Distance learning is a learning style that can overcome the limitation of time and space. Because of the distance, teachers can not handle the student's learning situation, and they do not know whether the student is attentive, drowsy or absent. If teachers can know the student's affective state, they can overcome the difficult. The research applies the image recognition technologies to capture the face images of students when they are learning and analyzes their face features to evaluate the student's affective state by Fuzzy Integral. Finally, teachers can monitor the student's behavior by the detection results on the system interface.

In emergency response organizations with very limited resources, information technologies are not adequately explored. In such organizations, the simple adoption of new information technologies is not productive, as their efficient use depends on many other interrelated technologies. This work describes a model to help understanding these interrelationships. The model allows the cooperative evaluation of an organization through different perspectives. Using the model, an organization can measure its maturity level and guide the investment in emergency response capabilities. The information technology dimension of the model has been applied to the firefight organization in Brazil.

Learner attention affects learning efficiency. However, in many classes, teachers cannot assess the degree of attention of every student. When a teacher is capable of addressing inattentive students immediately, he can avoid situations in which students are inattentive. Many studies have analyzed student attentiveness by the applying of image detection technologies. If this mechanism can be applied to in-class learning, it will help teachers keep students attentive, and reduce teacher load during class. This study mainly applies fuzzy logic analysis of student facial images when participating in class. Applying fuzzy logic can prevent erroneous judgments associated with a single term, and help teachers deal with student attentiveness.

The identification of reliable peripheral biomarkers for clinical diagnosis, patient prognosis, and biological functional studies would allow for access to biological information currently available only through invasive methods. Traditional approaches have so far considered aspects of tissues and biofluid markers independently. Here we introduce an information theoretic framework for biomarker discovery, integrating biofluid and tissue information. This allows us to identify tissue information in peripheral biofluids. We treat tissue-biofluid interactions as an information channel through functional space using 26 proteomes from 45 different sources to determine quantitatively the correspondence of each biofluid for specific tissues via relative entropy calculation of proteomes mapped onto phenotype, function, and drug space. The breadth of biological data collected in the last decade has far outstripped the methods available to process it. To effectively investigate and explore this abundance of data, novel automated collection and analysis approaches must be devised. We have developed a new open software framework, the Open Genomic Analysis Platform (OGAP), to aid in the analysis of genomic data. It is capable of analyzing a variety of data source, and focuses on using information theory to characterize data. The frameworks has is capable of import a variety of genome tied data, and provides custom analysis and visualization of results. We then demonstrate the use of this framework analyzing the Prochlorococcus Marinus organism. We show a strong correlation between the information content of sequence data and up regulation of gene expression during lytic infection.

We describe recruitment and selection procedures of the computer science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that are designed to attract students who are academically talented, financially needy, and diverse. In particular, we address the possible exclusion of underrepresented minority students that could result if standardized test scores are used indiscriminately as metrics of student performance in both recruitment and selection procedures. We describe a "conditional award" process that enables students whose calculus placement is moderately below calculus to competitively apply for and receive scholarships;awards to such students are activated on the condition that they attempt to attain calculus placement prior to matriculation. We present data that demonstrate moderate effectiveness of these methods in fostering diversity among our scholars and reasonably encouraging retention and estimated graduation rates. We discuss areas of improvement for future program years, such as forging new partnerships with local Project Lead The Way high schools to recruit higher numbers of females and minorities, and developing new mentoring opportunities to reduce attrition, especially among underrepresented minority students. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2007.

If the origins of fragments are known in genome sequencing projects, it is straightforward to reconstruct diploid consensus sequences. In reality, however, this is not true. Although there are proposed methods to reconstruct haplotypes from genome sequencing projects, an accuracy assessment is required to evaluate the confidence of the estimated diploid consensus sequences. In this paper, we define the confidence score of diploid consensus sequences. It requires the calculation of the likelihood of an assembly. To calculate the likelihood, we propose a linear time algorithm with respect to the number of polymorphic sites. The likelihood calculation and confidence score are used for further improvements of haplotype estimation in two directions. One direction is that low-scored phases are disconnected. The other direction is that, instead of using nominal frequency 1/2, the haplotype frequency is estimated to reflect the actual contribution of each haplotype. Our method was evaluated on the simulated data whose polymorphism rate (1.2 percent) was based on Ciona intestinalis. As a result, the high accuracy of our algorithm was indicated: The true positive rate of the haplotype estimation was greater than 97 percent. © 2007 IEEE.

Accurate base-assignment in repeat regions of a whole genome shotgun assembly is an unsolved problem. Since reads in repeat regions cannot be easily attributed to a unique location in the genome, current assemblers may place these reads arbitrarily. As a result, the base-assignment error rate in repeats is likely to be much higher than that in the rest of the genome. We developed an iterative algorithm, EULER-AIR, that is able to correct base-assignment errors in finished genome sequences in public databases. The Wolbachia genome is among the best finished genomes. Using this genome project as an example, we demonstrated that EULER-AIR can 1) discover and correct base-assignment errors, 2) provide accurate read assignments, 3) utilize finishing reads for accurate base-assignment and 4) provide guidance for designing finishing experiments. In the genome of Wolbachia, EULER-AIR found 16 positions with ambiguous base-assignment and two positions with erroneous bases. Besides Wolbachia, many other genome sequencing projects have significantly fewer finishing reads and, hence, are likely to contain more base-assignment errors in repeats. We demonstrate that EULER-AIR is a software tool that can be used to find and correct base-assignment errors in a genome assembly project. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel approach to the task of automatic music genre classification which is based on multiple feature vectors and ensemble of classifiers. Multiple feature vectors are extracted from a single music piece. First, three 30-second music segments, one from the beginning, one from the middle and one from end part of a music piece are selected and feature vectors are extracted from each segment. Individual classifiers are trained to account for each feature vector extracted from each music segment. At the classification, the outputs provided by each individual classifier are combined through simple combination rules such as majority vote, max, sum and product rules, with the aim of improving music genre classification accuracy. Experiments carried out on a large dataset containing more than 3,000 music samples from ten different Latin music genres have shown that for the task of automatic music genre classification, the features extracted from the middle part of the music provide better results than using the segments from the beginning or end part of the music. Furthermore, the proposed ensemble approach, which combines the multiple feature vectors, provides better accuracy than using single classifiers and any individual music segment.

With the human genome sequenced, attention has been shifting to proteins and their function. Several technologies including mass spectrometry and gel electrophoresis have traditionally been used to study proteins. These technologies rely on proteins' masses to characterize and/or identify them. Once identified, the discovered proteins' are often analyzed for their functional relevance. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to studying protein function directly, based on protein mass. By analyzing proteins with similar mass ranges (bins), we discovered that certain biological functions are associated with specific mass bins more frequently than would be expected by chance. Biological functional classes found in this manner could be seen across the three examined organisms: human, worm and fly. We found no sequence-based homology across significant mass-function proteins in the three different organisms. This investigation leads to useful property that the mass-based biological functional classes are preserved across the organisms. Thus, this paper describes a potential constraint for evolution of similar function based on mass constraints. Finally, this work yields a roadmap for experimental design for functional exploration of proteomes in mass-based technologies such as gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. ©2007 IEEE.
