The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

EEG and fMRI are complementary, noninvasive technologies for investigating human brain function. These modalities have been used to uncover large-scale functional networks and their disruptions in clinical populations. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI, integrating these modalities can provide a more holistic understanding of brain activity. This work explores a multimodal source decomposition technique for extracting shared modes of temporal variation between fMRI BOLD signals and EEG spectral power fluctuations in the resting state. The resulting components are then compared between patients with focal epilepsy and controls, revealing multimodal network differences between groups.

Effective Dimension Aware Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent for Convex Optimization Problems

Fractional-order stochastic gradient descent (FOSGD) leverages a fractional exponent to capture long-memory effects in optimization, yet its practical impact is often constrained by the difficulty of tuning and stabilizing this exponent. In this work, we introduce 2SED Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent (2SEDFOSGD), a novel method that synergistically combines the Two-Scale Effective Dimension (2SED) algorithm with FOSGD to automatically calibrate the fractional exponent in a data-driven manner. By continuously gauging model sensitivity and effective dimensionality, 2SED dynamically adjusts the exponent to curb erratic oscillations and enhance convergence rates. Theoretically, we demonstrate how this dimension-aware adaptation retains the benefits of fractional memory while averting the sluggish or unstable behaviors frequently observed in naive fractional SGD. Empirical evaluations across multiple benchmarks confirm that our 2SED-driven fractional exponent approach not only converges faster but also achieves more robust final performance, suggesting broad applicability for fractional-order methodologies in large-scale machine learning and related domains. © 2025, CC BY.

Distinct selectivity to the spin angular momenta of photons has garnered significant attention in recent years, for its relevance in basic science and for imaging and sensing applications. While nonlocal metasurfaces with strong chiral responses to the incident light have been reported, these responses are typically limited to a narrow range of incident angles. In this study, we demonstrate a nonlocal metasurface that showcases strong chirality, characterized by circular dichroism (∼0.6), over a wide range of incident angles ±5°. Its quality factor, circular dichroism and resonant frequency can be optimized by design. These findings pave the way to further advance the development of valley-selective optical cavities and augmented reality applications.

Local and global sensitivity analyses on the overflow probability of Abadia de Goiás radioactive near surface repository

This work presents a sensitivity analysis of the overflow probability of the near- surface radioactive repository built after the Abadia de Goiás accident, where radioactive 137Cs was released. The purpose of the analysis is to help the repository owner and the regulatory body make decisions on design parameters that affect the overflow probability. The following parameters have been considered: degradation function of the repository ceiling, internal porosity of the repository, internal area of the repository base, repository base and wall thicknesses, repository height, height of the liquid column inside the repository, average rainfall rate, evapotranspiration rate, surface runoff and hydraulic conductivity of the repository concrete. The choice for the range of each parameter is discussed. An investigation of the role of the mentioned parameters is detailed based on results obtained in a previous paper, and the dependencies among the rate parameters on the average rainfall rate is emphasized and modeled. To give a deeper perspective, local and global sensitivity analyses have been performed. In the case of global analysis, two approaches have been followed: in the first, the concept of Normalized Mutual Information and the other one leverages Shapley values derived from Light Gradient Boosting Machine and Shapley values have been used for investigating non-linearities. For some parameters the lowest values are to be considered, e.g., the repository base thickness and the average rainfall rate, while for others the highest value is desirable, like the evapotranspiration rate and the surface runoff in order to obtain lower overflow probabilities. These results should be looked with care because nonlinearities have been identified by the Shapley value analysis. Multi-step ahead time series forecasting is essential in Internet of Things (IoT) applications in smart cities and smart homes to make accurate future predictions and precise decision-making. Thus, this study introduces a novel multiple-input single-output (MISO) forecasting method called Multi-Step Embedding-based Fuzzy Time Series (MS-EFTS), designed to predict high-dimensional non-stationary time series data. As a first-order approach, it employs a direct strategy that integrates an embedding transformation with a weighted multivariate FTS (WMVFTS) model. This combination allows for effective predictions over long-term horizons within low-dimensional, learned continuous representations. The effectiveness of the proposed MS-EFTS is assessed using three high-dimensional IoT time series in this investigation. The obtained results showcase the superior performance of the proposed method compared to some deep learning forecasting methods, including LSTM, BiLSTM, TCN, and CNN-LSTM, in terms of accuracy, parsimony, and efficiency. © 2014 IEEE.

Reproducing ATT&CK Techniques and Lifecycles to Train Machine Learning Classifier

he MITRE ATT&CK framework categorizes threat actor behaviors into a sequence of techniques called the attack lifecycle. Based on this, Our work introduces a dual-labeled dataset that is accurately labeled with distinct techniques and lifecycles defined by ATT&CK. The dataset offered a more thorough perspective than previous datasets that employed binary or attack classification. It encompassed 17 distinct techniques throughout five lifecycles and was generated through an automated method that guarantees reproducibility and learnability. Reproducibility guarantees the dataset’s consistency, whereas learnability signifies its use in training machine learning models. Our analysis produced a positive result. The dataset achieved a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.7 for reproducibility. Regarding distinguishing classes, it exhibits an average AUC-ROC score of 0.92 for techniques and 0.82 for lifecycles. The model training yielded an average F1 score of 0.95 for technique classification and 0.9 for lifecycle classification, but only for the traffic dataset. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Simulated prosthetic vision identifies checkerboard as an effective raster pattern for retinal implants

Objective: This study systematically evaluates the impact of raster patterns-specific spatial arrangements of sequential electrode activation-on performance and perceived difficulty in simulated prosthetic vision (SPV). By addressing a critical gap in the literature, we aimed to identify patterns that optimize functional vision in retinal implants. Approach: Sighted participants completed letter recognition and motion discrimination tasks under four raster patterns (horizontal, vertical, checkerboard, and random) using an immersive SPV system. The simulations employed psychophysically validated models of electrode activation, phosphene appearance, and temporal dynamics, ensuring realistic representation of prosthetic vision. Performance accuracy and self-reported difficulty were analyzed to assess the effects of raster patterning. Main Results: The checkerboard pattern consistently outperformed other raster patterns, yielding significantly higher accuracy and lower difficulty ratings across both tasks. The horizontal and vertical patterns introduced biases aligned with apparent motion artifacts, while the checkerboard minimized such effects. Random patterns resulted in the lowest performance, underscoring the importance of structured activation. Significance: These findings provide the first systematic evaluation of raster patterns, suggesting that the checkerboard configuration may enhance usability and perceptual clarity in retinal implants. Advancements in sequencing technology have expanded data availability, capturing diverse phenotypic traits and biological perturbations. However, increased resolution also raises complexity, as studies now examine multiple dimensions, including donor phenotypes, anatomical regions, cell types, and time points. Integrating datasets across studies promises insights into health and disease beyond the scope of individual experiments, but this requires methods that can separate technical artifacts from meaningful biological signals while providing interpretable insights into condition-related genetic factors. Existing approaches tend to focus on either integration or interpretability, rarely addressing both simultaneously. Identifying asphyxia using computer vision in real-world settings poses challenges due to varying video quality, diverse lighting conditions, and subtle color changes in the newborn's skin. This study presents an end-to-end framework for automated neonatal asphyxia detection using time series video analysis and makes three key contributions. First, the proposed framework integrates YOLOv8-based instance segmentation with advanced feature extraction across multiple color spaces and texture analysis to detect neonatal asphyxia through the multi-modal analysis of skin features in video streams. Second, we introduce a new quality-aware temporal analysis framework that includes adaptive quality assessment for evaluating frames in real time, multi-stage feature stability tracking across temporal windows, hysteresis-based decision logic for ensuring temporal consistency, and LightGBM classification with comprehensive feature engineering to assess severity. Third, we provide a curated time series video dataset of 12,973 frames from 45 neonates, of which some were healthy, and some had asphyxia of varying severity. The findings show that the YOLOv8-based instance segmentation achieved a mean average precision (mAP@0.5) of 0.925 for accurate skin region isolation, and the LightGBM classifier outperformed traditional models with an accuracy of 0.998 and an F1-score of 0.998. The system maintains real-time processing at 30 FPS for normal and mild asphyxia cases with a minor reduction to 20 FPS in more challenging scenarios and exhibits robust temporal stability across severity levels, with consistency scores above 0.90.
