Ensemble object detectors have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in enhancing prediction accuracy and uncertainty quantification. However, their widespread adoption is hindered by significant computational and storage demands, limiting their feasibility in resource-constrained settings. To overcome this, researchers have focused on distilling the knowledge from ensemble object detectors into a single model. In this article, we introduce probabilization based ensemble distillation (ProbED), an innovative ensemble distillation framework that consolidates knowledge from multiple object detectors into a single, resource-efficient model. Unlike traditional ensemble distillation methods that average the outputs of subteachers, ProbED captures comprehensive outcome distributions from all subteachers, providing a more nuanced approach to knowledge transfer. ProbED employs knowledge probabilization to achieve a sophisticated and refined aggregation of teacher knowledge, including feature knowledge, semantic knowledge, and localization knowledge, resulting in dual improvements in prediction accuracy and uncertainty quantification for the student model. In particular, ProED's novel knowledge probabilization-based approach to aggregating teacher knowledge is inspired by our empirical observations, which demonstrate that knowledge probabilization excels in effectively representing uncertainty, improving prediction, and facilitating robust knowledge transfer. Furthermore, we introduce a random smoothing perturbation technique to modify inputs within ProbED, further enhancing the distillation process. Extensive experiments highlight ProbED's ability to significantly enhance the prediction accuracy and uncertainty quantification of various object detectors, demonstrating its superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art techniques. © 2024 IEEE.

Drone Detection and Tracking using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks from Real-time CCTV Footage

Drones are flying objects that may be controlled remotely or programmed to do a wide range of tasks, including aerial photography, videography, surveys, crop and animal monitoring, search and rescue missions, package delivery, and military operations. Unrestrained use, however, can pose a significant threat to safety, privacy, and security through eavesdropping, flying close to prohibited locations, interfering with public events, and delivering illicit items. Hence, real-time drone detection and tracking are indispensable and appropriate measures. This study developed real-time drone detection and tracking using the most efficient deep-learning approaches. The models were fine-tuned first to suit the required purpose and yield the desired outcome. The performance of the developed system was better than that of earlier endeavors in terms of accuracy and loss. Of the seven fined-tuned models, the Xception model constantly rendered the maximum accuracy with negligible loss. The model outperformed other state-of-the-art architectures, exhibiting an accuracy and loss of 99.18% and 3.83, respectively. Researchers have recently created several deep learning strategies for various tasks, and facial recognition has made remarkable progress in employing these techniques. Face recognition is a noncontact, nonobligatory, acceptable, and harmonious biometric recognition method with a promising national and social security future. The purpose of this paper is to improve the existing face recognition algorithm, investigate extensive data-driven face recognition methods, and propose a unique automated face recognition methodology based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) and the center symmetric multivariable local binary pattern (CS-MLBP). To begin, this paper employs the center symmetric multivariant local binary pattern (CS-MLBP) algorithm to extract the texture features of the face, addressing the issue that C2DPCA (column-based two-dimensional principle component analysis) does an excellent job of removing the global characteristics of the face but struggles to process the local features of the face under large samples. The extracted texture features are combined with the international features retrieved using C2DPCA to generate a multifeatured face. The proposed method, GAN-CS-MLBP, syndicates the power of GAN with the robustness of CS-MLBP, resulting in an accurate and efficient face recognition system. Deep learning algorithms, mainly neural networks, automatically extract discriminative properties from facial images. The learned features capture low-level information and high-level meanings, permitting the model to distinguish among dissimilar persons more successfully. To assess the proposed technique’s GAN-CS-MLBP performance, extensive experiments are performed on benchmark face recognition datasets such as LFW, YTF, and CASIA-WebFace. Giving to the findings, our method exceeds state-of-the-art facial recognition systems in terms of recognition accuracy and resilience. FERMixNet: An Occlusion Robust Facial Expression Recognition Model with Facial Mixing Augmentation and Mid-Level Representation Learning

Facial expressions can provide a better understanding of people's mental status and attitudes towards specific things. However, facial occlusion in real world is an unfavorable phenomenon that greatly affects the performance of facial expression recognition models. Recent works addressing the occlusion problem have primarily relied on attention mechanisms or occlusion discarding methods that focus on non-occluded regions of the face. However, these methods have not achieved a good balance between occlusion robustness and model efficiency. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient model, called FERMixNet, for occluded facial expression recognition. The model incorporates a novel facial mixing augmentation strategy (FERMix) that generates new training samples by simulating real-world facial occlusion and preserving high expression-related semantic information. By co-training the original and newly generated samples, the model's occlusion robustness is improved without increasing its complexity during inference. Additionally, to further enhance the model's occlusion robustness, we include mid-level representation learning in the network to learn the discriminative non-occluded local features of the samples with low computational cost. Extensive experiments on four public facial occlusion datasets: Occlusion-RAF-DB, Occlusion-FERPlus and FED-RO show that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art results which demonstrates the good robustness of our method for occluded facial expression recognition. Meanwhile, the proposed model also achieves state-of-the-art results on the in-the-wild facial expression datasets RAF-DB, AffectNet-8, and AffectNet-7. It proves that the proposed model has good application prospects in real world. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

PLD-Det: plant leaf disease detection in real time using an end-to-end neural network approach based on improved YOLOv7

In order to maintain sustainable agriculture, it is vital to monitor plant health. Since all species of plants are prone to characteristic diseases, it necessitates regular surveillance to search for any symptoms, which is utterly challenging and time-consuming. Besides, farmers may struggle to identify the type of plant disease and its potential symptoms. Hence, the interest in research like image-based computer-aided automated plant leaf disease detection by analyzing the early symptoms has increased enormously. However, limitations in the plant leaf image database, for instance, unfitting backgrounds, blurry images, and so on, sometimes cause underprivileged feature extraction, misclassification, and overfitting issues in existing models. As a result, we have proposed a real-time plant leaf disease detection architecture incorporating proposed PLD-Det model, which is based on improved YOLOv7 with the intention of assisting farmers while reducing the issues in existing models. The architecture has been trained on the widely used PlantVillage dataset, which resulted in an accuracy of 98.53%. Furthermore, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values have been analyzed as a unified measure of feature significance. According to the experimental findings, the proposed PLD-Det model, which is an improved YOLOv7 architecture, outperformed the original YOLOv7 model in test accuracy by approximately 4%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

The need for renewable energy access has led to the use of variable input converter approaches because renewable energy sources often generate electricity in an unpredictable manner. A high-performance multi-input boost converter is developed to provide the necessary output voltage and power while accommodating variations in input sources. This converter is specifically designed for the efficient usage of renewable energy. The proposed architecture integrates three separate unidirectional input power sources: photovoltaics, fuel cells, and storage system batteries. The architecture has five switches, and the implementation of each switch in the converter is achieved by applying the calculated duty ratios in various operating states. The closed-loop response of the converter with a proportional-integral (PI) controller-based switching system is examined by analyzing the Matlab-Simulink model utilizing a proportional-integral derivative (PID) tuner. The controller can deliver the desired output voltage of 400 V and an average power of 2 kW while exhibiting low switching transient effects. Therefore, the proposed multi-input interleaved boost converter demonstrates robust results for real-time applications by effectively harnessing renewable power sources.

LesionAid: vision transformers-based skin lesion generation and classification – A practical review

Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of human cancer. It is recognized mainly visually, beginning with clinical screening and continuing with the dermoscopic examination, histological assessment, and specimen collection. Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) perform highly segregated and potentially universal tasks against a classified fine-grained object. This study suggests a novel multi-class prediction framework that uses ViT and ViTGAN to categories skin lesions. To address the class disparity, GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) based on vision transformers are used. The framework comprises four main phases: ViTGANs, Image processing, and explainable AI. Phase 1 consists of generating synthetic images using ViTGAN to balance all the classes in the dataset. To enhance the amount of the data, the second phase involves using various morphological processes and data augmentation techniques. In phases three and four, a ViT model for edge computing systems that can recognize patterns and classify skin lesions from the user's skin that is visible in the picture is developed. In phase 3, after classifying the lesions into the desired class with ViT, we will use explainable AI (XAI) that leads to more explainable results (using activation maps, etc.) while ensuring high predictive accuracy. The results demonstrate that the model used for generating synthetic images has achieved an FID score of 13.32 and the ViT model has achieved 99.2% as its training accuracy and 97.4% as its validation accuracy. The whole framework is compared with the existing frameworks for skin lesion detection. And explainable AI (XAI) is used in the proposed framework in order to increase model transparency and boost trust among users by illustrating the main factors affecting predictions.
