Multilabel learning is an emergent topic that addresses the challenge of associating multiple labels with a single instance simultaneously. Multilabel datasets often exhibit high dimensionality with noisy, irrelevant, and redundant features. In recent years, multilabel feature selection (MLFS) has gained prominence as a crucial and emerging machine learning task due to its ability to handle such data effectively. However, existing approaches for MLFS often prioritize top-ranked features based on intrinsic data criteria, disregarding relationships within the feature subset. Additionally, compared with conventional feature selection, multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have not been widely explored in the context of MLFS. This study aims to address these gaps by proposing a multimodal multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (MMOEA) called MMDE_SICD which incorporates a preelimination scheme, an improved initialization scheme, an exploration scheme inspired by genetic operations and a statistically inspired crowding distance scheme. The results show that the proposed MMDE_SICD algorithm can outperform a variety of MOEAs and MMOEAs as well as conventional MLFS algorithms. Notably, this study is the first of its kind to consider MLFS as a multimodal multiobjective problem. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper proposes the Modified Light GBM to classify the Malicious Users (MUs) and legitimate Secondary Users (SUs) in the cognitive-radio network. The proposed method is to avoid the consequences of malicious users in Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) without the detection of MUs. The method is tested against the occurrence of Always No Malicious User (ANMU), always yes malicious user (AYMU), the Random Malicious User (RMU), and Opposite Malicious User (OMU) transmitting spectrum sensing data to the Fusion Center (FC) by normal secondary users. The efficiency of the proposed method is expressed via simulations and compared with other existing methods. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. This study explores the development of a self-driving car using a combination of deep learning (DL), machine learning (ML), computer vision (CV), and convolutional neural networks (CNN). The proposed system aims to simulate human-like decision making in response to external conditions encountered during autonomous driving. The approach involves real-time on-road testing and a self-training mechanism to enable the car to continuously learn and adapt. Effective monitoring of the environment over a large area will require mobilization of a considerable amount of information. Otherwise, the use of traditional methods will prove to be costly and would take up so much time. Also, assessing the land cover changes between two times is one of the other methods which can be adopted to measure the environmental sustainability. Using ML techniques for predictive modeling in remote sensing has emerged as a useful approach in solving some of the environmental and climatic challenges. This research proposes a novel method in remote sensing image-based climate detection utilizing cloud computing and machine learning algorithms. Here, the cloud computing module is used in the collection of remote sensing images for the detection of climate changes. Then, the collected image is processed for noise removal as well as normalization. The processed image is segmented, and features are extracted utilizing a fuzzy K-clustering-based contour Gaussian model with graph cut Boltzmann CNN. Experimental analysis is carried out for various remote sensing-based climate change datasets in terms of training accuracy, random precision, AUC, recall, and F-measure. The proposed technique obtained 97% of training accuracy, 95% of random precision, 96% of recall, 93% of AUC, and 94% of F-measure. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Multi-scale feature fusion for facial expression recognition

As an important computer vision task that can be used in many areas, facial expression recognition (FER) has been widely studied which much progress has been obtained especially when deep learning (DL) approaches have been introduced in FER. However, existing methods are restricted to extracting localized information or utilizing attention mechanism to focus on the region most relevant to the emotion, possibly resulting in errors in facial expression interpretation. Moreover, the inconsistency of image sizes in the wild FER datasets further increases the difficulty of the FER task. To address these issues, we propose a multi-scale feature fusion (MSFF) for FER. Specifically, our method first extracts features from facial images using multi-scale feature extraction to obtain rich multi-dimensional information. Meanwhile, extensive feature extraction at different scales is achieved by expanding the receptive field of the model, which provides the basis for more detailed analysis of facial expressions. Eventually, features at different scales are fused to enhance their synergistic effect. Subsequently, the adaptive extraction of comprehensive and valuable information from the fused features is performed, optimizing the performance of expression recognition. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on in-the-wild datasets. Pruning is a major research field in neural networks, enhancing their efficiency and generalization. The field of pruning approaches in genetic programming (GP) is continually evolving, with researchers actively exploring new techniques and approaches to optimise the performance of GP models. This research introduces a novel pruning algorithm for Genetic Programming-based Symbolic Regression (GPSR). The proposed method employs a weighting mechanism to identify and filter out unimportant subtrees in each generation. To achieve this, the method arranges all subtrees linearly and assigns weights to each subtree and terminal. It then uses Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) to optimize these weights, enabling the identification of unimportant subtrees and terminals for effective pruning. The algorithm’s effectiveness was evaluated using ten regression datasets, including high-dimensional and complex feature sets. Furthermore, comparisons were made with two other algorithms to evaluate its performance. The results indicate that the proposed approach not only achieves better learning and generalisation performance but also generates smaller trees compared to standard GP, thereby improving interpretability. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The Sign Language Recognition System has been designed to capture video input, process it to detect hand gestures, and translate these gestures into readable text. The project consists of several key components and steps: Video Processing: Using OpenCV, the system captures frames from the video input. MediaPipe processes these frames to detect and track hand landmarks in real time. OpenCV capabilities allow for efficient frame extraction and basic image processing tasks such as resizing and normalization. Hand Detection and Tracking: MediaPipe pre-trained models identify and track hand movements within the video frames. The accurate detection and tracking of the hand movements are critical for the subsequent recognition of the sign language gestures. Sign Language Recognition: The core system is the deep learning model, trained using the TensorFlow and Keras on a dataset of sign language gestures. The model learns to classify the detected hand movements into corresponding sign language characters or words. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are typically used for task due to their effectiveness in image recognition tasks. Text Display: Once the system recognizes the signs, it converts them into text and displays the output. This can be done through a console output or a graphical user interface (GUI) built with Tkinter. The GUI provides a user friendly experience, allowing users to see the translated text in real-time. © 2025 IEEE.
