In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFEC) is becoming a key trend and an essential need. A grand challenge is to provide in-flight connectivity in high altitudes, and particularly in isolated locations, such as the oceans, where establishing an air-to-ground link is not possible. Aeronautical Ad-Hoc Networking (AANET) intends to cope with this challenge by forming a network of airplanes having air-to-air (A2A) connections. However, the dynamic nature of such a network is likely to lead to unstable connections. The primary cause of the majority of these stability issues is known to be poor clustering of aircrafts. Consequently, concentrating on aircraft clustering and making them more stable can improve connection. This paper aims to unveil the benefits of density-based clustering to improve the AANET performance. To do so, the paper employs a multi-feature DBSCAN algorithm for the clustering problem that exploits several features of real flight datasets, including latitude, longitude, altitude, direction, and velocity. Instead of a typical distance metric such as Euclidean or Haversine, the technique produces a precomputed distance matrix and feeds it to DBSCAN. This method also includes a weighted scheme to reflect the relative importance of each component of the distance calculation. Simulations under OMNET++ by using real-time flight data point out that packet delivery ratio and end-to-end latency of the state of the art clustering-based AANET solutions can be improved by 40 % and 30 %, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves a 20% reduction in cluster changes and the number of clusters. © 2022 IEEE.

Policy gradient algorithms have been shown to converge to the optimal controller in a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) design problem. Calculating policy gradients using the true system such as for a robot may, however, be costly. We consider a formulation in which an ample number of gradient calculations from a proxy or approximate system such as a simulator are mixed with gradient calculations from the true system at a few time steps. Under the simplifying assumption of exact gradient calculation, we show that policy gradient in this framework can still converge to a neighborhood of the desired optimal controller. In this sense, it can reduce both the burden and cost of experimenting only on the true system and potentially obtain a less conservative controller than a purely robust control approach that relies only on the proxy system for designing the controller. © 2024 IEEE.

We introduce a new variant of the art gallery problem that comes from safety issues. In this variant we are not interested in guard sets of smallest cardinality, but in guard sets with largest possible distances between these guards. To the best of our knowledge, this variant has not been considered before. We call it the Dispersive Art Gallery Problem. In particular, in the dispersive art gallery problem we are given a polygon P and a real number , and want to decide whether P has a guard set such that every pair of guards in this set is at least a distance of apart. In this paper, we study the vertex guard variant of this problem for the class of polyominoes. We consider rectangular visibility and distances as geodesics in the L1-metric. Our results are as follows. We give a (simple) thin polyomino such that every guard set has minimum pairwise distances of at most 3. On the positive side, we describe an algorithm that computes guard sets for simple polyominoes that match this upper bound, i.e., the algorithm constructs worst-case optimal solutions. We also study the computational complexity of computing guard sets that maximize the smallest distance between all pairs of guards within the guard sets. We prove that deciding whether there exists a guard set realizing a minimum pairwise distance for all pairs of guards of at least 5 in a given polyomino is NP-complete. We were also able to find an optimal dynamic programming approach that computes a guard set that maximizes the minimum pairwise distance between guards in tree-shaped polyominoes, i.e., computes optimal solutions;due to space constraints, details can be found in the full version of our paper [42]. Because the shapes constructed in the NP-hardness reduction are thin as well (but have holes), this result completes the case for thin polyominoes. © Christian Rieck and Christian Scheffer.

For the application of industrial robots, positioning accuracy is a significant indicator of their performance. Aiming at the issues of low positioning accuracy, the calibration techniques are employed to obtain the real kinematic parameters for effectively enhancing its accuracy. However, in practical scenarios, for the restriction of the robot workspace, the samples collected during the robot calibration process cannot cover the entire space of the entire space, resulting in an impact on data integrity. To address the above issues, we develop a calibrator integrating the MCS method (measurement configurations selection) and LM algorithm (Levenberg-Marquardt) with a spatial line constraint (LMLC), which contains three-fold: a) selecting a set of most representative measurement configurations according to the observability index for enhancing the stability of calibration results;b) develop an LM algorithm with line constraint to solve the problem of spatial restriction of robot sampling;c) presenting a robot calibrator that combines MCS and LMLC for efficiently improving the robot calibration accuracy. Experiments illustrate that the MCS-LMLC calibrator outperforms state-of-the-art calibrators on an industrial robot's calibration accuracy and computational efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

The authors investigate the potential of pulsed power technology in recycling of E-waste. Applying the pulsed discharge can separate composite materials into plastic and metal. In this study, pulsed discharge was applied to indium tin oxide (ITO) coated plastic films. We used two electrode types: rod-To-rod electrode and a pair of flat plate electrodes to investigate the effect of electrode structure on the metal removal area in detail. A series of single pulse discharges were applied at various electrode distances. As a result, it was revealed that metal can be removed over a wide range by the pulsed discharge using a pair of flat plate electrodes. When the gap between the electrodes was 30 mm, the removal area by the flat plate electrodes was approximately 3.4 times that by the rod electrodes. Analysis of the current density also revealed that the metal removal area was greatly affected by the current density. © 2024 Eindhoven University of Technology.

Due to the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources, congestion problems are already emerging in Dutch distribution grids. The available flexibility o f assets in the built environment could have the potential to reduce congestion if prosumers are properly incentivized by distribution grid operators (DSOs). However, it is not yet clear what (combinations of) flexibility a ctivation mechanisms will be effective for congestion management in Dutch Distribution grids. To shed light on this issue, the GO-e consortium aims at performing large-scale agent-based simulations of up to 120 low-voltage networks and a large variety of possible instruments and scenarios. For this reason, we developed a novel scalable time-discrete simulation framework for distributed agent-based simulations of energy systems. We demonstrate the framework on a case-study in which we assess the effectiveness of a dynamic bandwidth tariff instrument on overloading problems in a low-voltage network containing solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps. It was shown that a dynamic bandwidth tariff can successfully resolve forecasted congestion if the associated costs are high enough compared to the day-ahead prices. However, the resulting load shifting can cause new congestion intra-day aswell. © The Institution of engineering and Technology 2023.

During drilling operations for oil and gas, swab and surge pressure occur while tripping in and out of a wellbore. High tripping speed can lead to fracturing the well's formation, whereas low tripping speed can increase non-productive time and cost. Hence, there is a need to predict surge/swab pressure accurately. Several analytical and machine learning models have already been developed to predict surge/swab pressure. However, these existing models use numerical calculations to generate the data. This paper explored four supervised machine learning models, i.e., Linear Regression, XGBoost, Feedforward Neural Network (FFNN), and Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM). In this study, actual field data from the Norwegian Continental Shelf provided by an Exploration & Production company is utilized to develop the four machine learning models. The results indicated that XGBoost was the best-performing model with an R2-score of 0.99073. Therefore, this trained model can be applied during a tripping operation to regulate tripping speed where repetitive surge/swab pressure calculation is needed. © 2022 IEEE.

Residential prosumers enable the peer-to-peer energy transfer to prompt the management of local energy resources for the benefit of their neighbourhood. This encourages the researchers to develop energy management processes for residential communities. However, existing methods perform centralized or distributed management process through a community level central controller, which makes them vulnerable to single point failure. In contrast, a fully distributed community energy management is proposed here by not using any central controller. Here, all homes solve their respective multi-objective energy management problem in parallel by exchanging their local P2P energy purchase/sell bids with the neighbours. The optimal conditions are obtained through consensus by using alternating direction method of multiplier. The home optimization problem aims to minimize energy cost and also its peak demand by regulating the operation of flexible appliances and battery. The performance characterization of proposed method is done by providing an insight on its superiority over existing methods. © 2023 IEEE.
