Visible light communications (VLC) enable wireless data transmission using existing light-emitting diode (LED) illumination. This experimental study evaluates the performance of multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) configurations in indoor VLC systems by analyzing their impact on both communication and illumination. Various MIMO setups (2 × 2, 3 × 2, and 4 × 2) are compared against single input single output (SISO), and single input multiple outputs (SIMO) schemes, using commercial LED luminaires as transmitters. While the 4 × 2 MIMO configuration demonstrates superior overall performance, intermediate configurations like 3 × 2 or 2 × 2 MIMO offer an attractive trade-off between system complexity and performance enhancement, particularly in scenarios with space or cost constraints. The results show that MIMO configurations significantly outperform SISO systems, achieving reliable communication (BER ≤ 10−3) at practical indoor distances of up to 2 meters while maintaining illumination levels above 300 lux, where conventional SISO setups do not meet these dual requirements. These findings demonstrate the practical feasibility of MIMO-VLC systems for indoor deployments. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

For wind power systems to operate successfully and efficiently, accurate forecasting is critical. The integration of large wind farms with smart grid technology mainly depend on accurate models for wind power output prediction. This study introduces a neural basis expansion approach named N-BEATS (neural basis expansion analysis for interpretable time series forecasting) for time series multi-step wind power forecasting. N-BEATS is a deep neural network architecture composed of multiple fully connected layers, arranged with both forward and backward residual connections. The performance of N-BEATS was benchmarked using classical approaches including AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Seasonal AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), Holt-Winters, and the recurrent neural network named Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). All models hyperparameters were tuned by Bayesian optimization. The N-BEATS model demonstrated superior forecasting scores and outperformed traditional methods in metrics such as mean absolute error and root mean square error for different forecasting horizons. © 2024 IEEE.

This study addresses the Testing Facility Location with Constrained Queue Time Problem. This optimization problem focuses on determining the best places to deploy testing sites and their available testers for infectious diseases, while constraining the maximum time in the queue with a given probability. An integer programming model is introduced and applied to the three biggest counties, in terms of population, of Florida, United States. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the model’s output, aiming to check if the queueing time constraint is being satisfied. Through the experiments, a testing facility deployment plan can be determined for each county and further validated by the simulation. The results show that the solutions returned by the model behaved successfully when submitted to the Monte Carlo method, not exceeding the time in the queue in more than the predefined probability. © 2024 IEEE.

This work is an approach that brings together Learning Analytics and Ontologies for a data classification that promotes improvements and behavioral changes for students and teachers on e-Learning platforms. Combining training courses, dashboards, user’s evaluations, and based on Design science Research (DSR) methodology, artifacts were created. One of the most important artifacts of our work is the Sapes tool that aims to improve students’ perceptions of their learning path and to promote a better teacher overview to follow their students’ progress. The results showed high approval by the participating students and teachers, who perceived the Sapes tool as a good facilitator of the teaching-learning process, with possibilities for self-monitoring, dynamization of the learning sequence and better interactivity with colleagues, highlighted as absent in standard e-Learning courses. In addition, the application changed the behavior of users towards the content provided by the teacher, with students performing self-management and self-regulation that were not commonly performed previously. © 2023, International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning. The training of a professional in the area of computing involves understanding the process of building software. In the computer science course curricular guidelines, this training is a requirement for graduating from the course. For the construction of the Pedagogical Project of the Course (PPC), the In-stitutions observe reference documents for the development of the project according to the local/regional specificity. Dealing with computing courses, the National Curricular Guidelines (DCN) for Computing courses, the training references of the Brazil-ian Computing Society (SBC) and the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK), are key elements to support the construction of the PPC. In computer science courses, software engineering is presented as a central element in technological training for students. Software engineering defines stages for the construction of quality software, which begins with the requirements conception, analysis, design and ends with the construction of the solution. The scope of this article will deal with the software design area, which is responsible for defining an implementable structure for a software product, which meets the specified requirements, that is, makes the communication interface between the requirements and the construction of the software. In the specialized literature, the area of Software Design (SD) is presented as important and emerging topics in the training of Computing professionals. Emerging topics for teaching Software Engineering aligned with teaching Software Design were identified, such as: UX Design Practices, Current Interface Prototyping Tools and Design Patterns. One of the challenges for the area of Software Engineering is the high heterogeneity of solutions, leading to hybrid systems, with multi-paradigms, and this heterogeneity reflects on how the professional designs the solution, what is directly associated with training in Software Design. Land use and land cover (LULC) changes strongly affect local hydrology and sediment *** current study focused on a basin in the Brazilian Amazon and had the following three objectives:(1) to perform an effective diagnosis of flow and sediment yield,(2) to evaluate the impacts of LULC changes over the last 40 years on the hydro-sedimentological variables,and (3) to investigate the impacts of the possible trends or breaking points in the flow,surface runoff,and sediment yield *** Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model validation showed that the simulated results were consistent with the data measured in the dynamic reproduction of flow ***,changes in LULC altered surface runoff,sediment yield,and flow according to the Mann-Kendall and Pettitt non-parametric *** was also observed that the sub-basins in which pastureland is predominant are more susceptible to increased surface runoff and sediment *** to trend and homogeneity tests,these sub-basins had break points in the time series of these *** the other hand,in the sub-basins whose land cover is predominantly forest,the time series is homogeneous and *** current study highlighted the impacts that 40 years of LULC changes in an Amazonian basin had on hydro-sedimentological variables,which,in turn,can play an important role in changing the hydrological cycle,consequently these changes can also impact diverse human activities in the region,such as agribusiness,livestock,energy production,food security,and public water ***,it is concluded that the SWAT model is a good estimator of hydro-sedimentological processes in Amazonian basins and can be used by decision makers in the management of water and environmental resources.

This study presents a hybrid model, STL-ARIMA-ES-LSTM, developed to improve the accuracy of Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) forecasts in the Amazon region. The model integrates seasonal and trend decomposition using Loess (STL) with statistical methods (ARIMA and Exponential Smoothing-ES) and a machine learning technique (Long Short-Term Memory - LSTM). Applied to GPP data from the PE-QFR site, the hybrid model achieved significantly better error metrics, with RMSE of 1.69 gC/m2/day, MAE of 1.35 gC/m2/day, and MAPE of 0.20%, compared to the standalone LSTM (RMSE of 2.16 gC/m2/day, MAE of 1.78 gC/m2/day, and MAPE of 0.27%). Furthermore, the hybrid model showed stronger agreement with the observed data, with correlation coefficient r =0.62 and R2 =0.39 , whereas the LSTM alone yielded r =0.26 and R2 = –0.002. The STL decomposition allowed effective separation of trend, seasonality, and residual components, enabling tailored modeling of each, which contributed to the improved predictive performance. These results demonstrate the advantage of hybrid approaches in capturing the nonlinear and seasonal patterns of GPP, supporting enhanced environmental monitoring and more informed climate change mitigation strategies in the Amazon. © 2013 IEEE.

When providing patient care, healthcare professionals often rely on interpreting laboratory and clinical test results. However, their analysis is constrained by human capacity, leading to uncertainties in diagnoses. Machine learning has the potential to evaluate a larger amount of data and identify patterns and relationships that may otherwise go unnoticed. However, popular machine learning algorithms typically require abundant and labeled data, which is not always available. To address this challenge, the adoption of active learning allows for the selection of the most relevant instances for training, reducing the need for extensive labeling. Additionally, fuzzy logic offers the ability to handle uncertainties. This paper proposes a novel approach that utilizes fuzzy membership functions to transform data as a pre-processing step for active learning. The objective is to approximate similar instances, specifically for the purpose of prediction, thereby minimizing the workload of human experts in labeling data for model training. The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in predicting heart disease and highlight the potential of using membership functions to enhance machine learning models in the analysis of medical information. By incorporating fuzzy logic and active learning, healthcare professionals can benefit from improved accuracy and efficiency in diagnosing and predicting pacients’ health conditions. © 2024 – IOS Press.

Low Earth Orbit satellite constellations are highly mobile and thus have time-varying network topologies. Such time-varying networks face various challenges due to intermittently available links and devices. Consequently, many routing algorithms that work well on the terrestrial Internet may not be suitable for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations. This paper provides an analysis of the impact that different types of routing algorithms may have on the performance of LEO constellations. The provided study analyses not only link-state routing algorithms, as used in well-known routing protocols for LEO constellations such as Contact Graph Routing (CGR), which follows a Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach, but also distance-vector algorithms, as well as the potential combination of link-state and distance-vector algorithms when network clusters are used in a LEO constellation. © 2024 IEEE.

Software projects are affected by technical knowledge as well as the personality of the team. Such factors can reduce or increase the software quality and development speed. For successful task allocation, it is essential to consider the skills and profile of each developer, thus maximizing their productivity. In projects with large teams, task allocation can be challenging, and the help of tools can facilitate its execution. In this work, we propose an intelligent approach for allocating software development tasks suitable to the profile of developers. From the literature, we define the appropriate skills and technical profiles for a development team, and the assessment is based on the developer completing a questionnaire. We developed a recommendation system to suggest tasks to be allocated to developers, employing text processing techniques. For validation, 495 tasks were used from an actual project developing simulator software for military training. The recommended allocations were evaluated by the project developers and used to improve the system. Validations showed that the developed approach makes consistent and coherent task recommendations to developers according to the developer profile, as participants agree with the recommendation for 76% of tasks. © 2024 IEEE.
