aaaa The adaptive learning community seeks to provide solutions to customize and enhance students’ learning experiences when accessing web-based learning systems. The adaptation usually occurs from the use of learning materials and user information data, which turns the adaptation process highly dependent on the quality of the repositories. Then, the best adaptation a system may offer might still not satisfy the users’ needs. In this work, we propose an approach to assist teachers and stakeholders in understanding repositories’ characteristics and their gaps according to students’ needs. Our approach, first, selects the best sequence of learning materials for each student, which is a well-known problem called Adaptive Curriculum Sequencing. Then, based on the selected sequences, we use optimization approaches, such as GRASP and Simulated Annealing, to generate new learning materials possibilities that can improve ACS recommendations. This way, our new approach assists teachers in assembling their learning materials. We have evaluated our approach by comparing it to a traditional approach using a real dataset, and the results are promising. In fact, it is possible to design customized materials using a combination of GRASP and brute force algorithms on the characteristics of the learning materials. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Self SOC estimation for second-life lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are the mainstream technology for energy storage in several industrial segments, such as mobility and stationary systems for solar, wind, or other alternative energy source. This technology has a long lifetime, low self-discharge, high capacity and density, and can store energy longer. Despite that, LIB is suitable to supply power for electric mobility if its state of health (SOH) is higher than 80%. Then, an alternative for batteries with SOH below that is recycling or second-life batteries (SLB). The first is expensive and complex;only some companies retain the technology. Still, the SLB can be an excellent solution to maintaining LIBs in operation for slow vehicles or stationary systems. However, SLB requires intelligent battery management systems (BMS) because the packs are composed of cells with different characteristics, which makes the operation more difficult. This work presents a system consisting of two Machine Learning (ML) layers to automatically estimate the state of charge (SOC) of SLB independent of the battery's capacity or age. In the first phase, a Random Forest (RF) model was built and trained to discover the curve capacity of different SLB characteristics and capacities. After the capacity curve selection, in the second phase, a new RF model was built and trained for each capacity curve to make SOC inferences of the batteries. The discharge data curve of one hundred batteries was used for the development, whereas eighteen were used for the training and eighty-two for tests. The results indicated a root square mean error (RSME) below 45 mAh for the capacity estimation (phase 1), and an RSME below 0.87% was found in the second phase for the SOC estimation. Finally, the capacity and SOC models have been inserted in a Raspberry system to measure the main parameters of SLB (voltage and current) and make inferences in real time independent of the cell's age. Fetal mortality and newborn health issues require urgent attention because of high maternal and infant mortality rates during labor, highlighting the critical need for accurate fetal condition monitoring to reduce complications. This study proposes the development of a fetal health risk classification model based on Important Feature Selection (IFS) and a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) using cardiotocography (CTG) data from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. The IFS method was used to select the most relevant features, reduce model complexity, and increase generalization to prevent overfitting. The IFS-CART model was tested with 10-fold cross-validation and showed an accuracy of 94.50%, superior to the conventional CART, which only reached 93.83%. In addition, the average values of the True Positive Rate (TPR) and True Negative Rate (TNR) also increased, indicating that this model is effective in distinguishing normal, suspected, and pathological fetal conditions. Evaluation using the area under the curve receiver operating characteristic (AUC-ROC) showed that the model had high performance in detecting at-risk conditions, with an AUC of 0.981 for the"suspect" class. This finding confirmed that IFS-CART is not only accurate but also has high interpretability, making it easy for medical personnel to use for clinical decision support. The results of this study show that IFS-CART can serve as a reliable decision support system for real-time fetal health monitoring. The use of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in combination with supplementary cementitious materials like metakaolin presents an opportunity to enhance concrete performance while addressing environmental concerns in construction, lowering CO2 emissions by clincker substitution. This study investigates the behavior of high-strength microconcrete incorporating SAPs and metakaolin, evaluating their feasibility and sustainability for construction applications. Three microconcrete and paste mixes were analyzed: a reference mix and two mixes containing 0.15% and 0.30% SAP by cement mass. All mixes included a 10% metakaolin substitution by cement mass and maintained the same water/cement ratio, without additional curing water for SAPs. Fresh-state tests assessed consistency and specific mass, while hardened-state tests measured elastic modulus. Autogenous shrinkage was evaluated through linear volumetric variation using dial gauges. Microstructural analysis of the pastes and microconcretes involved thermogravimetry, isothermal conduction calorimetry, and X-ray microtomography. The results highlight the beneficial effects of SAPs with metakaolin, including enhanced hardened state properties and refined pore structure, achieved despite the absence of extra curing water. SAPs contributed to increased pozzolanic activity in metakaolin, likely due to delayed water release from SAP desorption. Furthermore, SAPs effectively mitigated autogenous shrinkage, making their application in concrete mixes promising. These findings emphasize the dual benefit of improving concrete performance and advancing environmental sustainability, showcasing the potential of SAPs and metakaolin in producing high-performance, eco-friendly concrete solutions for the construction industry. © 2025, The Authors. Identifying asphyxia using computer vision in real-world settings poses challenges due to varying video quality, diverse lighting conditions, and subtle color changes in the newborn's skin. This study presents an end-to-end framework for automated neonatal asphyxia detection using time series video analysis and makes three key contributions. First, the proposed framework integrates YOLOv8-based instance segmentation with advanced feature extraction across multiple color spaces and texture analysis to detect neonatal asphyxia through the multi-modal analysis of skin features in video streams. Second, we introduce a new quality-aware temporal analysis framework that includes adaptive quality assessment for evaluating frames in real time, multi-stage feature stability tracking across temporal windows, hysteresis-based decision logic for ensuring temporal consistency, and LightGBM classification with comprehensive feature engineering to assess severity. Third, we provide a curated time series video dataset of 12,973 frames from 45 neonates, of which some were healthy, and some had asphyxia of varying severity. The findings show that the YOLOv8-based instance segmentation achieved a mean average precision (mAP@0.5) of 0.925 for accurate skin region isolation, and the LightGBM classifier outperformed traditional models with an accuracy of 0.998 and an F1-score of 0.998. The system maintains real-time processing at 30 FPS for normal and mild asphyxia cases with a minor reduction to 20 FPS in more challenging scenarios and exhibits robust temporal stability across severity levels, with consistency scores above 0.90. Purpose: The objectives of this study were to create a device with technological development of the self-inflating bag (SIB) equipment to measure the variables tidal volume, peak inspiratory pressure, and inspiratory flow and to evaluate the knowledge of undergraduate students in handling the SIB. To reduce the risks of mortality, length of hospital stay, and infections, SIB is a resource used to ventilate the patient through the inflation of the device, but it is not capable of measuring the ventilatory parameters. Excess ventilation and incorrect handling of the bag can cause lung injury in newborns. Therefore, measuring these parameters can prevent lung injury resulting from inadequate ventilation. Method: This is a cross-sectional and experimental study, with the development of a device SIB that allows the evaluation of variables of neonatal respiratory mechanics that were tested with an artificial lung. It was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and the research was developed in three stages: the first represents the search for scientific articles for the consensus of neonatal ventilatory variables for the construction of the SIB parameters;the second stage depicts the technological development of a device capable of monitoring such variables through the SIB. In the third stage, the content validation of the device with the handling of the SIB was carried out by students of medicine and physiotherapy courses of Brazil. Results: In this work, a device that analyzes the values of the main ventilatory parameters in neonatology was developed and to generate a safety range for the use of the device, curves with a tolerance of 10% up and down were created. All electronic components were coupled to the equipment, with a display that transmits the parameter values. Active mobility is becoming an essential component of the green transition in modern cities. However, the challenge of designing an efficient network of protected bike lanes without disrupting existing road networks for motorised vehicles remains unsolved. This paper focuses on the specific case of Milan, using a network approach that considers street widths to optimise the placement of dedicated bike lanes at the edges of the network. Unlike other network approaches in this field, our method considers the actual shapes of the streets, which introduces a realistic aspect lacking in current studies. We used these data to simulate cycling networks that maximise connectivity while minimising the impact of bike lane placement on the drivable network. Our mixed simulation strategies optimise for edge betweenness and width. Furthermore, we quantify the impact of dedicated bike lane infrastructure on the existing road network, demonstrating that it is feasible to create highly effective cycling networks with minimal disruption caused by lane width reductions. This paper illustrates how realistic cycling lanes can be simulated using road width data and discusses the challenges and benefits of moving beyond one-dimensional road data in network studies. Disease detection in rice plants at the Padang Lawas District Agriculture Service is carried out every year by collecting data from the Agriculture Service. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out classification to determine the best percentage of training data and test data in determining rice plant diseases and a comparison between testing data and training data for accurate accurate predictions. So data mining algorithms are needed that must be used to classify these diseases. Classification is carried out to group data into categories or groups so that objects from the same data are more similar to data objects from different groups. In this study, disease classification was processed using the C4.5 algorithm using disease data collection on rice plants from 2017 to 2020 which had a total of 248 data. The results of testing data and training data will be compared to see accuracy performance. © 2023 IEEE.

The incorporation of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and metakaolin in high-strength microconcrete offers a promising strategy to enhance performance while reducing environmental impact through clinker substitution. This study evaluates the feasibility and sustainability of SAP-modified microconcretes by analyzing fresh and hardened-state properties, autogenous shrinkage, and microstructural characteristics. Three microconcrete and paste mixes were investigated: a reference mix and two containing 0.15 % and 0.30 % SAP by cement mass, all with 10 % metakaolin substitution and a constant water/cement ratio without additional curing water. The results demonstrated that SAP effectively mitigated autogenous shrinkage, with MKSAP30 reducing shrinkage by 53 % compared to the reference mix. Microstructural analysis revealed a significant refinement in the pore network, reducing the average pore diameter from 508.76 µm (MKREF) to 214.65 µm (MKSAP30), despite an increase in total porosity. Moreover, SAP-modified mixes exhibited improved hydration efficiency, as evidenced by increased C-S-H formation and calcium hydroxide content in thermogravimetric analysis. The elastic modulus increased by 5.2 % and 13.9 % for MKSAP15 and MKSAP30, respectively, suggesting that enhanced hydration and pozzolanic activity offset the expected mechanical loss due to porosity. These findings highlight the dual benefits of SAP incorporation: improving concrete performance while promoting sustainability. The synergy between SAP and metakaolin enhances durability and mechanical properties, making SAP-modified microconcrete a viable solution for high-performance and environmentally friendly construction applications.
