Many ethical issues in machine learning are connected to the training data. Online data markets are an important source of training data, facilitating both production and distribution. Recently, a trend has emerged of for-profit "ethical" participants in online data markets. This trend raises a fascinating question: Can online data markets sustainably and efficiently address ethical issues in the broader machine-learning economy? In this work, we study this question in a stylized model of an online data market. We investigate the effects of intervening in the data market to achieve balanced training-data production. The model reveals the crucial role of market conditions. In small and emerging markets, an intervention can drive the data producers out of the market, so that the cost of fairness is maximal. Yet, in large and established markets, the cost of fairness can vanish (as a fraction of overall welfare) as the market grows. Our results suggest that "ethical" online data markets can be economically feasible under favorable market conditions, and motivate more models to consider the role of data production and distribution in mediating the impacts of ethical interventions. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This paper outlines the process of generating a Neo4j graph database powered by Language Models (LLMs). The primary goal is to extract structured information from unstructured data, including user profiles, paper briefs, and Slack messages, and convert them into Cypher queries. The data is then ingested into Neo4j to build a graph database that captures relationships between users, paper, technologies, and messages. A pipeline was developed to automate the process, ensuring accurate entity and relationship extraction using predefined templates. This approach allows for efficient data representation and supports consultancy in managing large datasets by generating insightful visualizations and querying capabilities.

Time-series prediction is increasingly popular in a variety of applications, such as smart factories and smart transportation. Researchers have used various techniques to predict power consumption, but existing models lack discussion of collaborative learning and privacy issues among multiple clients. To address these issues, we propose Multi-Head Heterogeneous Federated Learning (MHHFL) systems that consist of multiple head networks, which independently act as carriers for federated learning. In the federated period, each head network is embedded into 2-dimensional vectors and shared with the centralized source pool. MHHFL then selects appropriate source networks and blends the head networks as knowledge transfer in federated learning. The experimental results show that the proposed MHHFL systems significantly outperform the benchmark and state-of-the-art systems and reduce the prediction error by 24.9% to 94.1%. The ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanisms in the MHHFL (head network embedding and selection mechanisms), which significantly outperforms traditional federated average and random transfer. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Curie: Toward Rigorous and Automated Scientific Experimentation with AI Agents

Scientific experimentation, a cornerstone of human progress, demands rigor in reliability, methodical control, and interpretability to yield meaningful results. Despite the growing capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in automating different aspects of the scientific process, automating rigorous experimentation remains a significant challenge. To address this gap, we propose Curie, an AI agent framework designed to embed rigor into the experimentation process through three key components: an intra-agent rigor module to enhance reliability, an inter-agent rigor module to maintain methodical control, and an experiment knowledge module to enhance interpretability. To evaluate Curie, we design a novel experimental benchmark composed of 46 questions across four computer science domains, derived from influential research papers, and widely adopted open-source projects. Compared to the strongest baseline tested, we achieve a 3.4× improvement in correctly answering experimental questions. Curie is open-sourced at https://***/Just-Curieous/Curie. © 2025, CC0.

LLMs’ sources of knowledge are data snapshots containing factual information about entities collected at different timestamps and from different media types (e.g. wikis, social media, etc.). Such unstructured knowledge is subject to change due to updates through time from past to present. Equally important are the inconsistencies and inaccuracies occurring in different information sources. Consequently, the model’s knowledge about an entity may be perturbed while training over the sequence of snapshots or at inference time, resulting in inconsistent and inaccurate model performance. In this work, we study the appropriateness of Large Language Models (LLMs) as repositories of factual knowledge. We consider twenty-four state-of-the-art LLMs that are either closed-, partially (weights), or fully (weight and training data) open-source. We evaluate their reliability in responding to time-sensitive factual questions in terms of accuracy and consistency when prompts are perturbed. We further evaluate the effectiveness of state-of-the-art methods to improve LLMs’ accuracy and consistency. We then propose "ENtity-Aware Fine-tuning" (ENAF), a soft neurosymbolic approach aimed at providing structured representation of entities during fine-tuning to improve the model’s performance. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV), as a promising paradigm, speeds up the service deployment by separating network functions from proprietary devices and deploying them on common servers in the form of software. Any service in NFV-enabled networks is achieved as a Service Function Chain (SFC) which consists of a series of ordered Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). However, migration of VNFs for more flexible services within a dynamic NFV-enabled network is a key challenge to be addressed. Current VNF migration studies mainly focus on single VNF migration decisions without considering the sharing and concurrent migration of VNF instances. In this paper, we assume that each deployed VNF is used by multiple SFCs and deal with the optimal placement for the contemporaneous migration of VNFs based on the actual network situation. We formalize the VNF migration and SFC reconfiguration problem as a mathematical model, which aims to minimize the VNF migration between nodes or the total number of core changes per node. The approach is a two-stage MILP based on optimal order to solve the reconfiguration. Extensive evaluation shows that the proposed approach can reduce the change in terms of location or number of cores per node in a 6-node and 14-node networks while ensuring network latency compared with the model without reconfiguration. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Organizations are increasingly moving towards the cloud computing paradigm, in which an on-demand access to a pool of shared configurable resources is provided. However, security challenges, which are particularly exacerbated by the multitenancy and virtualization features of cloud computing, present a major obstacle. In particular, sharing of resources among potentially untrusted tenants in access controlled cloud datacenters can result in increased risk of data leakage. To address such risk, we propose an efficient risk-aware sensitive property-driven virtual resource assignment mechanism for cloud datacenters. We have used two information-theoretic measures, i.e., KL-divergence and mutual information, to represent sensitive properties in the dataset. Based on the vulnerabilities of cloud architecture and the sensitive property profile, we have formulated the problem as a cost-drive optimization problem. The problem is shown to be NP-complete. Accordingly, we have proposed two heuristics and presented simulation based performance results for cloud datacenters with multiple sensitivity. © 2025, CC BY.

Modern design of nuclear facilities represents unique challenges: enabling the design of complex advanced concepts, supporting geographically dispersed teams, and supporting first-of-a-kind system development. Errors made early in design can introduce silent errors. These errors can cascade causing unknown risk of complex engineering programs. The Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) program uses digital-engineering principles for design, procurement, construction, and operation to reduce risk and improve efficiencies. Digital engineering is an integrated, model-based approach which connects proven digital tools such as building information management (BIM), project controls, and systems-engineering software tools into a cohesive environment. The VTR team hypothesizes using these principals can lead to similar risk and cost reductions and schedule efficiencies observed in other engineering industries. This research investigates the use of a digital engineering ecosystem in the design of a 300-MWt sodium-cooled fast reactor. This ecosystem was deployed to over 200 engineers and used to deliver the conceptual design of the VTR. We conclude that initial results show significant reductions in user latency (1000x at peak use), the possibility of direct finite-element-analysis (FEA) integrations to computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and nuclear reactor system design descriptions (SDDs) that we can fully link throughout design in data-driven requirements-management software.
