This paper aims to present the design process of dynamic data physicalization for bar charts and their variants, simple bars, stacked bars, and clustered bars. The physical artifact has 12 bars that are automatically configured according to the dataset by electromechanical components controlled by an Arduino board. The models of the printed 3D parts, the electromechanical components used and their connection scheme, the design aspects to set up the dynamic physical visualization according to the data, how the users choose the dataset and the kind of physical chart, usage scenarios with different types of charts and physicalization parameters are presented in detail. Finally, some strengths and difficulties in creating dynamic physical visualizations are highlighted and future works are proposed.

The process of creating physical data visualizations is not a trivial task. In general, it may require skills from the user in information visualization, tangible interaction, 3D modeling, fabrication of physical objects, etc. In addition, few works have presented computational support to the entire digital and physical rendering pipeline of data visualization, characterizing many steps of this process as manual. From this context, this work presents a process that facilitates the generation of physical data visualization. Besides that, It allows one to define which type of physical visualization to create, among passive, rearrangeable, and dynamic physicalization types. Finally, the pipelines for each physicalization type are presented, with scenarios including physical bar charts, stacked bar charts, and grouped bar charts.

Correntropy-Based Data Selective Adaptive Filtering

Data selection can be used in conjunction with adaptive filtering algorithms to avoid unnecessary weight updating and thereby reduce computational overhead. This paper presents a novel correntropy-based data selection method as an alternative to conventional data selection mechanisms based on squared error values. We developed a variable correntropy sensing algorithm to maximize the instantaneous correntropy function for the Gaussian kernel function to mitigate the impact of impulse noise and other forms of noise that can be disregarded in data selection. The proposed data selection mechanism can be implemented with any adaptive filtering algorithm. In simulations, the proposed method (implemented with the least mean squared algorithm) outperformed comparable error-based data selection schemes in terms of hit rate and miss rate, and the resulting weight updating ratio was close to the expected weight updating ratio. © 2023 IEEE. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a valuable source of data for a wide range of real-time applications, due to their functionality, availability, adaptability, and maneuverability. Working as mobile sensors, they can provide a cost-effective solution for extremely complex tasks, such as inspection, air-to-ground communications, search and rescue, surveillance, among others. Nevertheless, the robots needs to navigate in quite distinct environments and in different dynamism levels, usually facing unpredicted situations, very often using limited sensing and computing capabilities. A large number of solutions to this problem has been featured by the scientific community in the last years, some of them based on machine-learning (ML) methods. Due to its great capability to deal with big data and complexity, as well as its speedy and high-accuracy processing, the ML framework has been used to improve existing technologies and control techniques. In this context, its adoption in several UAV navigation strategies is expected to provide solutions for various problems where UAVs are used in real-time applications. Thus, in order to contextualize the most recent advances, this work provides a detailed survey of relevant researches in which ML techniques have been used in UAV navigation to improve some functional aspects, such as energy-efficiency, communication, execution time, resource management, obstacle avoidance, and path planning. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Speed Bump Detection Through Inertial Sensors and Deep Learning in a Multi-contextual Analysis

Speed bumps are vertical raisings of the road pavement used to force drivers to slow down to ensure greater safety in traffic. However, these obstacles have disadvantages in terms of efficiency and safety, where the presence of speed bumps can affect travel time and fuel consumption, cause traffic jams, delay emergency vehicles, and cause vehicle damage or accidents when not properly signaled. Due to these factors, the availability of geolocation information for these obstacles can benefit several applications in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles, allowing to trace more efficient routes or alert the driver of the presence of the obstacle ahead. Speed bump detection applications described in the literature employ cameras or inertial sensors, represented by accelerometers and gyroscopes. While camera-based solutions are mature with evaluation in different contextual conditions, those based on inertial sensors do not offer multi-contextual analyses, being mostly simple applications of proof of concept, not applicable in real-world scenarios. For this reason, in this work, we propose the development of a reliable speed bump detection model based on inertial sensors, capable of operating reliably in contextual variations: different vehicles, driving styles, and environments in which vehicles can travel to. For the model development and validation, we collect nine datasets with contextual variations, using three different vehicles, with three different drivers, in three different environments, in which there are three different surface types, in addition to variations in conservation state and the presence of obstacles and anomalies. The speed bumps are present in two different pavement types, asphalt and cobblestone. Forced phonetic alignment (FPA) is the task of associating a given phonetic unit to a timestamp interval in the speech waveform. Phoneticians are able mark the boundaries with precision, but as the corpus grows it becomes infeasible to do it by hand. For Brazilian Portuguese (BP) in particular, only three tools appear to perform FPA: EasyAlign, Montreal Forced Aligner (MFA), and UFPAlign. Therefore, this work aims to develop resources based on Kaldi toolkit for UFPAlign, including their release alongside all scripts under open licenses;and to bring forth a comparison to the other two aforementioned aligners. Evaluation took place in terms of the phone boundary metric over a dataset of 385 hand-aligned utterances, and results show that Kaldi-based aligners perform better overall, and that UFPAlign models are more accurate than MFA’s. Furthermore, complex deep-learning-based approaches did not seem to improve performance compared to simpler models. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This Research to Practice Full Paper seeks to map the assets of ACM / IEEE, SBC and SWEBOK guide specifically in the knowledge area of Software Process Improvement (SPI) to create a set of contents and competences to be addressed in the classroom, aligned with international and Brazilian references using the good practices of CMMI DEV v2.0 and MR-MPS-SW 2023. The teacher is the main gear for conducting teaching, research, and extension, being responsible for selecting the methods to be used to improve the teaching-learning process. SPI is a set of partially ordered steps with the intention of achieving a goal within the context of software development and involves understanding existing processes and changing them to increase product quality and / or reduce costs and development time. Thus, teaching SPI needs to be addressed in computing courses to meet the wishes of the software industry.

The increasing presence of digital evidence in legal, criminal, and civil cases requires adaptations to traditional chain-of-custody processes to ensure the integrity of this evidence. This work proposes the use of blockchain technology, specifically through Hyperledger Fabric, to strengthen the chain of custody for digital evidence. The developed solution employs smart contracts to immutably record each stage of evidence handling, from collection to transfer of custody, ensuring data authenticity, integrity, and traceability. Our implementation demonstrates that blockchain technology can significantly reduce the risk of evidence tampering, improve process efficiency, and facilitate audits, thereby contributing to greater reliability in the presentation of evidence during judicial proceedings.
