies. We then demonstrate that this ranked list of candidate patents allows us to better constrain the effort needed to examine for prior art violations on a target patent. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Active modeling is required in learning settings to cope with the dynamic evolution of the knowledge, since learners competences evolves over time as they participate in the course activities. Moreover, one of the main issues in a competence based eLearning process is to deliver personalized instructional designs adjusted to both 1) intrinsic characteristics of users (i.e. learning styles) and 2) the desired and achieved competences in the learning process (i.e. specific and generic competences). This delivery includes the adaptation of the content and the activities in a learning scenario based on a dynamic user model that evolves according to user interactions. In this paper, an approach to support Conditional Plans Generation (IMS Learning Designs) in the context of a virtual learning environment is presented. The process is supported by a pervasive usage of standards and specifications (IMS family of specifications) in conjunction with an integral user modeling.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the second workshop of the 'Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations' (MIBBI) consortium held on Dec 1-2, 2010 in Rüdesheim, Germany through the sponsorship of the Beilstein-Institute. MIBBI is an umbrella organization uniting communities developing Minimum Information (MI) checklists to standardize the description of data sets, the workflows by which they were generated and the scientific context for the work. This workshop brought together representatives of more than twenty communities to present the status of their MI checklists and plans for future development. Shared challenges and solutions were identified and the role of MIBBI in MI checklist development was discussed. The meeting featured some thirty presentations, wide-ranging discussions and breakout groups. The top outcomes of the two-day workshop as defined by the participants were: 1) the chance to share best practices and to identify areas of synergy; 2) defining a series of tasks for updating the MIBBI Portal; 3) reemphasizing the need to maintain independent MI checklists for various communities while leveraging common terms and workflow elements contained in multiple checklists; and 4) revision of the concept of the MIBBI Foundry to focus on the creation of a core set of MIBBI modules intended for reuse by individual MI checklist projects while maintaining the integrity of each MI project. In well-defined domains there exist well-accepted criteria for detecting good and bad student solutions. Many ITS implement these criteria characterize solutions and to give immediate feedback. While this has been shown to promote learning, it is not always possible in ill-defined domains that typically lack well-accepted criteria. In this paper we report on the induction of classification rules for student solutions in an ill-defined domain. 1 We compare the viability of classifications using statistical measures with classification trees induced via C4.5 and Genetic programming.

The third international conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI-2008) was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, March 12-15, 2008. The theme of HRI-2008, "living with robots," highlights the importance of the technical and social issues underlying human-robot interaction with companion and assistive robots for long-term use in everyday life and work activities. More than 250 researchers, practitioners, and exhibitors attended the conference, and many more contributed to the conference as authors or reviewers. Clinical guidelines usually need to be adapted to fit local practice before they can be actually used by clinicians. Reasons for adaptation include variations of institution setting such as type of practice and location, availability of resources, differences in patient populations, local policies, and practice patterns. When a guideline is implemented for clinical decision support and integrated with an institution's clinical information system, the data model of the local electronic medical record (EMR) and the data actually collected and stored in it also influence the guideline's adaptation. The purpose of this work is: (1) to characterize a tool-supported process for guideline encoding that addresses local adaptation and EMR integration, and (2) to identify the types of changes in guideline encoding during the local adaptation process. © 2008 The authors and IOS Press.
