Dynamic flexible job shop scheduling is an important combinatorial optimization problem that has rich real-world applications such as product processing in manufacturing. Genetic programming has been successfully used to learn scheduling heuristics for dynamic flexible job shop scheduling. Intuitively, users prefer small and effective scheduling heuristics that can not only generate promising schedules but also are computationally efficient and easy to be understood. However, a scheduling heuristic with better effectiveness tends to have a larger size, and the effectiveness of rules and rule size are potentially conflicting objectives. With the traditional dominance relation-based multiobjective algorithms, there is a search bias toward rule size, since rule size is much easier to optimized than effectiveness, and larger rules are easily abandoned, resulting in the loss of effectiveness. To address this issue, this article develops a novel multiobjective genetic programming algorithm that takes size and effectiveness of scheduling heuristics for optimization via multitask learning mechanism. Specifically, we construct two tasks for the multiobjective optimization with biased objectives using different search mechanisms for each task. The focus of the proposed algorithm is to improve the effectiveness of learned small rules by knowledge sharing between constructed tasks which is implemented with the crossover operator. The results show that our proposed algorithm performs significantly better, i.e., with smaller and more effective scheduling heuristics, than the state-of-the-art algorithms in the examined scenarios. By analyzing the population diversity, we find that the proposed algorithm has a good balance between exploration and exploitation during the evolutionary process. © 2024 IEEE.

An efficient Quasi-Affine Transformation Evolutionary algorithm with fixed dimension updating and its application in UAV 3D path planning

Quasi-Affine Transformation Evolutionary (QUATRE) algorithm is a kind of swarm-based collaborative optimization algorithm that solves the problem of a position deviation in a DE search by using the co-evolution matrix M instead of the cross-control parameter CR in the differential evolution algorithm (DE). However, QUATRE shares some of the same weaknesses as DE, such as premature convergence and search stagnation. Inspired by the artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC), we propose a new QUATRE algorithm to improve these problems that ranks all the individuals and evolves only the poorer half of the population. In an evolving population, individuals of different levels intersect with dimensions of different sizes to improve search efficiency and accuracy. In addition, we establish a better selection framework for the parent generation individuals and select more excellent parent individuals to complete the evolution for the individuals trapped in search stagnation. To verify the performance of the new QUATRE algorithm, we divide the comparison algorithm into three groups, including ABC variant group, DE variant group, and QUATRE variant group, and the CEC2014 test suite is used for the comparison. The experimental results show the new QUATRE algorithm performance is competitive. We also successfully apply the new QUATRE algorithm on the 3D path planning of UAV, and compared with the other famous algorithm performance it is still outstanding, which verifies the algorithm's practicability. © 2024 - IOS Press. Leaving None Behind: data-Free Domain Incremental Learning for Major Depressive Disorder Detection

While deep learning techniques have shown promising performance in the Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) detection task, they still face limitations in real-world scenarios. Specifically, given the data scarcity, some efforts have resorted to aggregating data from different domains to expand the data volume. However, their effectiveness is currently limited by the domain gap and data privacy. Additionally, the class imbalance issue is particularly severe in our application, leading to biased classifying performance accordingly. To address these challenges, we propose data-Free Domain Incremental Learning for the MDD detection (DIL-MDD) task, accommodating multiple feature distributions by only accessing well-trained models from previous domains and the data in the current domain. Specifically, DIL-MDD consists of two key modules: Adaptive Class-tailored Threshold Learning (ACTL) and data-Free Domain Alignment (DFDA). The first module measures the discrepancy between the outputs of two sequential domains, based on which we learn a class-tailored threshold adaptively. Building on this, we differentiate between samples that either exhibit similarities or dissimilarities with the previous domain, where this similar sample set is identified to investigate the feature distribution of the historical data. The second module imposes an alignment constraint to narrow the gap between these two sample sets, thereby exploring the expertise of the previous domain. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on the public MDD datasets, i.e., DAIC-WOZ, MODMA, and CMDC. We also apply our method to another mental health condition, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), to further demonstrate its applicability. Finally, the ablation studies validate the superiority of the proposed modules. © 2024 IEEE.

This research work presents a novel language intervention system for Tamil-speaking children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The system satisfies the considerable requirement for tools aimed at one more section of population that has actually been forgotten by mainstream economics. Traditional language learning applications often lack specificity for diverse linguistic contexts, focusing on general learning rather than the unique challenges faced by ASD children. The proposed solution leverages Deep Learning (DL) modules to transform partial spoken Tamil words into complete, child-friendly vocabulary. This system goes beyond simple word completion;it incorporates interactive features to engage children with ASD and promote active learning. Preliminary evaluations yielded promising results, suggesting the system's potential in enhancing communication skills among Tamil-speaking children with ASD. This paper research study reviews the limitations of existing language learning tools and the rationale behind employing a DL-based approach. We discuss the specific DL architecture (e.g., Recurrent Neural Networks) envisioned for the system and how it will be trained on a corpus of Tamil speech data. This study also investigate the potential advantages beyond vocabulary learning, such as improved sentence formulation and the development of practical language abilities. Future ambitions include broadening the system's scope to include more languages, refining the DL model through ongoing training with enriched datasets, and conducting extensive user research with varied ASD populations. Validation across demographics is critical to ensuring the system's efficiency and generality. This research has the potential to bridge the language acquisition gap for Tamil-speaking children with ASD, empowering them to develop crucial communication skills and fostering their social inclusion. © 2024 IEEE.

Physical information-enhanced graph neural network for predicting phase separation

Although phase separation is a ubiquitous phenomenon, the interactions between multiple components make it difficult to accurately model and predict. In recent years, machine learning has been widely used in physics simulations. Here,we present a physical information-enhanced graph neural network(PIENet) to simulate and predict the evolution of phase separation. The accuracy of our model in predicting particle positions is improved by 40.3% and 51.77% compared with CNN and SVM respectively. Moreover, we design an order parameter based on local density to measure the evolution of phase separation and analyze the systematic changes with different repulsion coefficients and different Schmidt *** results demonstrate that our model can achieve long-term accurate predictions of order parameters without requiring complex handcrafted features. These results prove that graph neural networks can become new tools and methods for predicting the structure and properties of complex physical systems.

By analyzing data gathered through Online Learning(OL)systems,data mining can be used to unearth hidden relationships between topics and trends in student ***,in this paper,we show how data mining techniques such as clustering and association rule algorithms can be used on historical data to develop a unique recommendation system *** our implementation,we utilize historical data to generate association rules specifically for student test marks below a threshold of 60%.By focusing on marks below this threshold,we aim to identify and establish associations based on the patterns of weakness observed in the past ***,we leverage K-means clustering to provide instructors with visual representations of the generated *** strategy aids instructors in better comprehending the information and associations produced by the *** clustering helps visualize and organize the data in a way that makes it easier for instructors to analyze and gain insights,enabling them to support the verification of the relationship between *** can be a useful tool to deliver better feedback to students as well as provide better insights to instructors when developing their *** paper further shows a prototype implementation of the above-mentioned concepts to gain opinions and insights about the usability and viability of the proposed system.

Based on an open-source software-powered peer-to-peer payment mechanism, Bitcoin is a digital currency that operates independently of a central bank. Its advantages over fiat money include cheaper transaction costs, increased security, and scalability. Scientists are becoming interested in it despite concerns about illicit usage and societal repercussions. This paper aims to describe and assess existing patterns inside the literature about the sustainability of bitcoin, considering social, economic, and environmental implications. Based on the study, it is evident that the entire system of money transitioning would need an exorbitant quantity of energy to the new cryptocurrency to operate the virtual currency system and mine new bitcoins, meaning that bitcoin is likely to remain a niche currency. A fragmented and democratic maintained public record of transactions is built on blockchain technology, which may open up new and difficult prospects. Block-layer and new state-driven cryptocurrency, the sharing of medical data, the production and distribution of energy in microgrids at the citizen level, and blockchain technology may all gain from the broad adoption of blockchain-based transactions. Bitcoin and associated blockchain technologies have the potential to transcend the concerns raised by many critics when seen as a catalyst for social change. © 2024 IEEE.

Effectiveness of a touch-based hand therapeutic application for hand dexterity in children with handwriting difficulties-a pilot study

Handwriting is an important skill for children during their academic years. It is the coordination of perceptual-motor and cognitive abilities. Some children have difficulties in handwriting, which is an indication of issues in their fine motor skills. Nowadays, technology-based instructions are available to develop fine motor skills in children with handwriting disabilities. This paper describes the details of a newly developed software application namely ‘HanDex’ for children with handwriting difficulties and the experiments conducted to test its effectiveness. The application comprises six hand therapeutic activities which were designed based on the oscillation theory of handwriting. Initially, in the first phase, the experiments were conducted in nine primary school children from various schools, aged 8–12 years. Then, in the second phase, the software training was given to six upper primary school children (10–12 years) with handwriting issues. The results of using this application were promising. So one more study was conducted in another set of nine children (8–11 years) with handwriting difficulties. The participants were assessed by their special educators, class teachers and parents. After the pretest, they received a total of 18 handwriting practice sessions using this new application. At the end of the training sessions, a post test was conducted, to measure the progress in handwriting. The handwriting rubrics with eight handwriting parameters such as letter formation, placement, letter sizing, spacing of letters, legibility, speed, neatness, and spacing of words were used for handwriting assessment. The findings from the study suggested that touch-based hand therapeutic activities were beneficial for children with writing difficulties to improve their handwriting performance and tripod grip. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

High-speed encrypted traffic classification by using payload features

Traffic encryption techniques facilitate cyberattackers to hide their presence and *** classification is an important method to prevent network ***,due to the tremendous traffic volume and limitations of computing,most existing traffic classification techniques are inapplicable to the high-speed network *** this paper,we propose a High-speed Encrypted Traffic Classification(HETC)method containing two ***,to efficiently detect whether traffic is encrypted,HETC focuses on randomly sampled short flows and extracts aggregation entropies with chi-square test features to measure the different patterns of the byte composition and distribution between encrypted and unencrypted ***,HETC introduces binary features upon the previous features and performs fine-grained traffic classification by combining these payload features with a Random Forest *** experimental results show that HETC can achieve a 94%F-measure in detecting encrypted flows and a 85%–93%F-measure in classifying fine-grained flows for a 1-KB flow-length dataset,outperforming the state-of-the-art comparison ***,HETC does not need to wait for the end of the flow and can extract mass computing *** average time for HETC to process each flow is only 2 or 16 ms,which is lower than the flow duration in most cases,making it a good candidate for high-speed traffic classification.
