Co-clustering method for cold start issue in collaborative filtering movie recommender system

Recommender systems play an essential role in decision-making in the information age by reducing information overload via retrieving the most relevant information in various applications. They also present great opportunities and challenges for business, government, education, and other fields. The cold start problem is a significant issue in these systems. If recommender systems fail to provide satisfactory personalized recommendations for new users, the user’s trust can easily be lost. Hence, in this paper, using co-clustering and utilizing user demographic information and the behavioral history of users, a solution to this critical issue for recommending movies is introduced. In the proposed method, in addition to dealing with the problem of relative cold start, the problem of absolute cold start is also addressed. The proposed method was evaluated via two RMSE and MAE criteria, which accordingly has achieved 0.85 and 0.49 on the Movielens dataset and 1.05 and 0.6 on the EachMovie dataset, respectively, according to the number of comments that Cold Start users have registered. Moreover, it achieved 0.9 and 0.55 on the Movielens dataset and 1.42 and 0.89 on the EachMovie dataset, respectively, according to the number of registered comments for the cold start items. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Deep learning has transformed medical imaging by significantly improving accuracy and efficiency in image processing tasks such as disease detection, segmentation, and classification. This paper explores the role of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), and other advanced architectures in enhancing image interpretation across various medical imaging modalities. By analyzing MRI, CT, and ultrasound data, this study demonstrates the efficacy of deep learning in automating critical diagnostic tasks, reducing human error, and improving patient outcomes. Developing intelligent negotiation dialogue systems that resolve conflicts and promote equitable, inclusive, and sustainable outcomes is at the forefront of advancing automated negotiation technology for social good. Negotiation involves balancing cooperation and competition to maximize value without causing offense. Using polite language fosters mutual understanding and creates a respectful and collaborative environment essential for successful negotiations in various domains. Considering this, in this paper, we propose a polite negotiation dialogue system, GENTEEL-NEGOTIATOR for social good applications to boost the overall quality of negotiation outcomes. We focus on developing a negotiation dialogue system for two key application areas, namely tourism and e-commerce. We begin by curating a unique negotiation dialogue dataset, NEGOCHAT for tourism. We further enrich the NEGOCHAT and Integrative Negotiation dataset (IND) for e-commerce with various negotiation strategies. These datasets are then used to develop the GENTEEL-NEGOTIATOR, leveraging the Large Language Model (LLM) and mixture-of-expert (MoE)-based reinforcement learning approach. The proposed MoE-based method employs heuristic experts dedicated to negotiation, politeness, and dialogue coherence to facilitate the learning of diverse semantics by analyzing the dialogue context. A novel reward function with negotiation strategy congruence, politeness, dialogue coherence, and engagingness rewards is designed to guide the policy's learning for generating responses. Automatic and human evaluations on NEGOCHAT and IND datasets validate the effectiveness of GENTEEL-NEGOTIATOR in generating polite responses during negotiation while maintaining conversation goals, including coherence and engagingness. The rise of smart cities is directly connected to the increasing use of vehicles. The growing vehicle utilization has driven the emergence of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), facilitating instant information exchange among vehicles. The system provides essential information regarding road conditions, traffic patterns, and more relevant data. VANETs encompass two fundamental categories of communication exchanges, namely Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I). V2I technology facilitates the integration of cars and transportation infrastructure, enabling effective communication between vehicles and infrastructure. Nevertheless, the potential of V2I communication has various security concerns arising from prevalent security threats. Current authentication techniques encounter challenges regarding complexity, security, and privacy considerations. We designed a hash-based lightweight and anonymous authentication scheme to address the aforementioned restrictions and enhance the effectiveness of authentication in V2I architecture. This scheme effectively combines identity, password, and bio-metric to enhance resistance against impersonation, denial of service, and privileged insider attacks. The devised scheme distinguishes itself by a comparative analysis and security proofs, highlighting its superior capability in guaranteeing secure authentication in V2I communication. The comprehensive security analysis conducted formally and informally showcases the robustness of the proposed solution against several threats. The performance evaluation results show that our scheme demonstrates a decrease in the computational cost of 51.40% approximately and a reduction in communication overhead of around 22.57%. These results establish the efficiency and scalability of the proposed scheme as a viable solution for V2I architecture. © 2000-2011 IEEE.

Enhancing intrusion detection in IIoT: optimized CNN model with multi-class SMOTE balancing

This work introduces an intrusion detection system (IDS) tailored for industrial internet of things (IIoT) environments based on an optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The model is trained on a dataset that was balanced using a novel multi-class implementation of synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) that ensures equal representation of all classes. Additionally, systematic optimization will be used to fine tune the hyperparameters of the CNN model and mitigate the effects of the increased size of the training dataset. Evaluation results will demonstrate substantial improvement in performance when the optimized CNN model is trained on the balanced dataset. The proposed IDS will be evaluated using the IIoT-specific WUSTL-IIOT-2021 dataset, and then its generalization capability will be verified using the non-domain specific UNSW_NB15 dataset. The model’s performance will be evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. The results will demonstrate that the proposed IDS is highly effective with performance exceeding 99.9% on all performance metrics. The IDS is also highly effective in detecting intrusion for generic IT networks achieving improvements in excess of 30% compared to the default baseline model. The results emphasize the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed IDS model, making it a reliable and adaptable solution for enhancing network security across diverse network environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Impact of atmospheric propagation impairments on submillimetre airborne radar performance

This research presents the performance of submillimetre airborne radar systems in the presence of various atmospheric propagation impairments. The study aims to assess the effects of environmental factors such as rain, fog, clouds, atmospheric turbulence, and atmospheric attenuation on radar performance using computational methods such as Friis-transmission, ecological factors and radiation model. The simulated results have shown that the free space path loss significantly increases with distance and frequency and highlights the importance of accounting for phase differences in radar performance. The rise in the Earth’s potential leads to greater angles of incidence and refraction, lowers reflection coefficients, and enhances the output signal-to-noise ratio. This underscores the critical need to optimise transmit power. This research has been provided to extract valuable insights into the performance dynamics of submillimetre airborne radar systems amidst atmospheric propagation impairments, providing essential considerations for radar system design and operation in critical environments. Smart grids (SGs) rely on home area networks (HANs) and neighborhood area networks (NANs) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the physical unclonable function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol’s resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol’s effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol’s enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.

Digital microfluidic biochips (DMFBs), by precisely controlling and manipulating minute fluids, have realized the integration, automation, and cost-effectiveness of biochemical experiments and are applied in various fields such as medical diagnostics, drug development, and environmental monitoring. However, due to the composition of microelectronic component arrays, DMFBs are prone to electrode faults, leading to erroneous biochemical operations and, consequently, inaccurate experimental results. In this paper, a test path optimization algorithm combining an improved grey wolf algorithm and priority strategy is proposed to solve the problem of an extended test droplet path when DMFB tests faulty electrodes. By encoding the priority of the electrodes of the DMFB and the paths between the electrodes, the test droplet routing is performed according to the priority order. The priority coefficients are dynamically adjusted using the improved grey wolf algorithm to shorten the testing path length. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed path optimization algorithm reduces the path length by 0.45% to 2.08% compared to the Eulerian circuit method in offline testing, achieving the theoretical optimum value, and by 4.90% to 10.53% compared to the ant colony algorithm in online testing. This provides an essential foundation for accelerating the safe and reliable development of DMFBs in healthcare. © 2024 IEEE.

The creation of an algorithm for recognizing pathological abnormalities in cystic fibrosis is investigated in this paper using the CNN model with a modified psp-net. Currently, Decision Trees, Random Forests, PSP Nets, and Neural Networks are utilized in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. Since convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can process complicated picture data rapidly and efficiently, the goal of this study is to use CNNs for the detection of anomalies associated with cystic fibrosis. The method groups distinct annotated images into a simple and efficient structure, runs the set of images through a multiscale CNN procedure, and precisely locates the lung region affected by cystic fibrosis. The result of this paper demonstrated that differences in the training dataset can impact performance, but annotating CT images and categorizing them in terms of similar pathologies can improve the accuracy of the model. The proposed CNN model achieved an Accuracy of 84 %, Precision of 74%, Recall of 79%, F1-Score of 72%, error rate of 16% Which is better when compared with existing approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

Bitcoin is the leading cryptocurrency with the highest market value among digital currencies. Therefore, predicting the value of Bitcoin can help to understand the entire cryptocurrency market. However, Bitcoin has had a lot of price fluctuations since its inception. In this paper, we are going to forecast the price of Bitcoin using news headline analysis, technical analysis indicators, and historical financial data. The news headlines used in this article are scraped from the Cointelegraph news website, which contains 3988 news headlines related to Bitcoin between 2/7/2020 and 3/8/2021. A transformer pre-trained model on cryptocurrency-related texts called CryptoBERT, which is a BERT-based sentiment analysis model, has been used to analyze the textual data. Also, a novel hybrid 2DCNN-GRU deep learning model has been used to predict the price. To adjust the parameters of this model, a parameter tuning method based on orthogonal arrays called the Taguchi method has been employed. Finally, to examine the proposed model's efficiency, the obtained results have been compared with other deep learning models from the literature review that used text data to predict bitcoin prices. The results show that this model outperformed other models in terms of MAE criterion, while in the other three criteria, namely MSE, RMSE and MAPE, it still demonstrated good results. © 2024 IEEE.
