For microscopic cells images, cells’ morphologies are widely varied among different imaging modalities and staining methods. For fluorescence microscopy images, Poisson noises present in images due to the lightening, causing photobleaching, which makes it challenging in analysis with the deep learning models. Traditionally, median filtering can be applied to the original image for denoising, however, it also results in a blurry image, which is harmful to segmentation. In this study, the Haar Wavelet Transform is used to alleviate the photobleaching problem for cell segmentation, integrated to the framework without interfering with feature extraction by the backbone model. For our experiments, instance segmentation for fluorescence-stained cells was performed based on U-Net architecture with the method of gradient flow tracking proposed by Cellpose. And the Haar wavelet downsampling is embedded in the skip connections to verify if it can improve the segmentation performance for fluorescence images. The experimental results show that the approach of Haar wavelet downsampling embedded in the skip connections achieve superior performance among the other settings. Compared with the performance of the baseline model, the performance of the proposed model reached 0.732 in F1-score, which surpassed the one of baseline model (0.6341) by almost 0.1.

Using surface resonance (SPR) as a sensitivity enhancer, this work describes the development of a transmissive multimode optical fiber sensor with a gold (Au) thin film that measures glucose concentration. The fiber's cladding was initially removed, and an Au layer was then sputtered onto its surface to simultaneously excite SPR and reflect light, making the SPR sensor extremely sensitive to changes in the environment's refractive index. A range of glucose concentrations, from 0.0001 to 0.5000 g/ml, were tested on the sensor. A maximum sensitivity of 161.302 nm/(g/mL) was attained for the lowest glucose concentration, while the highest concentration yielded a sensitivity of 312.000 nm/(g/mL). The proposed sensor's compact size, high sensitivity, good stability and practicality make it a promising candidate for a range of applications, including detecting diabetes.

Pneumonia is one of the top causes of death in Romania and early detection of this disease improves the recovery chances and shortens the length of hospitalization. In this work, we develop a solution for automatic pneumonia detection based on convolutional neural networks. Four network models are investigated. They are trained on 4.163 images from a public dataset and tested on 530 images. The best results are obtained by one of the proposed models conducting to a sensitivity of 98.72%, an accuracy of 89.81%, and ROC 93.46%. Thus, this research proposes a lightweight screening tool that can help triaging the patients with pneumonia.

It is necessary to create a new Electronic Voting System (EVS) that can offer greater security, speed, and accuracy than the EVS used in the past.
