Based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for optimal design of PID controller, a method is proposed to navigate of a two-wheeled mobile robot from a given initial configuration to a desired final configuration in an unknown environment filled with obstacles. The mobile robot can follow a wall with PID control to adjust motor speed and avoid obstacles with moving square method in an unknown environment. The PSO algorithm is an optimization technique which is inspired by the social-like behavior, such as bird flocking or fish utilized it to solve optimization problems. It finds the global best solution by simply adjusting the trajectory of each particle its own best particle and toward the best particle of the entire swarm at each generation. The PSO algorithm becomes very popular due to it can be easily implemented and quickly find a good solution. Then the PSO algorithm can be used to adjust parameters of PID to control wheel velocities in an unknown environment filled with obstacles. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, simulation results and experiments are included for illustration.

Suspended Si/air high contrast subwavelength gratings for long-wavelength infrared reflectors

We report broadband reflectance in the long-wavelength infrared (LWIR, 8-12 μm) utilizing suspended-Si, high-index-contrast subwavelength gratings (HCGs). Iterative design optimization using finite element analysis software has been performed accounting for silicon's wavelength-dependent index of refraction and extinction coefficient. Grating arrays were fabricated using commercial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates, photolithography and reactive ion etching; subsequent selective wet etching of SiO2was used to provide suspended Si/air gratings. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy demonstrates broadband, polarization-dependent reflectance between 8.5 and 12 μm, which agrees with the simulated response. © 2013 SPIE.

Large-scale synthesis and photoluminescence of cobalt tungstate nanowires

Single-crystalline wolframite-type monoclinic structure cobalt tungstate (CoWO4) nanowires were obtained by a solvothermal method at 180 °C for 24 h with a width of 20 nm and length of 200 to 400 nm. Besides the strong blue-green light emission at 10–250 K, we found much stronger and broader near-infrared emission ranging from 700–1000 nm at about 300 K under the excitation wavelength of 325 nm. The emission and the dependence of emission intensity on temperature are discussed by introducing the effect of Co vacancies. This near-infrared emission material might have potential applications in infrared detection or stealth technology.

In a multipartite setting, it is possible to distinguish quantum states that are genuinely n-way entangled from those that are separable with respect to some bipartition. Similarly, the nonlocal correlations that can arise from measurements on entangled states can be classified into those that are genuinely n-way nonlocal, and those that are local with respect to some bipartition. Svetlichny introduced an inequality intended as a test for genuine tripartite nonlocality. This work introduces two alternative definitions of n-way nonlocality, which we argue are better motivated both from the point of view of the study of nature, and from the point of view of quantum information theory. We show that these definitions are strictly weaker than Svetlichny's, and introduce a series of suitable Bell-type inequalities for the detection of three-way nonlocality. Numerical evidence suggests that all three-way entangled pure quantum states can produce three-way nonlocal correlations.

In this paper, the metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) Schottky AlN photodetectors (PDs) on Si substrates show a dark current as low as ~1 nA at a bias up to 200 V. Excellent thermal stability and radiation hardness of solar-blind AlN MSM PDs are achieved. The working temperature is up to 300 °C and the radiation tolerance is up to 10 13 cm -2 of 2 MeV proton fluences for AlN MSM PDs. The results demonstrate the high promise of AlN as an active material for solar-blind DUV photodetection in extremely harsh environments.

We experimentally demonstrate optomechanical motion and force measurements near the quantum precision limits set by the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds. Optical beams in coherent and phase-squeezed states are used to measure the motion of a mirror under an external stochastic force. Utilizing optical phase tracking and quantum smoothing techniques, we achieve position, momentum, and force estimation accuracies close to the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds with the coherent state, while the estimation using squeezed states shows clear quantum enhancements beyond the coherent-state bounds.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are increasingly being used for general purpose parallel computing. They provide significant performance gains over multi-core CPU systems, and are an easily accessible alternative to supercomputers. The architecture of general purpose GPU systems(GPGPU), however, poses challenges in efficiently transferring data among the host and device(s). Although commodity many core devices such as NVIDIA GPUs provide more than one way to move data around, it is unclear which method is most effective given a particular application. This presents difficulty in supporting latency-sensitive cyber-physical systems (CPS). In this work we present a new approach to data transfer in a heterogeneous computing system that allows direct communication between GPUs and other I/O devices. In addition to adding this functionality our system also improves communication between the GPU and host. We analyze the current vendor provided data communication mechanisms and identify which methods work best for particular tasks with respect to throughput, and total time to completion. Our method allows a new class of real-time cyber-physical applications to be implemented on a GPGPU system. The results of the experiments presented here show that GPU tasks can be completed in 34 percent less time than current methods. Furthermore, effective data throughput is at least as good as the current best performers. This work is part of concurrent development of Gdev, an open-source project to provide Linux operating system support of many-core device resource management. © 2012 IEEE.

We describe how the couplings in an asynchronous kinetic Ising model can be inferred. We consider two cases: one in which we know both the spin history and the update times and one in which we know only the spin history. For the first case, we show that one can average over all possible choices of update times to obtain a learning rule that depends only on spin correlations and can also be derived from the equations of motion for the correlations. For the second case, the same rule can be derived within a further decoupling approximation. We study all methods numerically for fully asymmetric Sherrington-Kirkpatrick models, varying the data length, system size, temperature, and external field. Good convergence is observed in accordance with the theoretical expectations.

As a rule, the usage of algorithms of image restoration leads to the substantial smoothing of edges. In the case when images are restored either by global methods based on minimization of two-dimensional variations or by local adaptive methods, information on the contour component of images is preserved. In this work, the results of numerical modeling based on global and local algorithms of image restoration are presented and analyzed. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
