A combination of fifteen top quark mass measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 5 and 20 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The combination includes measurements in top quark pair events that exploit both the semileptonic and hadronic decays of the top quark, and a measurement using events enriched in single top quark production via the electroweak t channel. The combination accounts for the correlations between measurements and achieves an improvement in the total uncertainty of 31% relative to the most precise input measurement. The result is mt=172.52±0.14(stat)±0.30(syst) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 0.33 GeV.

The longitudinal polarization fraction of the D∗ meson is measured in B0 → D∗−τ+ντ decays, where the τ lepton decays to three charged pions and a neutrino, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1. The D∗ polarization fraction FLD∗ is measured in two q2 regions, below and above 7 GeV2/c4, where q2 is defined as the squared invariant mass of the τντ system. The FLD∗ values are measured to be 0.52 ± 0.07 ± 0.04 and 0.34 ± 0.08 ± 0.02 for the lower and higher q2 regions, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The average value over the whole q2 range is: FLD∗ = 0.41 ± 0.06 ± 0.03. These results are compatible with the Standard Model predictions. © 2023, CC BY.

A search for exotic decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles, H → aa, where one decays into a photon pair and the other into a τ-lepton pair, is presented. Hadronic decays of the τ-leptons are considered and reconstructed using a dedicated tagger for collimated τ-lepton pairs. The search uses 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is performed in the mass range of the a boson between 10 GeV and 60 GeV. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background expectation. Model-independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the γγττ final state, $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (H → aa → γγττ), ranging from 0.2% to 2%, depending on the a-boson mass hypothesis.

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model W, Z, or h bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30–100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%–40%.

Angular correlations between heavy quarks provide a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Results are presented of a measurement of the azimuthal angle correlations between muons originating from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks produced in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions at the LHC. The muons are measured with transverse momenta and pseudorapidities satisfying pTμ>4 GeV and |ημ|<2.4, respectively. The distributions of azimuthal angle separation Δϕ for muon pairs having pseudorapidity separation |Δη|>0.8, are measured in different Pb+Pb centrality intervals and compared to the same distribution measured in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Results are presented separately for muon pairs with opposite-sign charges, same-sign charges, and all pairs. A clear peak is observed in all Δϕ distributions at Δϕ∼π, consistent with the parent heavy-quark pairs being produced via hard-scattering processes. The widths of that peak, characterized using Cauchy-Lorentz fits to the Δϕ distributions, are found to not vary significantly as a function of Pb+Pb collision centrality and are similar for pp and Pb+Pb collisions. This observation will provide important constraints on theoretical descriptions of heavy-quark interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.

Presented is the search for anomalous Higgs boson decays into two axion-like particles (ALPs) using the full Run 2 data set of $$140\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$13\,\text {TeV}$$ recorded by the ATLAS experiment. The ALPs are assumed to decay into two photons, providing sensitivity to recently proposed models that could explain the $$(g-2)_\mu $$ discrepancy. This analysis covers an ALP mass range from 100 to $$62\,\text {GeV}$$ and ALP-photon couplings in the range $$10^{-7}\,\text {TeV}^{-1}

A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W±→π±γ, W±→K±γ, and W±→ρ±γ is performed using up to 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products. The search results in the most stringent upper limits to date on the branching fractions B(W±→π±γ)<1.9×10−6, B(W±→K±γ)<1.7×10−6, B(W±→ρ±γ)<5.2×10−6 at 95% confidence level.

A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton+jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb−1 of s=7 TeV pp collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate tt¯ events from backgrounds. The tt¯ production cross section is found to be σtt¯=168.5±0.7(stat) −5.9+6.2(syst) −3.2+3.4(lumi) pb. The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

The measurement of charmonium states produced in proton-neon ( $$p\text {Ne}$$ ) collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of $${{J} \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }$$ and $$\psi {(2S)}$$ mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 $$\mathrm{\,Te\hspace{-1.00006pt}V}$$ protons colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5\mathrm{\,Ge\hspace{-1.00006pt}V} $$ . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $$21.7\pm 1.4 $$ nb $$^{-1}$$ . The $${{J} \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }$$ and $$\psi {(2S)}$$ hadrons are reconstructed in $$\mu ^+$$ $$\mu ^-$$ final states. The $${{J} \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }$$ production cross-section per target nucleon in the centre-of-mass rapidity range $$y^\star \in [-2.29, 0]$$ is found to be $$506 \pm 8 \pm 46 \text { nb/nucleon}$$ . The ratio of $${{J} \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }$$ and $$D^0$$ cross-sections is evaluated to $$(1.06 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.09)\%$$ . The $$\psi {(2S)}$$ to $${{J} \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }$$ relative production rate is found to be $$(1.67 \pm 0.27\pm 0.10)\%$$ in good agreement with other measurements involving beam and target nuclei of similar sizes.

Using a proton–proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$5.7~\text {fb}^{-1}$$ , the lifetime of the light $${{B} ^0_{s}} $$ mass eigenstate, $$\tau _{L}$$ , is measured using the $$B^0_s \rightarrow J/\psi \eta $$ decay mode to be $$\begin{aligned} \tau _{\text {L}} = 1.445 \pm 0.016 \text {(stat)} \pm 0.008 \text {(syst)} \,\text {ps}. \end{aligned}$$ A combination of this result with a previous LHCb analysis using an independent dataset corresponding to 3 fb $$^{-1}$$ of integrated luminosity gives $$\begin{aligned} \tau _{\text {L}} = 1.452 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.002 \,\text {ps}, \end{aligned}$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second due to the uncorrelated part of the systematic uncertainty and the third due to the correlated part of the systematic uncertainty.
