A distributed neural system for top-down face processing

Evidence suggests that the neural system associated with face processing is a distributed cortical network containing both bottom-up and top-down mechanisms. While bottom-up face processing has been the focus of many studies, the neural areas involved in the top-down face processing have not been extensively investigated due to difficulty in isolating top-down influences from the bottom-up response engendered by presentation of a face. In the present study, we used a novel experimental method to induce illusory face-detection. This method allowed for directly examining the neural systems involved in top-down face processing while minimizing the influence of bottom-up perceptual input. A distributed cortical network of top-down face processing was identified by analyzing the functional connectivity patterns of the right fusiform face area (FFA). This distributed cortical network model for face processing includes both "core" and "extended" face processing areas. It also includes left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), left premotor cortex, and left inferior parietal cortex. These findings suggest that top-down face processing contains not only regions for analyzing the visual appearance of faces, but also those involved in processing low spatial frequency (LSF) information, decision-making, and working memory. © 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

Aiming at challenging problem in building autonomic computing system, policy based management technology and intelligent agent technology was combined to build autonomic elements and autonomic computing system. Through importing policy into agent BDI model, a flexible agent model (PD-Agent) is built to satisfy the requirement of autonomic element. To solve logic omniscience problem and related problems of policy operator, defeasible logic is imported. Working mechanism of our proposed system illustrates that the new-type agents can construct autonomic computing system in a seamless way.

Web service matchmaking is an important aspect of interaction between modern enterprises. At present, many service matchmaking methods are proposed. However, most of them only consider function compatibility of service, yet ignoring the compatibility of task circumstance. In fact, a service description should contain semantics of task circumstance, which can improve the precision of service matchmaking. Based on domain shared ontology, this paper proposed a service compatibility matchmaking algorithm based on task circumstance, which takes task circumstance description pattern as the uniform semantic basis to describe the task circumstance in service request and service provision precisely, completely and conveniently. Our experimental data show that this novel service matchmaking method outperforms others in terms of precision.

Due to the dynamic nature of virtual organization (VO), it is necessary that multi-agent system aimed to form and operate VO should be robust in cooperating process. We present a model of flexible exception handling facilitated by polices and contracts, in which the flexible evolvement process of exception handling is divided into three phases: exception analysis, plan generation, and plan deployment. On the one hand, contract signed by cooperative partners describes the cooperation process of the partners, and on the other hand, policies can be used to describe the way to handle exception happened during cooperating process. The three phrases and the import of polices makes the exception handling process more flexible, thus makes the MAS more robust.

We have seen a peak birth-rate in recent years. Meanwhile more DSI (dysfunction of sensory integration) symptoms were observed from young children. The sensory integration is indeed very important for young children, but current relevant pedagogy seems too inadequate to train the sensory integration. Therefore, we designed an intelligent sensory integration training system DSIGame which employs many high technologies such as wireless sensor network, RFID, ubiquitous computing, database, augmented virtual reality and so on. This system can help the trained children to achieve better sensory integration so as to fulfill the requirement of equal education without distinction between classes of children.

We discuss the electrical resistivity and thermal stability of smooth thin silver (Ag) films characterized by significantly lower root mean square (RMS) surface roughness, peak-to-valley height distribution, and grain-size distribution. The smooth film was prepared by using a very thin ( ~ 1-2 nm) nucleation layer of evaporated germanium (Ge) prior to Ag evaporation. The sheet resistance of the rough silver (10 nm Ag) film is R Ag-rough ~ 51 Omega/sq compared to the smooth silver (10 nm Ag/2 nm Ge) film with R *** ~22 Omega/sq. The smooth Ag is also shown to be thermally more stable for temperatures less than 120degC.

Selecting hundreds of thousands of particles from low contrast and low SNR Cryo-electron micrograph (Cryo-EM) images is one of the major bottle-necks in advancing toward achieving atomic resolution reconstruction of biological macromolecules. To recognize true particles from impurities and other invalid particles, shape information plays a significant role. This paper provide a new method based on multi-resolution analysis to detect the main edges of objects in Cryo-EM image, which can be the pre-processing operations of next step of particle identification. © 2007 IEEE.

study on middleware of P2P in the mobile computing environment

Based on Peer-to-Peer (P2P), combining the characteristics of mobile computing environment, a structure of mobile P2P network which is adapted to mobile computing environment is put forward. The core idea of this structure is that the mobile embedded devices are indirectly connected to the P2P network with Agent, and then share their resources each other through the P2P network. Then, based on the network structure, a structure of mobile P2P middleware is designed. It is composed of Agent and mobile client. Finally, based on the P2P of JXTA and J2ME mobile computing platform, a file-sharing experiment between two mobile embedded devices validates the effectiveness and practicability of the middleware structure.

There is a clinical need for HIV protease inhibitors that can evade resistance mutations. One possible approach to designing such inhibitors relies upon the crystallographic observation that the substrates of HIV protease occupy a rather constant region within the binding site. In particular, it has been hypothesized that inhibitors which lie within this region will tend to resist clinically relevant mutations. The present study offers the first prospective evaluation of this hypothesis, via computational design of inhibitors predicted to conform to the substrate envelope, followed by synthesis and evaluation against wild-type and mutant proteases, as well as structural studies of complexes of the designed inhibitors with HIV protease. The results support the utility of the substrate envelope hypothesis as a guide to the design of robust protease inhibitors.
