Participatory budgeting refers to the practice of allocating public resources by collecting and aggregating individual preferences. Most existing studies in this field often assume an additive utility function, where each individual holds a private utility for each candidate project, and the total utility of a set of funded projects is simply the sum of the utilities of all projects. We argue that this assumption does not always hold in reality. For example, building two playgrounds in the same neighborhood does not necessarily lead to twice the utility of building a single playground. To address this, we extend the existing study by proposing a submodular participatory budgeting problem, assuming that the utility function of each individual is a monotone and submodular function over funded projects. We propose and examine three preference elicitation methods and analyze their performances in terms of distortion. Notably, if the utility function is additive, our aggregation rule designed for threshold approval votes achieves a better distortion than the state-of-the-art approach. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Energy conservation is an indispensable aspect of the protocols designed for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The communication protocols for WSN fall mainly under two categories: centralized and distributed. Centralized protocols are not feasible for real-world WSNs as the network can span across large areas where most of the nodes cannot directly communicate with the base station (BS). The routing issues in such networks can be addressed using multi-hop protocols. However, the process of BS guided clustering in such methods cannot be performed. Distributed clustering methods that minimize the intervention of BS in clustering can provide feasible solutions in such cases, but the energy expenditure is considerably high. This paper, hence, proposes a hybrid clustering based routing protocol for large WSN that employs certain aspects of centralized as well as that of distributed protocols. Experimental evaluation of the proposed protocol in terms of network lifetime gives promising results that clearly indicate the energy efficiency and consistency of the proposed work in different scenarios. The proposed work can prove beneficial in real-life scenarios where the deployed nodes are far away from the BS. © 2025 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a promising enabling technology for the next-generation wireless networks, as it complements radio-frequency (RF)-based communications by providing wider bandwidth, higher data rates, and immunity to interference from electromagnetic sources. However, due to its unique characteristics, VLC is highly sensitive to the line-of-sight (LoS) blockage. Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been proposed as an innovative solution that dynamically reconfigures the wireless environment. The present contribution proposes a two-stage resource management framework in an indoor VLC system: In the first stage, a maximum possible fairness (MPF) algorithm is presented in order to maximize the fairness amongst the users. In the second stage, deep Q-learning is exploited in order to maximize the overall spectral efficiency (SE). The corresponding numerical results have shown that the proposed DQL-MPF framework exhibits superior performance in terms of both the overall SE and Jain's Fair Index, achieved at a fast convergence rate. More specifically, when the noise power is high and the number of users is relatively large, the DQL-MPF algorithm achieves a more than tenfold overall SE compared to the Baseline scheme. Moreover, the synergy between the MPF and the DQL algorithms is investigated. To this end, we demonstrate that the MPF algorithm maximizes the fairness amongst the users while the DQL algorithm maximizes the overall SE and improves the robustness against the noise. Our results also highlight the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in leveraging the increasing number of IRS elements for optimized performance. © 2023 The Authors.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disease that is often an undetected cause of death. It is generally diagnosed with polysomnography, which can be costly and uncomfortable. To solve this issue, we suggest a website for detecting sleep apnea that uses user-provided data such as the Berlin questionnaire, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), body measurements, Body Mass Index (BMI), age, and gender. The purpose of this work is to categorize sleep apnea based on the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) as normal, mild, moderate, or severe. This classification is carried out using a deep learning model, TabNet which suits the best to process the text input. It could be useful for people who feel they have sleep apnea, allowing them to take the essential steps toward a formal diagnosis and therapy. However, this aids in early diagnosis by indicating the stage of the disease, and users are recommended to check with healthcare specialists for a definitive diagnosis. For feature selection, nature-inspired Cat Swarm optimization is applied. The TabNet is trained on a dataset that includes these characteristics as well as the AHI, a common metric for determining the severity of sleep apnea. The algorithm uses these inputs to forecast the likelihood of having sleep apnea: normal, mild, moderate, or severe. The developed TabNet Model is compared with the Convolution Neural Network (CNN) and the results are showcased. To summarize, this approach is a revolutionary technique for sleep apnea detection using Cat Swarm Optimization. It promises to give a more accessible and cost-effective solution for people who feel they have this illness by utilizing user-generated data and deep learning algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

This work is a full research-to-practice paper that describes a predictive method to improve the prediction of student test scores. Predicting student test scores is difficult. However, doing so can improve education greatly by improving advising, scheduling, tutoring assignment and other educational processes. This research extends previous research by using a domain space reduction technique to improve accuracy. Factor Analysis is used to reduce the number of domain attributes for improving the accuracy of a Neural Network to predict student test scores. In this research datasets for Mathematics and Language of high school student test scores were used. Test scores were predicted using a Neural Network computing the Mean Absolute Error as a measurement of accuracy. The datasets have 30 domain attributes each. Factor Analysis was used to reduce the domain size from between 1 to 29, each time using it to train the Neural Network. Because the Mean Absolute Error may vary depending upon which records in the dataset are used for training versus testing, 50 trials of each dataset size were executed producing an Average Mean Absolute Error for each domain size. A statistical test was used to show statistical significance between the Neural Network without Factor Analysis and the Neural Network with varying domain sizes using Factor Analysis. Results were very promising and correspond to previous research that used Principal Component Analysis. Numerous domain sizes had significantly better Average Mean Absolute Errors than the accuracy of the Neural Network without Factor Analysis. This research shows that reducing the domain size using Factor Analysis can greatly improve the accuracy of Neural Networks when predicting student test scores. The best improvements occurred when domain sizes were very small ranging from 2 to 6. Domain reduction techniques, such as Factor Analysis, have been shown to improve predictive models for student test score prediction. Future research

Real-time social interactions and multi-streaming are two critical features of live streaming services. In this paper, we formulate a new fundamental service query, Social-aware Diverse and Preferred Organization Query (SDSQ), that jointly selects a set of diverse and preferred live streaming channels and a group of socially tight viewers for organization of a live multi-streaming soiree. We prove that SDSQ is NP-hard and inapproximable within any factor, and design SDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm with a guaranteed error bound. Moreover, we study SDSQ-T, a special case of SDSQ, where the social graph is a threshold graph, and propose TDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm without any error to SDSQ-T. We propose two pruning strategies, PCP and CDP to boost SDSSel and TDSSel. We further propose a more challenging but practical service query, Generalized Social-aware Maximum Preferred and Diverse Query (GSPQ), a generalization of SDSQ. We design GPDSel, a 4-approximation algorithm for GSPQ with a guaranteed error bound. We propose a strategy to improve the approximation ratios of the proposed algorithms. A user study on Twitch validates SDSQ, and the large-scale experiments on real datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over several baselines for live-streaming services. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

The advent of programmable Wireless Environments (PWEs) has transformed the wireless propagation phenomenon into a software-defined resource, leveraging Software-defined metasurfaces (SDMs). These new technologies have shown that wireless waves can be routed within a space, contrary to the regular, chaotic wireless propagation, yielding considerable benefits to communication efficiency, and even completely new applications. A new topic has risen, in the context of modeling these capabilities as network resources, and allocating them to users. In this context, the present paper contributes HERA, a heuristic resource allocator that receives a setup with users and SDMs as input, and produces the necessary configuration of the latter, for efficient shared performance. Simulation results demonstrate considerable efficiency in this task, while the heuristic nature of HERA sets the basis for a flexible definition of complex user objectives in the future. © 2024 IEEE.

Internet of Things (IoT) produces massive amounts of data that need to be processed and saved securely. The strong features of Blockchain makes it as a best candidate for storing the data received from IoT sensors. However, there is a need of concern to take care of the challenges associated with both IoT and blockchain paradigms. Firstly, the enormous amount of data should be effortlessly handled by Blockchain network, without adding much complexity. Secondly, the heterogeneous nature of data that are received from various IoT Sensors should be stored within the blockchain. In this paper, a conceptual framework based on Multimodal Machine Learning (MML) algorithm is proposed as an interface between the IoT sensors and Blockchain networks. The MML algorithm is used to understand the different modalities of the data and provides a way to manage the heterogeneity in that data. The MML algorithms provides an intelligent data processing that allows for real-time data storage in the blockchain networks. The conceptual frame assumes that audio, video, and text are the three types of data as received from IoT. These inputs are processed in simplistic Recurrent neural network RNN that acts as MML and then passed to Blockchain networks for secure storage. Simulation of the above said conceptual framework is performed assuming all other relevant requirements of IoT, MML and Blockchain are taken into account with default parameters and values. The results obtained provide a promising note for future scope in this direction. © 2024 IEEE.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) data are susceptible to artifacts, such as lapses in concentration or poor imagination, which can significantly impact the accuracy of disease diagnosis in e-health applications. To mitigate this issue, the use of machine learning (ML) and potentially artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to accurately identify outliers becomes crucial. Unlike many AI methods that incorporate unnecessary or redundant input variables, our study focuses on detecting anomalous values in EEG data through the K nearest neighbor (KNN) process and Euclidean distance metric. Our proposed unsupervised non-parametric algorithm, known as the smart KNN outlier detector (SKOD), eliminates the need for initial parameter configurations such as the number of neighbors (K), while achieving high performance. Evaluation of SKOD using real EEG data from 140 trials demonstrated sensitivity and specificity exceeding 60%, with nearly perfect accuracy in detecting outliers reaching close to 100%. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.
